  2. Beelzebubble, I feel totally betrayed by my body and I don't have all the ailments you do. This sucks! I feel like having celiac disease has ruined the plans I had for my life and, consequently, my husband's. I was diagnosed in November 2003 and I actually have gotten sicker now that I am gluten-free. I have been off work for a couple of months. I know when I go back, I won't be half the person they hired. I was always the one with all the energy - people would mock me I was so energetic. I don't want to go back - I can't understand why this has happened to me, how can I expect them to understand? People have already asked me, "it's just a food intolerance, right?". Well, yes, but I feel like crap. I feel as though I am a shell of the person I was. I don't think that I can do this for the rest of my life. Why can't they figure this out? They have Viagra for men, and they can't solve a problem with something so basic to life as digestion?!@# If it helps at all, there is reasearch going on. They haven't updated their website yet, but the Celiac Sprue Research Foundataion has clinical trials of a gluten breaking enzyme in progress now. They expect preliminary results in the first part of April. Chaitan Khosla, a BioChemist and the person who started the foundataion, has a wife and son with celiac disease. A large part of his mission is to develop a celiac pill, he estimates it will take 5-8 years. This page describes the researc they are doing I hope you feel better!
  3. I too have hypothyroidism and celiac disease. Interestingly, the hypothyroidism was diagnosed in 1995 and I have been taking replacement thyroid ever since. 137mcg daily. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in November 2003, after 2 months of GI symptoms. I wasn't getting better and they finally checked my thyroid again. I had way too much! It came as a surprise to me that too much thyroid can be as problematic as too little. They reduced my dosage to 75mcg daily and I am finally starting to feel better. The Drs think that either my body is absorbing the thyroid replacement more effectively or that my immune system is functioning better and somehow that has allowed my thyroid gland to begin functioning better. There are three blood tests you can request to check your thyroid, TSH, this checks the level of thyroid stimulating hormone in your blood, T3 and T4, these check the levels of thyroid in your blood. TSH is probably the most sensitive, if it is high your your body wants more thyroid than you have. I always get the numbers from my doctor, just being in the normal range isn't enough for me. I want to be in the middle of the normal range. In any case, thyroid can be very tricky. I hope you get this worked out.
  4. I too have double vision and it feels like a lot of work to keep my eyes focused. All of these vision problems leave me feeling dizzy most of the time. I haven't seen or heard it mentioned as a symptom of celiac, but I understand how you feel. Take care.

  6. Celiacfreeman, I am going to Las Vegas at the end of the month. My husband and I are staying at The Excalibur. I emailed their dining department at, the response was a little slow 3 or 4 days, but the chef from Sir Galahad's (one of Excaliburs restaurants) said of course they could accomodate a gluten-free diet. He gave me his number and said I could call him or page the chef on duty when I arrive. I'll let you know how it goes after my trip. Good luck!
  7. I was diagnosed with Celiac November 2003 and have been gluten-free ever since. My husband and I love to travel to other countries. Not that I feel up to travelling yet, but I hope I will eventually. Does anyone have any advice (hopefully success stories) about traveling? We are especially interested in going to Europe and North Africa. Thanks! Carolyn
  8. In response to AntiGluten going on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), I applaud you! This diet is even more difficult than a gluten free diet, but I have read nothing but great things about it. I would really like to know if it helps you. One of the books that Elaine Gottshall references in Breaking the Vicious Cycle, is Management of Celiac Disease by Drs. Sydney and Merrill Haas. It's an old, but very interesting book; it was published by two doctors a father and son in the 1950's. They had remarkable success with the SCD. This book is out of print and difficult to find, but worth it.
