Eating Before Bed

Has anyone found they can lose weight faster by not eating anything after supper and especially before bed? I have read that its total calories over the day, not when you eat them, that leads to weight loss. However, in my case I have a very slow metabolism, and I think it could be related to gluten. Its tough for me NOT to snack before bed as I work evenings and come home around midnight. But, on the few occasions I didnt snack, I woke up feeling thinner, and by belly was a bit flatter.

Slow Metabolism

I always thought my inability to lose weight was a slow metabolism, although my doctor said my thyroid was fine. Being gluten free for a month I am starting to lose a bit. Anybody else have this issue and does gluten affect the thyroid/metabolism?

I Am Wasting Away - Please Help! :(

On the advice of my doctor, I went gluten-free about 3 months ago - more stringently so 2 months ago - and started to feel so much better. It would be an essay to write my medical history so I will skip that for now. But I was starting to see some real results for the first time in a decade, being gluten-free.

Problem is, I keep losing weight. I am little to begin with at 5'2 but as of 2 weeks ago my weight was down to 97 lbs, the thinnest I have been since about age 14! It was just getting scary, so I decided I had to do whatever it took to gain weight. I switched from my gluten-free cereal and started making home-made granola, and made almond butter rice crispie treats with the same cereal for snacks, and started eating these things constantly. My weight began to come up (I gained 5 lbs in 3 days!) but I also started feeling REALLY REALLY BAD.

I cannot tolerate any sugar other than the sort that diabetics would use and discovered that I do not react well at all to what I was using as a sweetener (brown rice syrup). I know that the syrup is one reason for my feeling lousy but I am now worried, what if I can't tolerate oats (I've had problems with granola in the past and have read that many of us can't eat oats. I did use gluten-free ones.) and therefore I don't want to make a new batch of granola and perhaps make this horrible feeling last any longer. I also discovered that the gluten-free rice cereal that I've been eating is sweetened with brown rice syrup too! So I can't make my rice krispie treats and have nothing "safe" for breakfast.

My weight is going down again and I am hungry and miserable and feeling physically terrible. I don't know what to eat to fatten myself up. I have heard that many processed gluten-free foods come with CC issues...I just want to feel better. Can anyone help me. I feel like crying right now as I write this.

Other info: Can't have dairy, corn, eggs, sugar (though I can have fructose...) My lunch and dinners I eat as much as I can of veggies and lean meat or chicken, and brown rice. Breakfasts I have no idea what to do now. And I need fattening snacks as I am really hungry in between meals, clearly a sign my body needs more food.

One thing I would like to add is nuts, but do those need to be certified gluten-free? I am so overwhelmed right now and all I want to do is eat some things that won't result in my feeling terrible.

gluten-free Vegetarian, Menopause & Weight Gain

Hi there -

I'm Judy, and new to this forum. I'm wondering if folks here can give my any leads about my body's stubborn refusal to loose weight.

I've been gluten free over 1 1/2 years now. I tested positive for anti-gliadin antibodies, and began to feel tremendously better within a couple of weeks of going off gluten. I've not had any other testing for celiac, so I can't say for sure I have it, but I know from my diet change that I've hit what's been bothering me. One bit of gluten...and I get horrendous bloating, joint pain, fatigue, and diarrhea. I had been treated for giardia about a year before going off gluten, and knew from that experience that I could not longer tolerate any milk - I get diarrhea, bloating & cramps within an hour of ingestion (I later tested positive for milk allergy). The only animal products I consume are eggs.

I was lean, fit, and athletic before I got giardia, and after recovery from that (I lost 14 pounds from that) I started gaining weight. By the time I was told I had "gluten sensistive enteropathy" (my doc's term) a year later, I had re-gained the 14 pounds and put on another 10. I tested below threshold twice for thyroid problems (I had excessively long menstrual periods before I went into menopause). My naturopath did other testing and treatment, and now my b12 levels, D3, and bacterial flora in my gut are all fine. I take multivitamins with iron, b12, calcium daily, and probiotics periodically.

So, if I don't do dairy, meat, and am gluten-free, eating very little processed gluten-free food (I bake), and have continued my excercise program (weight training 2x/week, 1-2 harder cardio workouts/wk, 1-2 long walks (3-5 miles) per week....why haven't I lost any weight? I eat about 2000 calories per day. I'm 172 pounds at 5'6", and am 51 years old. My clothes fit better now, but I still can't get into my pre-giardia pants. I would have thought my gut has healed by now, and that my metabolism would have recovered.

I'm grateful to know there's a community out there. It's lonely at times, when I'm surrounded by all this gluten (and meat & dairy).

In peace,

Glutenized By Something Non Gluten

I'm 5 weeks into the gluten free diet but now I'm not 100% sure it's gluten that is the problem or at least the only problem. My symptoms were just neurological in nature. All neuro tests were negative so I tried gluten free simply to get healthy ... only to find out gluten might be the actual culprit. Prior to the diet, my stomach was generally ok although dairy did bloat me. NOW that I'm on the gluten free diet I get bloated at least a couple times per week. Just a tiny mistake with wheat and my stomach is super bloated, I have stomach pains as well as numbness/tingling. So I think the gluten is at least part of the problem.

