1. I vomited BLOOD after eating at the Beverly Hills Hilton! BEWARE Celiac Sufferers! The Beverly Hills Hilton is NOT a safe, gluten free environment even though they will tell you that they are! This hotel does NOT take care when preparing meals for those afflicted with allergies or auto-immune diseases such as Celiac.  My experience at this hotel landed me in the Emergency Room at Cedars – Sinai hospital on the 1st day of our trip. It subsequently RUINED my entire trip, traumatized my 8 year old daughter, and subsequently causes me anxiety when eating out now, and it was all due to the NEGLECT of the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel staff. Staff was told to refer me to their insurance company immediately after they realized what happened and would not discuss the concerns I had about their food prep process.  The insurance company called immediately and offered me a 4 night stay at the SAME hotel and $750, to which I rejected. There was no way I was returning to the place where I went through one of the WORST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. We then discussed costs for my trip (which was SUBSTANTIALLY more than $750), to which they rejected. I feel as though this concerning information needs to be shared so that others don’t end up in the same situation as myself.  Don’t let this hotel ruin your vacation or weekend away – as they did mine.  I am fearful for those with Celiac (such as myself), who could end up with gluten POISONING (as I did). Since my diagnosis 7 years ago – this is the only time I have been sick when eating out. I am meticulous about how I order and what I eat. I had witnesses that heard how I ordered and what was said. I am not at fault in this situation, the hotel is and I am concerned that they don’t take Celiac seriously and that someone else could become quite ill as well. I travel extensively for my job and this experience was due WHOLLY to the inadequate, negligent and carelessness of restaurant staff and on the lack of safe food handling procedures at this hotel.  Please save yourself a trip to the Emergency room, or worse, and go to another hotel. (As an aside, this hotel is mediocre at best. The rooms are no different than most other middle of the line hotels. It definitely isn’t high end, though it likes to pretend it is.  Service is marginal (aside from security and valet staff – they were great). You are paying for the name and location. I’ve stayed at nicer Sheratons, Crown Plazas and Radissons.)
2. hi everyone. I have been gluten free over 30 days now since my diagnosis and it has been an up and down process. I have accidentally injested gluten twice, last time a week ago. Overall I have been feeling better but almost every evening for the last week, I get really sick to my stomach. It is usually gone in the morning, although not today. Is this normal?  The only thing new this week is trader joes coffee a cocoa. I have been searching the net and can't find anything that confirms its gluten free. Ingredients are ground coffee, unsweetened cocoa, and chocolate fudge oil.
3. Do you know what I miss so much at summer BBQs? Veggie burgers. I don't mean the ones that taste like fake meat, I mean those ones that are made from grains, beans or legumes, maybe some cheese. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm quite sensitive, so certified gluten free is best, but I'd be happy to research non-certified suggestions as well.
4. The following article from the Celiac Support Association was super interesting to me.  I am trying to digest it all and apologize if it has been posted here before.   I am always amazed at how much research our family has had to do to advocate for our health and wellness.   In case my link is messed up, the article is: "Reviewing medical literature:  a primer for those living with Celiac disease The safety, toxicity or otherwise of gluten... Author:  Dr Geoff Forbes (MBBS, MD, FRACP) is a Gastroenterologist at Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, Australia; and Clinical Professor with the University of Western Australia.  He is a clinician with expertise in immune conditions of the gut and in clinical nutrition.  He is a teacher and researcher, and as he has family members with Celiac disease, he has a first hand knowledge of living with the gluten-free diet."   It is so refreshing to have such an advocate for the celiac community.  I just hope Australia heeds his words of wisdom!  I am still astounded at what a difference the strict legislation in Australia has made for our family.  I just pray that it stays that way and that other countries around the world follow their lead.  I think New Zealand currently has the same standards, but am not positive.   There is so much good stuff in the article, but I love the commentary on "Interpretation by others of a study after publication", and the first paragraph (repeated in bold as last paragraph of his summary and conclusion) really resonates with me.
5. Just wanted to share this email I received on Jan 20th 2014 from Harney and Sons Fine Teas:   "Thank you for your interest in our teas. All of our teas are gluten-free with one possible exception. The Soba [roasted buckwheat] comes from a supplier that handles gluten products so it may contain traces."
6. Hi, My dietitian has once told me that the hot coffee cups (that are served in Starbucks etc) contain gluten in their edges. Do you have problems with it? I keep ordering coffee in mugs ever since, but I can not have coffee to go obviously. I have been diagnosed celiac 5-6 months ago insidentally and I do not have symptoms, so I am afraid I am getting glutened without knowing.
7. I am moving in with my boyfriend and I need some advice.  He is a gluten eater but is going to go gluten and soy free for me as I am very sensitive.  I have celiac as well as a soy allergy.  Well when I moved into my current apartment I spent almost a week straight cleaning and recleaning the kitchen and dishwasher, oven etc to try to sanitize it as best as humanly possible to reduce my chances of cross contamination.  So what I would like to know is:   1. what are the best ways to absolutely scrub the living hell out of the kitchen that was full of gluten so it's safe for me?   2. best way to really clean the dishwasher?  When I lived with my parents I was constantly very ill from cross contamination from the dishwasher, so is there a cleaner or something I can run through there to really strip it of anything dangerous to me?  What about the silverware rack if it has nicks and cuts from knives?  The one in my current apartment was like that so I completely tossed it so I wouldn't even have the risk. But I would hate to do that to him if I could just deep bleach it or something.   I just want to get everything as safe as I possibly can because CC is something that really hits me and I cannot afford to live with that.
8. Chilis

I'm meeting co workers at a local Chili's tomorrow for drinks to celebrate a retirement. They will eat chips and salsa, I plan not to eat. I would, however, like to order a drink. I'm searching, but has anyone had a margarita from there?
9. I'm wondering if anyone maintains a list of safe foods and where they can be found? I can do web searches but then find products that are not available locally. Lots of items can be ordered online but then comparing costs gets complicated. If this isn't a resource currently available, how could it be suggested to a reputable celiac organization? I don't think it would require lots of research, the community can contribute. I find myself getting confused because there isn't a way to see products like this: Manufacturer, Item, Retailer, Cost comparison by appropriate size or weight w/ shipping and tax. I have to keep costs down. So with my bad eyesight, I search with one window open to find if there is a gluten free product, another for the manufacturers information, cost and ordering information, and several more to comparison shop. Then I have a window to find if it's available at the local store. Oh yes, and I have to have the calculator open at all times along with notepad so my brain can keep track but that doesn't account for shipping and tax variations. To quote Charlie Brown... "Aaarrgghh!"

11. Safe Food List At Vg's Foog Center

Yesterday my husband and I went to VG's Food center and found a gluten free food list at the service counter. I thought this was very interesting. I am always looking for new things that are gluten-free, and different places that are easier to shop. When I picked up the list I was surprised to find that it was 2 pages long. It was organized by category, product, brand, and put into two very easy to read columns. Click here to go to their website. It also has a neat feature where u can build your own shopping list. I haven't used this much, but thought it was kinda cool. I am sure most of you celiac's have resorted to lots of home cooking, like I have. We do go out to eat about twice a week, but it can be a toss up some days. I haven't been cross-contaminated in over 6 moths from a restaurant, but the fear still crosses my mind when someone suggests someplace new to eat.
