Anyone Suffered Or Suffer From Asthma/shortness Of Breathe?

Of all all the symptoms I get, this is the one that annoy me the most, constipation is getting better, digestion too, energy as well but asthma is just being evil. I used to run often and do a lot of exercise 2-3 a week and this was never a major problem, I always felt a little heart rate rising of some short and a lack of breathe but as the last few months when everything got worse, asthma literally settle in.

I am always trying to catch my breathe and I know this inst panic attack or other things because I had the asthma worsen when I would take coffee, weed or get panic attack but this is just something that is constantly there. It seems to never go away, it honestly feel like i am constantly going to die from not breathing. I was never diagnosed with it and never took any medication for it, and as of right now, I am completely free of weed, coffee, melatonin and any medication.

I don't suffer with asthma, thankfully, but since before I was diagnosed with celiac disease I noticed that I regularly take in an involuntary breath.  It's a bit like when a child has been crying, and they take in staggered breath while trying to compose themselves.

I originally put it down to very low ferritin levels - which was noticed in blood tests when I was suffering from very weak muscles but my full blood count recently, seem normal - since being totally gluten free.

Do these symptoms sound familiar too you?

Not sure what you mean by the baby crying analogy but as far as weak muscle then yes, even walking is difficult now and I haven't exercise in 2 weeks because I feel too weak, it actually worsen since I went gluten free, Initially it didn't.

Good Morning.

My son has had lung issues for over ten years...first we thought it was damage from Forest Fires, then Asthma, but what it turned out to be was GERD.  At night he was asperating acid into his lungs which made all sorts of trouble.  For years we tried different gerd medications to no avail.  About a year gluten-free his constant "smoker's cough" became much less severe.

I have lung issues when I get overheated from exercise or run into a couple of my intolerances, It acts like asthma and I do need to carry an inhaler.

Do you have a cough with your lung issue?  If so, consider taking Betaine HCl.  Most doctors prescribe acid reducers for GERD when lack of acid is actually the issue so reducing acid further does nothing.  Taking HCl after each meal will provide the acid necessary to properly digest food.  it is suggested that it is taken one hour after each meal...but we were forgetting too often once busy after meals so we changed to right after meals.  Son improved further and hasn't used HCl in a while and lung issues are more rare finally.

Do you have an inhaler - strangely (or not) abuterol inhalers do not work for my son or myself - likely because we do not have Asthma, but other lung issue.

Talk to your doctor -- if you have developed Asthma or another lung issue -- it is nothing to mess around with.

Take care :)

PS...forgot to mention the getting worse gluten-free.  Sometimes with healing other inlolerances are revealed -- or are temporary -- this can also cause lung issues.

I don't have a lung issue or cough, I do occasionally seem to have extra mucus in my throat that I spit out, although quite rare lately but about but a year ago I would spit mucus daily. It also feel like I am about to get a cold every now and then but then it goes away.

I guess I misunderstood your post. Asthma and shortness of breath seemed like a lung issue to me.

Have a good day :)

Asthma seemed like a lung issue to me, too.  At least it was 30 years ago when I studied it in school.  :D

SOB can be caused by other things like heart disease or severe anemia and have nothing to do with the lungs.  The heart isn't moving the oxygen around properly or the blood can't store enough oxygen and the body wants more.  The body thinks the solution is to breathe more.

Have you been checked for anemia?  It should resolve but can take a few months gluten-free if its severe.

No i haven't been tested for crap as I need to work to pay bills and cant afford to take a day off, but I' fairly positive I have this as walking has become very difficult.

Looks like I'm not helping here.  Good luck to you.

I have the same issue. I believe it's a combination of my acid relux and sinus infections. We all have different symptoms. Karen could be on to something with the low levels. I have low iron and low vitamin D. My doc put me on lanoprazole for the GERD. It helps, but not all the way. So I'm taking further steps to see if alternatives will subside the problem. I know it's rough and money can be tight but do try to find a way to take care of yourself... otherwise things might get worse.

Wish you the best of luck.

If your shortness of breath is so bad that you have a hard time walking you need to be seen by a doctor to make sure nothing serious is going on. If there is no Urgent Care center near you go to the ER when the symptoms are active.

