For Those Trying To Gain Weight

i have been having trouble gaining weight, or keeping weight on.  maybe someone has suggested this before, but there is an app i got for my phone that is called 'my fitness pal' - it's free (yay) turns out, i felt like i was eating a ton of food and not gaining but this thing calculated my recommended calorie intake based on what i weighed, how tall, etc and how much weight i wanted to put on.  i am still not to my goal, but have gained 6-7 lbs since then end of august.  and it's staying on ::)  my pants are fitting!  yayyyy!!!

anyways, this thing will even scan a barcode and tell you serving size and calories.  you can double the portion or cut it into whatever you want.  it stores the things you eat every day/on a regular basis and it will multi-add ie;  i eat cereal with banana for breakfast (alot, evidently lolz) and it comes up as a list.  i click multi-add, check boxes for cereal, banana, milk POW added quickly.

*disclaimer! - i do not work for this company nor am i affiliated with any of it's owners.  i can barely work my phone  ;)  hahaha

ps - my son saw this app on my phone and cringed("oh, mom, you're not counting calories, are you?!"  i said i'm kind of doing it backwards....), so i guess 'fitness' people use it and i'm guessing it's handy if you're trying to lose, as well.  he has the 'betus (diabetes type 1) and uses it to track his carbs/calories

this would also work as a handy food journal if you're on the go  :)

I love my fitness pal I too am using it "backwards" I'm still healing so I havent gained anything but i used it 2.5 years prediagnosis and the weightloss i recorded on the app was one crucial peice of info that helped lead to my diagnosis. Every time I thought i knew how much i had lost i looked back and was able to give actual numbers to my doctor and I figured out the weight loss was way worse than i had thought. Without it i may not have gotten diagnosed because i always underestimated my actual weight loss. It also showed the doctor that i was eating plenty and shouldn't be losing so she looked harder at the problem.

i just went in and stepped on the scale - 118  :)  i am wanting to be 125, but now finally on my way.  i was stuck right at 110-112 then i would lose a pound or 2 and gain it back.  this is almost 2 weeks and haven't lost any weight.  so much easier to see exactly what i've been eating and what i am lacking, too, or that wow, even though that's a salad, all the stuff i put on there just made it 250 calories hahaha.  or, o gosh i still have 875 calories left and it's already 4pm - time for a cupcake!  lolz !

using it for pre-diagnosis - that is a good idea - i wish i had thought of that - it would have been easy to say:  look!  i eat ALOT!!!  and still wasting away.....  my dx was a long time coming.........

my calorie goal is 2130 per day, but i never add in my exercise.  so long as i get my intake right, i guess it works.  i would hardly call my physical activity 'exercise' anyway  run after child, walk around parking lot ("where in creation did i park??")  run upstairs, forget what i came up for, run down stairs, remember what i needed upstairs, laundry lifts, etc :P

it is very nice to have a little weight on my bones and not have my hands freezing cold all the time, too!

I'm trying to gain weight too.  It can be a challenge.  Sometimes eating more makes me lose weight becasue it can make all my food pass through me undigested.  I got down pretty low but I'm getting better again now.

I can relate dilettansteph, If i dare eat 5 or 6 small meals a day i'd be on the toliet everyday.....

I've been gluten/grain/dairy free since March, with one time that I screwed up and ate gluten covered sweet potato fries.

April 2014 - i weighed 136 pounds, as a 5'10" guy my doctor was starting to get concerned, thought I was freaking starving myself, no joke.

July 2014 - I am currently stuck at 143 pounds, my body will not add any further weight.  My stools also have taken a pause on recovery, and continue to look like hulks decomposed remains....

What always amazes me is how dramatic of a difference this disease or other food intolerances change people, most people on this forum have troubles losing weight, I can eat all day and gain very little. (trying to improve on that...)

Ya'll found a food that helps?  I can only notice improvement with fruit/veggie/nut butter smoothies, very strange

I am not trying to gain weight ( I just lost a ton ), just trying to quit losing it so damn fast. It has slowed in the last few weeks, not nearly as drastic as it was but I just bought a pair of size 8 jeans two weeks ago and they are already loose on me. I know, I know, I should be happy I lost weight when some people try their hardest to lose it and my fairy Celiacmother heard my wish and I magically lost weight. People keep asking me my secret and I always have this really blank look on my face, I don't know what to tell them.  I was telling people how, but then I get comments like " you are so lucky". Like they are jealous that I got sicker than a dog to lose it all because it was "easy" for me to lose weight without trying.

I wish I would have had free reign to eat what I wanted and not gain weight when I could eat gluten, I would kill for some fried wontons and eggrolls right now.

I would also like to know what foods are helping people not lose weight.

I got down to 104 # and I'm 5'5".  Digestive enzymes helped.  I think fat malabsorption was part of the problem.  I gained 10 lbs and I'm feeling better.  Now I am eating cheese and macadamia nuts without having to run to the toilet.  I also made a change to my diet which I think reduced gluten contamination.

I've lost about 40 lbs. since realizing I was gluten sensitive a little over a year ago. I'm also dairy sensitive; once I realized I was gluten sensitive, I made an strong effort to avoid both gluten and dairy, though I'm not 100% gluten and dairy free. I think I lost most of the weight from avoiding restaurants and prepared foods and also becoming more active. Once I started to feel better, I felt like I had more confidence and more energy. Right now, my weight has been steady for a couple of months, and I'm at a healthy weight so as long as I'm no longer losing I should be fine.

I tend to have trouble making sure that I'm eating enough. Fitness Pal has been very helpful for me, too! I don't use it all the time, just occasionally to check up on my eating habits.

I need to gain about 10 pounds. A few years ago, I was overweight. I got down to what I wanted, but now I lost even more and I can't gain it. I eat more than I really want, but it is notworking. I did start taking digestive enzymes and hopefully that will help. My gut is pretty messed up so it might take awhile.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?
    • Aussienae
I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.
    • trents
What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