Question... on a couple occasions I have been fairly positive I have NOT had gluten. In fact I had a restaurant serve me a gluten free meal ordered directly from the chef. So perhaps I have other sensitivities. But if I ate something else (suspects are, onions, garlic, msg or soy), would these items cause more neurological symptoms? Or will it only be gluten that causes the neurological symptoms? And why is it that I'm only super sensitive now to these other foods that never caused me any stomach problems before?

And how do I narrow down what my other sensitivities might be? It's so frustrating because the bloating lasts a few days. After 1 bad meal, then every meal leads to real bloating for about 3 days. So it's challenging to figure out what other foods are the problem.

Thanks! I really appreciate getting knowledge directly from the people who have experienced this.

Weight Loss Buddies

Ok, here is the rapid start plan from dr. Phil. There will have to be some modifications to it to take out the things that bother us.

How about every Monday we weigh in. I'm going to do it today and then again on Monday. I like to use my waist measurement, my hips, my bust, and each thigh. I remember last time some weeks ibwould loose inches and not weight.

Exercise goal is something intentional every day. Intentional means you made time to do it. A walk, some weights, something.

Do we want to post what we are eating as well?

Weight Loss Healthy?

Ok, so I have been trying to figure out this weight thing ever since self Dxing myself as a Celiac without freaking out.

I started my Gluten Free diet back in July after a couple of weeks of being really sick. I have had most of my symptoms get better with the exception of what I believe to be a lack of stomach acid. I have been fighting the big C for a couple of weeks now and trying to get that under control.

Back to the weight issue. I started out at about 275, im about 6'3" so I was overweight. I had high blood pressure and although I have diabetes in my family, I didnt have any blood glucose problems. I started losing weight fast, I know some of it was to the Gluten and some of it was that I just wasnt eating with fear that I would get sick.

Jump to now.....I checked my weight this morning and I am at 243. Thats over 30 pounds in 3 months!!!! I no longer fit into my clothes and I went from a 40 waist to a 36. Not to mention my legs are getting skinny and I just feel thinner. For the most part I feel good, I did have some issues with malnutrition which I think came from the gastro problems I have had. I feel somewhat weak but I havent been able to hit the gym or anything like that either because I havent had much energy. My head issues are just clearing up.

I have read through many threads and have seen a lot of weight loss posts but I guess im just freaking out a bit. I had my brother in law just pass from bowel cancer and I cant help to think that there is something else wrong with me. Im trying to eat more so I dont lose so fast but I think im setting myself back by doing so. I try to stay positive and enjoy the loss and the fact that my blood pressure is no longer high. It just doesnt feel healthy though.....

Gluten-Free, Vegetarian, Weight Gain?

About a year ago I was diagnosed with Celiac's. I was and still am a vegetarian. I can't even think about eating meat! Since going gluten-free I have gained 47lbs!!!!! I excercise 3-5 times a week (45-60 min. each). I steer away from gluten-free breads, rice, and most desserts. I eat 600-1000 calories a day which I list in a food journal. (If I eat more, I gain) I have seen a dietitian, who had no idea why I was gaining weight and suggestested eating more protein and more calories, which resulted in 17 lbs in 3 weeks added to the initial 30 I gained in the first 3 months of going gluten-free. I have been to the local Physicians weightloss center, which can't help me because I am a vegeterian. No matter what I do I can''t get the weight off! I am desperate...
Any suggestions?

Nutrition, Eat Enough, High Proten - Healthy?

So I've been gluten-free for almost a whole year & can't begin to describe the relief (tho I'm sure you all know!).
So, things are good...

I do have a concern, though, as I've noticed (I keep a food journal) that my diet consists mostly of protein then fats & veggies/fruits.
I don't follow any particular "diet" but my diet is looking more & more paleo (but I still eat beans & other things they dont, I've discovered thru research).
Nothing against the diet, as I know very little about it, but I do wonder about having such a high protein diet & if there really are health concerns related to that.

I eat protein w/every meal, next to no processed foods (unless you count string cheese or yogurt as processed). The "gluten-free" processed foods i stay away from, except for the few times a year gluten-free bread mix. But, I do eat plenty of veg/fruits... though I ought to increase my grains (I'll eat oats, rice & corn - not much else as i don't have a preference for them).

Another smaller issue I have is inability to eat _enough_ calories in a day. I eat so much protein or fiber-filled foods (veg/fruit) I'm not really hungry - but my food log is showing I'm getting like 1200 cal's a day. Advice?

Anything you all can share/enlighten would be much appreciated... Thanks for reading. =)

Protein Drinks?

I need more protein in my diet as I'm depressed & tired all the time. (this goes mostly away if I've had a lot of meat) Besides general health I want to start working out as well so I'm going to need more protein for that. Are there some good powdered protein drinks (or whatever you call them) that are g-free, you can mix into other drinks or just eat by itself & not ridiculously expensive? I'm a bit lost of what exactly I need to look for so any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
