Celiac And Ibs

Does anyone here have celiac and IBS?  Is IBS caused by the damage from celiac.  It's impossible to eat both a gluten free and IBS diet since that IBS diet is based on so many things that celiacs can not eat.  SO do we just eat gluten free and suffer the effects of eating IBS trigger foods?  I have constant lower gut pain, gas and cramping, it's sore to the touch and very tender.  It feels bruised inside.  These are the symptoms that led to my celiac diagnosis but I am continuing to have problems with my gut.  

Anyone else?

'ibs' is what they told me i had when they didn't know what was wrong with me.  also 'you must have colitis' - which neither was true.  i have other food sensitivities that i figured out using a food journal.  every person is different.  maybe try that?  i kept track of EVERYTHING i ate, every ingredient, and used a scale from 1-7 with 4 being 'eh' lolz - that way i can be picky - i'll have this but skip the peppers, etc.  i also have a reaction to soy that mimics a gluten reaction.

Thanks, I am going to have to start writing it all down so I can notice a pattern.  I have a gluten type reaction to corn which really complicates things.  Corn is in everything.  I was first diagnosed with IBS and when my liver enzymes were elevated then finally I got them to listen to me and then I was diagnosed with celiac.  

I'm going to dig out a notebook and start writing everything down.

I got the IBS diagnosis about 30 years before the celiac diagnosis.  It was an incorrect diagnosis.  Being gluten-free cleared up the IBS symptoms.

I agree ! I had IBS for years (couple of decades) before getting sick with a bad virus that wouldn't let me keep anything in for a week. After that I could not tolerate gluten at all (took a while to figure out). Anyway, 5 months after being gluten-free my doc tested me for celiac and of course it was negative....but I am very sensitive to gluten.

 

I have 'fixed my IBS' but eliminating gluten completely - and avoiding dairy 99% of the time and soy as well.

I am sensitive to very low levels of gluten.  I avoid dairy but I do need to be more careful with corn.  

The gi said that I had celiac and " a touch of ibs"  I guess I just need to be patient, more diligent and give it more time.

The gastro doctor I saw at the start of may said I don't have Celiac, I have IBS without ever scoping me.

I don't know what IBS means anymore.

I BS U ha ha.

 

GFreeMO, I rarely eat process foods because it's so hard to know what ingredient in that box of junk causes a problem.

I eat mostly produce and meat.

Exceptions would be the bread for my gluten challenge and cheeze and jam.

So if you eat eggs and you find it makes you sick then you can keep track of it.

I'm having less pain since I stopped eating tomatoes so I'm suspicious of them.

      In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! There are other things that may cause elevated tTg-IgA levels, but in general a reaction to gluten is the culprit:

      Nacina, Knitty Kitty has given you good advice. But I would say/add find a Fat Soluble B-1 like Benfotiamine for best results.  The kind found in most Multivitamins have a very low absorption rate. This article shows how taking a Fat Soluble B-1 can effectively help absorption by 6x to7x times. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/journal/thiamine-deficiency-and-diabetic-polyneuropathy quoting from the article.... "The group ingesting benfotiamine had maximum plasma thiamine levels that were 6.7 times higher than the group ingesting thiamine mononitrate.32" Also, frequency is much more important than amount when it comes to B-Vitamin. These are best taken with meals because they provide the fat for better absorption. You will know your B-Vitamin is working properly when your urine becomes bright yellow all the time. This may take two or three months to achieve this.......maybe even longer depending on how low he/you are. The Yellow color is from excess Riboflavin bypassing the Kidneys....... Don't stop them until when 2x a day with meals they start producing a bright yellow urine with in 2 or 3 hours after the ingesting the B-Complex...... You will be able to see the color of your urine change as the hours go by and bounce back up after you take them in the evening. When this happens quickly......you are now bypassing all the Riboflavin that is in the supplement. The body won't absorb more than it needs! This can be taken as a "proxy" for your other B-Vitamin levels (if taken a B-Complex) ...... at least at a quick and dirty level......this will only be so for the B-1 Thiamine levels if you are taking the Fat Soluble forms with the Magnesium as Knitty Kitty mentioned. Magnesium is a Co-Factor is a Co-factor for both Thiamine and Vitamin D and your sons levels won't improve unless he also takes Magnesium with his Thiamine and B-Complex. You will notice his energy levels really pick up.  His sleeping will improve and his muscle cramps will get better from the Magnesium! Here is nice blog post that can help you Thiamine and it's many benefits. I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice God speed on your son's continued journey I used to be him.
