Since cutting out some ( not all ) gluten I have started to put on a bit of weight. Just a few pounds in two or three weeks. But as I have lost 4 st over the last year and a half, and still been falling slightly since last November, it seems a big coincidence. When I am well enough to shop I will check out the gluten free products at the supermarket and try to cut out as much as possible. Hope this is an answer for me at last.

Since celiac is an autoimmune disease just cutting down on gluten won't help. You don't have to buy expensive gluten free specialty foods to do a true gluten free trial. Go with whole unprocessed foods like fruit, veggies, beans, rice and fresh meats. To really tell if gluten is an issue for you all gluten needs to be cut out. If  you are still in the testing process for celiac don't go gluten free or gluten light until after all that testing is done.

As raven has pointed out, you really need to cut out all gluten to see any significant improvement in your many symptoms, especially in the anxiety

and agoraphobia you have told us about.

Hi Dozey,

 

I can't say for sure you aren't getting some benefit from reducing gluten in your diet.  With celiac disease the symptoms people get are so variable it is not easy to be absolutely sure about anything by judging symptoms.  It could be you are getting some improvement now.  My symptoms pre-gluten-free were not the same all the time.  With NCGI we also have a vague situation.  We don't know enough about it it at this point to say just what happens or when.

 

With celiac though the autoimmune response is triggered from any amount of gluten.  Less gluten may mean a smaller response for some people.  But to get no autoimmune response requires getting all gluten out of the diet.  And that is our goal, to eliminate the autoimmune response that damages our guts, and causes internal inflammation.  Hopefully when you go entirely gluten-free, you feel even better! :)

Hi, and thank you for your replies. With having a thyroid problem, b12 def and low vit D it is difficult to know what symptom goes with what! The anxiety and agoraphobia are certainly not so bad as they were and I am managing to get out fot a short walk most days, I even managed a trip to the supermarket yesterday! Although I feel shattered again this morning. I appreciate all your help and encouragement.

      That's a good idea. It can at least establish the potential for developing celiac disease and can help people decided between a celiac diagnosis and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). And it doesn't require a gluten challenge and can be had without a doctor's prescription.

      I have my endoscopy on Thursday, has anyone had the procedure done with a cough? I don't have a continuous cough, but every now and then throughout the day I have sort of coughing episodes. They are a lot better than they were but I called endoscopy and they said to speak to my gp and my gp got back to me and said I need to ask endoscopy if its ok if I have it done still.  Help!

      Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

      I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

      I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?