It's not the shortness of breath that makes it hard to walk, just my legs feeling very tired.

That combo could be a sign of heart problems or many other things. It could just be that you haven't healed enough yet from the celiac damage. If things should get worse do get to a doctor.

It doesn't sound like asthma to me. It sounds more like emphysema. Not trying to scare you, but you really should get it checked.

Um very nice, you succeeded in getting me scared as s$#& now, apparently if that's what you have you will likely die from it. Guess going gluten-free won't do much for it. I'll definitely get it checked.

It something I have honestly felt all my life though, but before it would happen very rarely, but as gluten symptoms showed up, it felt all the blockage from my guts was getting up to my heart.

I still feel it could be gluten linked as both seem to have worsen about the same.

If you catch it in time you will probably live long enough to die from something else. ;)

Well...even tho you started asking about asthma and some minor shortness of breath feeling and tiredness....when people tried to explain some common reasons for that, you knew it wasn't any of those things.

Too bad it's not severe anemia caused by Celiac. That is easily curable. Cured those issues for me.

Uh? i didn't know what? Why do people always assume when I ask a questions that I already have my own answer and just ask to ask.

I have asthma, severe and persistent, diagnosed by a PFT(lung function test). Have you had one of those done? I have to take Advair everyday 2/day or I will have an attack. Still I've been hospitalized twice in the last year and a half

Asthma and SOB are 2 different things. As others have mention you can get SOB from GERD or anxiety or anemia or other things. Maybe you should see a pulmonologist to see if it is indeed asthma. Like I said if it's asthma you will need to be on a controller medicine daily, it doesn't go away

I will call tomorrow for an appointment with my doctor, hopefully next week and will let you know what happen.

hopefully they will give you the PFT. Mine went undiagnosed for 2 years and the docs kept diagnosing upper respiratory infections. After 4 rounds of anitbiotics I was finally referred to a pulmonary specialist and by that time my lung volume was hyperinflated from the air trapped in them that my diaphram is now flattened. After 1 year on Advair it's starting to improve and it's reversable. The dr. that diagnosed me said I had the lungs of a 65 yr old woman. I was then diagnosed with acute adult onset asthma, which now my GI believes has been brought on by the gluten intolerance.

are you wheezing?

Because you disagreed or had a sarcastic answer for every suggestion you were given.

strangely (or not) abuterol inhalers do not work for my son or myself - likely because we do not have Asthma, but other lung issue.

agreed. this is why a PFT is best for diagnosis. they test before the albuterol and then you take 2 puffs of albuteral, wait 15min, and then they test again. Asthma will improve on the PFT after the albuteral but GERD or something else will not. It will also show obstructive patterns in the lungs (asthma), GERD wouldn't show an obstructive pattern. The best diagnostic tool is this test

Thank you and I am aware that I should be eating a "normal" diet until tested it's kind of been trial and error for my diet or more like just ERROR! I about 1-3 bites a meal I'm to a point that 99 percent of the time I'm having trouble swallowing just about everything occasionally I find either something or a very small window of time that allows me to get very little of something! I am basically getting zero nutrition what so ever because I take one bite of the meal that I usually just slaved over just to end up tossing it when it's all said and done...did anyone else ever experience anything like this?  I am more then open to suggestions! It is taking a very extreme toll on me and my body forsure

No! Do not start the gluten free diet until you know whether or not you will be having an endoscopy/biopsy to verify the blood antibody test results. Starting gluten free eating ahead of either form of diagnostic testing can invalidate the results. You don't want to allow the villous lining of the small bowel to experience healing ahead of testing by removing gluten.

We offer a ton of recipes here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/gluten-free-recipes/ and have done some articles on fast food places, but keep in mind that eating out is a common source of gluten contamination: https://www.celiac.com/search/?q=fast food&quick=1&type=cms_records2 Many colleges now offer allergen-friendly, and sometimes gluten-free options in their student cafeterias: https://www.celiac.com/search/?&q=colleges&type=cms_records2&quick=1&search_and_or=and&sortby=relevancy PS - Look into GliadinX, which is a sponsor here, but many studies have been done on it which show that it may break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines.

Thank you! What do you recommend in the next 7 weeks until I see my Doctor?  Just start my Gluten free diet?
