My son is 8 years old and has been having a hard time with gaining weight. His dr first said that he is a picky eater and then a form of control. after many efforts of trying to help him gain weight he continued to decline. He went from 85% on the growth chart to 4%. He was admitted to the hospital in Feb. of this year due to failure to thrive. He complained about abdominal pain and was using the bathroom 45 times a day. He was in the hospital for a week only to be released saying all test came back negative. They referred him to a local children's hospital but we didn't get a visit until 2 months later. one month before his appointment I put him on gluten free diet to see if that helped and it did. His abdominal pain went away completely but he still had bathroom problems. They did the endoscope and said everything came back normal. When they did the colonoscopy he had what looked like seeds throughout his colon. They were black and white. The Dr told me that the "seeds" were stuck to his colon and she had tried to flush them out but they were stuck and she would have to scrap them off which she wouldn't do because he is a child and she didn't want to damage his colon. Needless to say she called me and said that all the biopsies came back negative and she diagnosed him with functional abdominal pain IBS!!!! WTH I know that this cannot be IBS. He has not grown in height in over 2 years, he is severally underweight 47 pounds, he is extremely weak has no energy and goes to the bathroom 20+ times a day!!! Please if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do please help.

they said that they tested him for Celiac while he was in the hospital and it came back negative. He has gone from a healthy active boy to barely having and strength to do anything. So far his diagnosis is: Growth retardation, Weight loss, Functional Abdominal Pain IBS. They just gave me pain medication for him that he can take 4x a day and said to give him a probiotic. He is currently on Homebound medical school program because he has to have access at all times to the bathroom. His weight is exactly the same as it was in 2010. He also gets a fever every month of 102 that lasts for 3 days and then goes away. I don't know what else to do. I am going to go and get all his medical records on monday that way I can go through them. Could being gluten free for a month have affected his endo?

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
