Oral Allergy Syndrome And Celiac

I'm new to forums in general but I had a question I couldn't find answered anywhere. It seems that there are quite a few Celiacs out there who also have Oral Allergy Syndrome (the cross-reaction condition where your body views certain fruits, nuts, and/or vegetables as tree pollen, grass pollen etc). I am one of those number. I had read a couple posts (which was also suggested by a friend of mine) that some oral allergy symptoms can decrease once Celiac is diagnosed and a Gluten free diet is begun. Have any of you out there heard of this or found it to be true (or false)?

I was diagnosed with Celiac only two weeks ago and have been Gluten Free since. It's limiting and I'm finding the "forever" part of Gluten Free rather daunting. I was just curious if there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon like getting to eat a fresh apple for the first time in 10 years. My Oral Allergy is limited to my lip, palette, tongue and upper throat which I believe is typical. I'm only (severely) allergic to the tree pollen but all nuts, fresh fruit, and most fresh veggies (except leafs like lettuce and endive) have been out for me for a decade. I'm 23 and forever seems a really long time. Anyone have or have heard of OAS being influence by gluten-free? My thought to it is that your immune system will calm down on gluten-free and perhaps react less. I'm not a science-y person but it was just a (hopeful) thought. Thanks for reading!

After New Diagnosis Plus Additional Food Allergies Should I See A Nutritionist?

Newly diagnosed celiac with multiple food allergies such as: all grains, pineapple, all nuts except almonds and cashews, corn, garlic, onions, pepper, cinnamon, coffee, tea, cocoa, certain fish and shellfish. I have ALOT of digestive problems obviously and a small hiatal hernia as well as heart palpitations that have decreased since removing allergies- although I've been getting new funky beats. My questions are 1. Anyone see a dietician to work out a good diet 2. Anyone have a decrease in allergies once their gut started to heal? Im hoping to not continue to be so allergic to everything. 3. Heart palpitations- how many of you suffer and how many have seen a decrease? Thanks

How Long Until I Can Drink Milk Again?

I have been eating gluten free for about a month now. I feel fabulous until I drink milk. Of course, with some research, I have found that I need to stop drinking milk due to the casein until my intestines heal. How long can I expect that to be? A few months, a year? Thanks!

"borderline" Celiac

I was finally diagnosed with Celiac on Monday after having several tests come back "borderline" positive. My symptoms haven't really been digestive (though somewhat they have been), for the most part my symptoms were neurological (twitches, numbness, ect).

My endoscopy results were fuzzy, with an unusual concentration of lymphocytes but barely any blunting of the villi.
My tTG antibody test was a 10, whereas the cutoff is 8. (In other words, it's barely positive)
The DNA Test came back heterozygous for DQ2 (if I remember correctly... I don't have the sheet in front of me, but the doctor said it have me a moderate risk of Celiac (1:35))

With all 3 of those tests coming back "borderline" positive, he went ahead and told me I was most likely positive for Celiac.

What do you guys think of the results? Is the doctor right? I personally believe he is right, but the tests are so... fuzzy. I've been on the gluten-free diet only since Monday now, so I can't tell a difference yet. Hopefully in the next few weeks or months I'll know for sure if gluten was the culprit behind my annoying neurological symptoms.

Celiac Vs Intolerance + G6Pd

Wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if it's the wrong board.

I've been trying to read more about Gluten Intolerance, and whether there's a difference between it and Celiac but couldn't find a good answer. Anyone know of a good web site explaining that or could try explaining here?

I also just found out I have G6PD, but not sure how much it's effecting me yet (might just be a carrier). Anyone else here who has G6PD symptoms and celiac? How do you cope without beans and soya?

Diarrhea, Pain, Nausea - Glutened?

Hello,

Gave my 12 year old daughter ceviche yesterday. She has been 100% gluten-free since intestinal surgery on 1/1/12. Last night pain started in her belly, then nausea, then diarrhea from 3:00 on to 10:00 this morning. She is home from school "sick" again.

I know there is a lot on this forum about being "glutened" - so I called the restaurant and asked. (never thought ceviche would have gluten!) - anyway, they said there is gluten in the seasoning they used.

My question is could that small amount of gluten give her all these symptoms? I'm still trying to learn what works best for her, poor thing. She said "mom, all I want is to feel well".

Also she was in school all day yesterday with gas pains (before eating the ceviche). This was due I believe to eating Baby Bell cheese.

Thanks for any input.

From,
A confused, guilty, and overwhelmed mother

Hi all -

Being gluten free is a new journey for me. Took me a while to figure it out as I had no belly symptoms at all. I was wondering if anyone else has had mood symptoms - such as aniexty or depression - from gluten? And if they got much better after going gluten free?

Thanks!

Allergies And Ncgi

My 4 yr old has a strong allergy to wheat =, the biopsy showed she did not have celiac. I call her NCGI because after we took her off gluten she has changed so much for the better. She was also diagnosed with a ton of other food allergies. Is it possiable that she reacted so strongly to all the other foods because of her gluten intolerance?

More Susceptible To Viruses?

My 11 year old is making the slow recovery that I read in other posts, 11 weeks into the new diet. Our spirits are getting pretty low because besides the setbacks from accidental glutening and living this new spartan diet, he seems to catch a new virus each week. I am wondering if others have experienced increased sensitivity to random virus'? I'm guessing his immune system is just very weak. My second question - have people seen increased sensitivity to other obscure foods like raw veggies or leafy greens (even cooked)?

Bloooooooated

Agh. I got glutened last Friday by a restaurant. I had thought I was doing better, but I think I slipped up at work and re-glutened myself by accidental cross contamination of my lunch in the company microwave. The timing for this afternoon's new round of reflux and stomach pain would fit that scenario. Now my stomach is swollen and blah I feel like crap. Except for the ravenous hunger pangs that have set in.

The bloating, gas, and massive appetite had vanished once I went gluten free about a year ago. I think I had forgotten how miserable I felt back then!

Dairy Products On A Gluten Free Diet?

I am trying to give up all dairy products, because I know that in the early stages of being gluten free, this is usually helpful.

I have been gluten free now for a month...feel a lot better, but there are still a few lingering symptoms.

Right now, the only dairy product I consume is Organic milk...just a little with my gluten free cereal in the morning.

Do you think this is bad or is it okay to just have a little dairy? Could this small amount be affecting me still? I really need cereal and like to have atleast a little milk with cereal. Does anyone drink organic milk on a gluten free diet..or know if that really makes a difference? Or should I just eliminate the milk altogether?

Thanks!

I was diagnosed after 6 years of Iron Deficiency Anemia: and severe bloating. I cannot grasp enough information from my kids on their GI symptoms either way... Should I start with drawing Celiac Panels on them?

I was diagnosed with Celiac from a positive blood test for the disease back in November of 2010. I have not had the endoscopy performed yet. Should this be done in order to be 100% sure? If I stay away from Gluten I am usually fine.
Bowel Problems Even After Going Gluten Free

Hello, My daughter is 21 and was diagnosed w/ celiac disease a year ago. After we begged and pleaded for the genetic blood test from her gastrologist.

Here's the problem: She still has sporadic bowel problems even though she is on a gluten free diet. She has bloody bowel movements, but says she doesn't feel like she has been glutened. And then the next day she will have normal bowel movements. Does anyone else have this problem? I think she should have a colonoscopy, but she is avoiding that. Her current gastrologist diagnosed her and then that was it. No follow up, no direction on how to deal with and what to expect with this disease.
any information is much appreciated!
