Banning Gluten Fromthe House!?

So I have known I have DH for about 10 months now. What a relief to know what is going on....however changing my life around while still taking care of my family has been a challenge. I have lots of great gluten free recipies that I use. For several months last fall I just said no gluten in the house at all because my rash was so severe and I felt so sick I needed to be sure I was not contaminated. All it takes is a grain for me to feel the effects. When gluten was out of the house I healed up and felt better. Since Chirstmas there has been regular bread and tortillas in the house. It seems that no matter how careful everyone is with clean up and trying to prevent cross contamination, my rash is back in full force and I feel miserable. So I relly need to ban the gluten once again but I feel bad that as everyone likes their white bread and tortillas etc. I feel like i should be able to find a way top make it work. Any one else ban gluten in their home because they were so sensitive that it was necessary for them to stay healthy.

Any insight or support is appreciated

I am 48 and never had arash like this before. 2nd appointment tomorrow with a dermatologist. Last ointment prescribed didn't help. Should I insist on biopsy/test for sh? Can dh show up at my old age. Been eating gluten my whole life without a problem. I'll try to start eating gluten free. Anything for some relief. Thanks all for you help.

Full Recovery, What Worked For Me.

Hey Guys I just joined but feel that it's my duty to divulge the wisdom I have acquired through nothing but falling on my face repeatedly while trying to recover from Celiac over the last 3 years. My grammar is garbage so bare with me lol. lets start with my symptoms from as early as I can remember tell i hit the break point.

In the eighth grade I would get wicked cramps in my lower stomach that would force me to bend over in pain and eventually end up on the toilet an hour or so later. In the military I would get strong stomach cramps in my upper stomach and then chug milk to make it go away. Months before I got out of the Air Force I got a strong bout of vertigo, one minute I would be watching TV the next second the whole room would start to spin tell I vomited. That was from chocolate (DARK) I later found but it is connected to Celiac I will explain later. After The Air Force Months or so I would drink cocoa before my work outs (cocoa raises your nitrogen levels and helps to dilate your blood vessels, helps you get a better pump and better recovery) I read that right before I got out of the Air Force, connection yep. Hour or so after each work out I would get a strong sense of deja vu then the vertigo then nausea. about 2 years later came the beginning of the breaking point.
My Muscles started to lock up, Muscle knots all over my body, in my biceps, triceps, shoulders, neck, feet, hands, face everywhere. Then my energy levels started to plummet big time. about 4 months after i started to develop a cough and drainage from my tonsils adenoids at night it would drown me I would have to wake up and cough it up and it got worse and worse. one night it got real bad I got up went to the bathroom and drank some water looked down and saw a red line going down the side of my leg! I googled it and it was sepses(blood poisoning) life threatening stuff. I thought well its 2 in the morning ill go to the hospital when I wake up. buy the time I woke up it was 90% gone so i thought well ill give it another day,(I didn't say I was smart, wisdom comes from being dumb lol) It went away and I noticed red patches popping up on my hand shoulder and aahhhmmm crotch. I put 2 and 2 together and figured well that's auto immune, it wasn't there before and the symptoms come and go so it must be something im eating.
I tried everything I could think of cutting out nothing worked, one day i had nothing to eat and hadn't been coughing for a day or two and had a big glass of milk then the drainage started and the coughing, "found it" I thought. (progressive stages of Celiac your body starts to reject lactose in milk) The coughing and the drainage went away but the muscle knots and fatigue stayed, it didn't make sense yet so I kept taking things out tell one day I thought lest try this gluten free thing.
Within two week my energy started to rise after 4 or 5 months i figured out everything that had gluten in it and cut it out. Things got a lot better for me but although the muscle knots where not as bad they where still there. Come to find out the main thing your body uses to recover from damage especially intestinal damage is glutimine the amino acid. The largest stores of glutimine in your body is stored in your muscles. My body was pulling glutamine from my muscle to recover my intestines and leaving my muscles high and dry with nothing to help them recover with so they would shut down and knot up.
Time and a gluten free diet helped but because my intestines were so damaged they had a hard time soaking up enough nutrients to help my body recover. What I finally found was I needed the most nutritious calorie and vitamin rich food I could get and lots of it, I also need lots of amino acids for my body to use for recovery. Long story short its the paleo diet and force feeding my self even when my appetite was low that finally turned the corner for me. Chicken breast, Beef, eggs, pork, sweet potato's, potato's, Brussels sprouts(covered in olive oil baked for 30 min on 400 and dipped in home made honey mustard)green beans corn and all the fruit I could jam down my throat. That's what did it for me all my symptoms are gone even the knots. Im back in the gym and full of energy. Oh Hemp milk has 20 amino acids in it good protein and the chocolate is delish!
I dont want to go on forever so if there's something you have questions about ill pop in once a day to check on the thread.

