Can't Get Enough Air?

I'm gluten intolerant but I'm not completely g-free as I'm still trying to get a grip on things & change my diet. I've been experiencing for about three months now of feeling like I can't get enough air. I breathe in as deep as I can through my nose & my mouth and yet I still feel like I'm not getting enough air. I want to start jogging and I tried to a couple of weeks ago, and I started out slow but even then, I had to stop because I was near the point of gasping for air and it was really freaking me out. So I'm wondering, can gluten cause this? I know that excessive weight can cause some problems (which is why I'm trying to get into running) but like this?? I don't have a doctor or insurance to see one so I'm looking online for help til I can.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Exercise Improvements After Going Gluten Free?

Hi
I have been working out regularly for the past ten years (52 year old male). Other than better cardio, and a slightly firmer body, you would never know I exercise as miuch as I do. I wonder if glutemn intolerance in some way impedes any gains? Just recently I am able to jog every day, when before I needed at least two days to 'recover'. Thanks for your thoughts!

Pain Afterwards

Hi all,

So I've had quite an intense couple of years in terms of destroying myself physically. I was a year-round swimmer, practicing 5 days a week for an hour and a half each day, and I injured my shoulder. Nine months of physical therapy concurrent with training, and no progress. So I quite swimming, and the shoulder problems only got worse. My shoulder popped almost constantly, and hurt all the time. This fall, I underwent surgery on that shoulder and was diagnosed with chronic subluxation (basically my shoulder popped in and out of socket dozens of times a day). Now I'm in physical therapy and having both shoulders treated because the other one pops constantly, much as the other did. My right shoulder's now doing the popping thing again so I have no clue what's going on there.

Long story short, I'm obviously not getting much exercise because everything hurts my shoulders. The other day, my mom brought me to the arthritis water aerobics class at the YMCA, which she said has really helped her arthritis (basically, everyone in my family has or has had arthritis. Grandmother had ankylosing spondylitis, Mom's got osteoarthritis, Dad has gout, Aunt has really bad arthritis in her knee). So I went and was being really careful of my shoulders, etc. After class, my hips started to hurt, and by the end of the day, I was having problems walking. This was yesterday, and now, even sitting here, I'm in pain. it actually feels better when I walk, but I can't walk fast and I can't spread my legs to stretch them.

I'm out of shape, to some extent, but I'm not that far out of shape. My mom is more out of shape than me, and she had absolutely no pain. I'm also only just turned 18. I haven't been glutened recently (last time was a few weeks ago though) and I don't think it's that, so I'm wondering if it's some added side effect of being gluten intolerant, or if it could be something else.

Feeling As Though I'm Glutened When I Exercise

Hi all! So I finally got the courage up to exercise again after a long time of not because of pain. I haven't exercised like I should in a long time because it took me five years to be diagnosed and I'm now a year and two months into recovery. However, I tried to start exercising again a few weeks ago and my first week I did 4 times of fast, but not power walking for 20 minutes. The second week I went up to power walking, but had to stop after three times (I did every other day) because of the terrible pain I was in. Now I played basketball in school so I'm familiar with all the stretching and normal "over doing it" pain. I did stretch, I drank extra water, all of that, but I had terrible pain that felt like I was being glutened. All my symptoms I have when I am glutened came back...terrible intestinal pain, fatigue, join pain, brain fog--however I did not change introduce any other new foods so I know I'm not glutened. The worst part is The pain is still lingering now two weeks later just as strong as it was right after I exercised.

Anyone have any ideas or solutions to help my pain? I'd really like to get back to exercising because six years and counting is too long not to exercise!

Thanks!!

Emily Harrison Marathoner On Tv 1/14

Just read today about Emily Harrison, a former University of Virginia running star who was sixth in the nation in cross country in 2007-08. In 2009 and 2010 she was often unable to train because of sciatic nerve and shin problems and tissue inflammation, troubles that were eventually traced back to a "gluten intolerance," according to the article. She also avoids dairy.

Today, she will run in the Olympic marathon trials in Houston, which (where I live) will be on NBC at 3 p.m. Realistically, she probably won't make the Olympics, but she has the 13th best time out of 200 women after running just two marathons.

Go Emily!!

Help With Nutrition And Supplements When Beginning Work Outs

Hey everyone.

I'm still a newbie to gluten free (2 months) although I've known for a few years that I have trouble with processed food. I'm a dancer but had to stop due to a complete inability to function from the gluten. I have been sick since September 2010 and was diagnosed in October 2011. After a hell of a lot of my own research and working with a very knowledgeable specialist, in the last 2 months my body has started the healing process, although it's going to be a long one from the looks of it.

I am currently 22 year old female, 5'0ft and 68 lbs currently. At my worst I was 61 lbs. Due to this, I really have no muscle left, certainly not enough to go back to dance yet. I have cleaned up my diet and don't eat anything outside of meat, vegetables, fruits and nuts at the moment. I am also intolerant to many things at the moment, some temporary, others permanent.

