hi, i'm new to this whole celiac thing and i was wondering about eating out. has anyone gone to the Golden Corral? What did you think of it and did you notice many gluten-free foods. Also, is smoked hams gluten-free? Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll have many more questions.

We used to have a Golden Corral here where I live. I usually prefer buffets because of celiac disease. I can't tell you for sure on the smoked ham - if it is truly hickory smoked and not flavor "smoked" it should be fine. On the buffet side, for the meats I will ask a server if the broth is just meat juice or something else added. There's always veggies and salads too, but of course the dessert bar is out :( . I stick to the ice cream or go back to the salad bar for pudding, jello or fruits.

I am the opposite.

I am petrified of Buffets.

I live in VEgas and the only one I will go to is the Bellagio because they can tell you all of the ingredients (though it is a giant pain in the butt).

Way too much cross-contamination -- too much people using the same ladels for the same food , same knives for different meats ---- I used to get sick there all the time.

Even their mashed potaotes are instant and contain flour/dry mix/powders.....

I advise against it...strongly...

Constantly! I don't want everything to cost as much as a KIND bar, as great as they are.  Happy most of the info is available to us to make smart decisions for our health, just need to do a little more research.

Be sure to keep eating gluten daily until all testing is completed.  Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

You can always to the gluten challenge later, after your pregnancy, should you need a formal diagnosis. I think it's best to play it safe in this case.

Very true. I also suffered from candidiasis which had affected my intestines and toes. I think this might have triggered my gluten intolerance/celiac.

Welcome to the forum community, @Jesmar! The HLA DQ2 and DQ8 genes were the original halotypes identified with the potential to develop celiac disease. Since then, other genes have been discovered that apparently afford a predisposition to celiac disease. As is always the case, these new discoveries are not yet common knowledge and not yet widely dispersed in the medical community. It is not genetically as black and white as we once thought.