P.S.
DEATH TO GLUTEN!!!

To Be Or Not To Be

For years maybe 10 I have suffered from hard red painful lumps that flared up in my hands (particularly all the way up my fingers) I've gone back and forth to my doctor who has been understanding but tested me for a range of auto immune disorders. At first ge thought Lupus, yet test after test came back negative. I then suffered in silence not thinking I would ever find out why these flare up occurred. I've search uni data bases, pictures and finally found a picture of a member with very similar hands to mine. I had lumps in identical areas only mine never reach the blistering stage. They can take a week ie more to go away but always return without warning.

I get red lumps/nodules that flare up from under the skin and can cause me so much pain I cannot turn a key. They become itchy but funny enough, never blister as described. This week has been the worst in 10 years. They are all over my hands and gave areas to my elbows. They look like warts only red or insect bites, however they are not.
The tissue is very inflamed a sore. All the rashes I find are Very typical "rashes" not red inflamed lumps or nodules like I get all over my hands abd now elbows. this is what has been so off putting and why I virtually gave up.

I've always suspected I may be intolerant to gluten having cramping, boosting, flatulence and very irregular bowel motions which I was told was IBS. My hair thinned 8 years ago and the more I read the more I suspect this could ve something of a bigger picture. Having the lumps biopsied on Wednesday off my elbow so fingers crossed I get some kind of answer.

Help!

I am new to this..
My boyfriend was recently diagnosed with Dematitis Herpetiformis, and now he can't eat anything with Gluten in it..

Which is a HUGE change for us, we used to eat out all the time, never caring what toxins we put into our bodies.. But his body paid the price.
He thought he just had eczema, really bad eczema.. He'd break out in red blisters on his elbows/hands/knees/head at odd times of the year, itching and scratching terribly. Having tried all creams/medicines and been on Prednisone off and on many times to try to get the itch to stop and heal. I'd catch him scratching his body on the countertops, and I sponged his body with apple cider vinegar with mother, we tried so many home rememdies and nothing worked. Finally after the 3rd biopsy, they found it was this.

So no more gluten..although I don't have to do it with him, I am..because my body deserves better than I give it anyways.
And it makes it easier on him if I do it with him.

So I need to know what has gluten, I've been doing research but things are so spotty, some things say mayo has it, some say it doesn't. Some say CERTAIN brands are gluten-free.. but I just don't know.

I want to make a meal menu, and go shopping for purely things that are gluten-free, we have a gluten-free store but everything is SOOOO overpriced its ridiculous.

Can you guys give me a list of things that are gluten-free, I know fruits and veggies, but what about beans? Mayo? mustard? Nalley Chili? any gluten-free chilis??

I need some homemade recipe ideas too.. I want to start making good Gluten free dinners.

Also, ANY tips about coping with this disease would be great, he is having a hard time adjusting and just finished another round of Prednisone and now is taking Dapsone, which seems to be helping..
But sometimes he just gets so stressed out when he is itchy and can't sleep because of it.. I think he is getting depressed. Any help would be amazing!

Thank you!

6+ Weeks Gluten-Free And A Dh Update . . .

Hey All,

6+ weeks on a tight veg & rice diet, and fruit with a wee bit of beef, chicken, and shrimp, and BAM !!! Healing . . Vanicream is outstanding for dryness and is a blessing for me. I'm also good with dairy, ie cheese, eggs, mayonnaise, etc . . . No "raw open wounds", dry skin sloughing, yes, but, healing. Gluten-free Bisquik is working too.

Finally relief from the rawness, weeping, uncontrollable urge to rip one's flesh in search of relief . . .

I'm lucky, and the over-the-counter 1% hydro-cortisone is working good. There is hope, but we must observe and pay attention.

Comfort, healing, and health to you all . . .

Peace,

Other Food Sensitivities

To those of you who flare up with things other than gluten..... how did you come to learn what they were? was it through elimination? or did you have some sort of test performed by an allergist? The reason I ask is because I have an appointment with an allergist on Friday, and if any of you had luck with a method that is commonly used in that field, I'd like to ask for the same test. I feel that my case is severe (in that I wake up with bloody sheets daily and I have at least a few hundred individual sores). I am in the process of transforming my home into a completely gluten-free home. I bought all new cookware and now have my dog on a gluten-free diet. My girlfriend is also gluten-free.