I need to know how to start adding muscle onto my frame so that I can go back to dance without pushing so much that it will harm the healing process. I don't really know what I should be doing in terms of nutrition and supplements in order to make that happen. At the moment I can't even jog down my street, that's how weak I am.

I really need an outline from some more experienced members as to what I should be doing to remedy this situation. What supplements should I be using? Is protein powder, creatine etc the way to go? What do I need to add or change in my diet to help with this process. Is weights something I should be considering or is walking enough for now? Pretty much any help I can get when it comes to this will be appreciated.

Marathon Training

Hi All,
I am new to the forum, and have been a Celiac for the past 4 years, with recently being diagnosed with having corn and yeast allergies and lactose intolerance. My mother was also diagnosed with the Celiac Disease 40 years ago, so it was easy for me to diagnose when I saw the symptoms.

I cycle every morning for about 40 minutes and run for 3-4 miles each day. I am looking to commence training to hopefully run the New York Marathon next November. So I wondered if anyone on the forum has completed a marathon, and if so are there any Celiac energy foods or drinks you would recommend to boost energy. Currently without running or cycling long periods, on the weekends I am totally wiped. I take a vegetarian multi-vitamin which really helps with my energy level, but realize with longer runs I may be so tired it may impact my training. With so many allergies, thankfully I am big into fruit, veg etc, so I indulge with these on a daily basis.

Anyhow, any feedback from folks having gone down this road would be appreciated.

thanks,

Building Momentum

Okay,
it might just be me and my crazy drive to "conquer" or "accomplish" but every now and then I get this desire to go do something different with my life that I would really have to work hard in order to accomplish that goal. Like today I started looking up a job like fire fighting. Something where I'd get to rescue other people and do good even if it was chalk full of sad times. The adrenaline rush of forging forward is sometimes what gets me seeking out difficult things to accomplish.
lol
For all I know this could be something related to what my Grandpa had, post traumatic stress disorder or just a mental memory of fighting cancer and celiac disease and stuff in life has permanently imprinted a desire to strive in my mind.
"Wooot!" It's like a wave of euphoria or endorphins?? But awe man I wanna kick some butt!

Gluten, Dairy And Soy Free Protein Shakes?

Oh great gurus of the Celiac board, I have yet to find a pre-mixed, bottled shake that is gluten, dairy AND soy free. If I relax my dairy and/or soy restrictions (I keep fairly loose restrictions now though I should be tighter) I can find one or two, but not if I want it free of all three. Any suggestions??? I know you guys must have something for me.

Weak And Fatigued

Hi all,

Prior to my coeliac diagnosis I ran (usually 10km, up to 25km on weekends) or worked out at the gym almost everyday.

Since going gluten free my diet hasn't changed all that much. The biggest change has been bread - I used to eat 6 pieces a day, now I eat 2 pieces of gluten-free bread every second day.

Since that minor change to my diet, I've struggled through my workouts. I feel so weak and fatigued after 15 minutes or so. It's very frustrating, as I used to run for up to 2.5hrs at a time.

Is it possible that eliminating gluten (even though I never ate a lot of it - mostly just the bread) could cause this?

Sciatic Nerve Pain

Last week, I bought a "gluten-free" chicken sausage out of a full service meatcase. The next day, I was glutened beyond belief! Low and behold, I dug through the garbage and found the parchment paper wrapper... and there were bread crumbs in it. Shortly thereafter, I got Sciatic Nerve pain from my glute all the way down to my toe. It progressively got worse over the past 5 days. In fact, I just came from the doctor (it was THAT bad)

One of my near and dear friends (also a Celiac) just called me and asked how I was doing. When I "fessed up" about my ailment, he said that when he gets glutened he immediately gets sciatic issues that lasts for a week.

Does this happen to any of you? In the past, I just had the usually gluten symptoms (diarrhea, fatigue, etc.) NEVER pain. And, this is the most pain I have ever had in my life.

Does Gluten Make You More Athletic?

My friend is Coeliac. He has made the following statement:

Quote

When I was in grade 1 in 2000, I was the second-fastest runner in a 100 metre race. I got second place and have my ribbon from it to this day. Later that year, I went on a gluten free diet. I was never the most sensitive individual to gluten, though I did get sick with unbearable stomach cramps from time to time and wasn't gaining any weight.

Ever since being gluten free, I seemed to not be placing well as far as my athletics went. I was the third-fastest runner in a 100 metre race in grade 2 (I was on and off gluten for a little while) but in grade 3, I just didn't run very quickly at all and came second-last for most of the years after that!

Would this be due to the fact that I've been gluten free do you think? I was doing a lot more training in these years, but it doesn't seem to have completely resolved how quickly I run in proportion to other students.

What do you have to say. Do you think he's just making an excuse or that there may be some validity in his statement? I've kind of given up knowing how this all relates to health and fitness so I'd appreciate a response as I'm just rather