I am not responding to a gluten-free diet.
I tried Dapsone, Prednisone, and am now on Sulfapyridine.
I have not had any luck with any of these medications.
I cannot sleep for more than a few hours at a time because I wake up scratching. I take benedryll to sleep but it only helps a little. I have been living like this for a few years (since I first developed the rash) and it's exhausting, as I'm sure you all know.
I have checked all my meds, shampoo's, ect.
I also did an 18 day juice fast last summer which did not help.
Any suggestions? Anything I could ask my allergist for?
I am also established with a Dermatologist and see him regularly, but Friday will be my 1st time with an allergist.
I am aware it can take up to a few years on a gluten-free diet but it seems like I would have seen even just a little improvement with the meds and a gluten-free diet by now.

Clothes Wash

I have been trying to clear my DH for many many months with some success Gluten Free. Now that I have been strictly G-Free for so long, and reading so many recent posts on this forum I am at an end.. except I wonder if there is something in our clothes wash?

The only other (harder to determine) options I have left are water supply and any indirect ie not undigested and rarely on skin.

Does anyone have any other ideas?? Anything??
There are so many clothes wash detergents that are hard to determine the original source of the chemical/additive that I am hoping for some others input. Many many months of food additive research seems to have help me but there is still a lagging problem (what I'd describe as the 'itchy, rashy but not like a tradional/medical rash'.

Perhaps someone can give us some insight to an alternative to commercial products that has had an obvious and positive effect to help?

I just want to get confirmation. This is what my dermatologist STRONGLY believes is DH although all biopsies have been inconclusive. It flares when I eat gluten, becomes itchy, but hasn't disappeared in 4-5 years of being gluten free.

This morning I woke up feeling like I got hit by a mack truck, some really, really bad pain. Later on, this rash started itching. I think I got glutened.

Is It Dh?

First, a little bit of backstory. I am a self-diagnosed gluten intolerant. My nurse practitioner did not see the point in testing for Celiac if I was planning on doing a gluten challenge anyway, so when I did it, it was obvious that the gluten was causing a problem. I have been off of gluten for a little over a year, with some oopsies along the way. I have accidentally been eating tiny bits of gluten for a while, but discovered the source last week. I had been having very mild digestive problems and when I accidentally glutened myself a few weeks ago, I did not have the usual large reaction that I usually have, but I had a lot of abdominal pains that came and went. Anyway, it ended up being my cereal. I eat generic rice chex and the company must have changed suppliers....it took a while to figure it out. I thought it was stress as I felt great after going home for the holidays, but I have found that I felt better because I was not eating the cereal. Since I have discovered that, my digestive system has slowly gotten better, but my face, neck and body are still a little puffy due to inflammation.

Anyway, last week, I got a red mark on my wrist that looked like a red-colored bruise. Since then, it has started to get tiny bumps like a rash, has continued to be red, and at times, it has looked kind of like really dry skin. Today it has started ITCHING, though I put a little bit of hydrocortizone on it and it feels a bit better. I have never gotten any blisters and the tiny bumps are not white, they are red, no drainage or anything. Both areas are close to each other and about the size of a black bean. It does not look like the normal red, dry patches I get and since it has been around for a few days, it is definitely not contact dermatitis. Any ideas? Is it DH?

Red Rash Ugh!

I was waiting for my hand to heal from my last glutening and so I stopped eating eggs, thinking reducing my iodine intake might help!

Well my hand is healed...so I added back in eggs yesterday morning. I also switched back to my other shampoo since my scalp seems less burny feeling also. Thinking maybe my skin had calmed down.

Well now I have broken out from my chin down to the bottom of my neck in these small 'pimple' red looking bumps. They don't look like they are filled with fluid, like my hand 'looked'. They are very itchy/burning feeling, much like my hand, but they look different. From pictures I am not sure this is DH, especially since its on the front of my neck. So I don't think that I was glutened unknowingly.

Has anyone reacted seperately from eggs?

This is a fairly embarrasing looking rash. =( Its pretty noticeable. Ugh.

Since the summer of 2011 (before I was diagnosed) I have had a rash on my waist line off on. It will come and go. I just recently noticed that it was back about a week ago. In fairness I hadnt been following a gluten free diet all winter break. I was recently diagnosed and am still getting used to not having gluten. The descriptions of DH sound similar to mine except there is never any puss or busting. Just small pimple sized rashes that itch. Usually only 2 or 3 in a cluster at a time. I haven't had gluten in about a week and I'm wondering if DH comes and goes like this? Or when I'm not eating gluten is it just not aggitated. Any info on DH would be great as I know hardly anything about the disorder. Wanting to make sure I shouldn't see my doctor if this is maybe something else and more serious.
