I have a few friends with celiac that suffered for years with symptoms. I have tolerated wheat and grain for years but just 3 weeks ago started having severe stomach and abdomen cramping, diarrhea. If I ate something with gluten it would get worse. No vomiting but nausea. Eliminating gluten has improved these symptoms. (in order to work I had to take immodium). Is it possible I have celiac or intolerance and it has come on that fast. Looks like the next step is a blood test? Any help is appreciated

Hi Susie and Welcome to the Forum!

It is possible for Celiac symptoms to appear suddenly.  But if it is Celiac, don't be fooled - it could have been going on for quite some time and it has just recently gotten bad enough for the symptoms to show.  Or it could be something else entirely.  Yes, I think you should get tested.  Don't go gluten-free until all of the testing is complete though.  If you're gluten free when they run the tests it will come back negative whether you have Celiac or not.

Good luck!

It could be celiac disease so you may as well get checked, just so you know. The best celiac disease tests are:

tTG IgA and tTG IgG

DGP IgA and DGP IgG

EMA IgA

total serum IgA (a control test)

AGA IgA and AGA IgG (older and less reliable test)

Keep eating gluten (equivalent to 1-2 slices of bread per day) until testing is complete.

This report has more info on testing if you are interested: Open Original Shared Link

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I can relate! Up until last year I could eat gluten with no problem- although looking back, I always did have some bloating and cramping after eating gluten.

Hurry to get the bloodwork done so you can be gluten free. I was gluten free (because I felt better) and the bloodwork came  back normal. Its a little tricky to diagnose when you have been gluten-free for a while.

Good luck to you!

Cindy

That's a good idea. It can at least establish the potential for developing celiac disease and can help people decided between a celiac diagnosis and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). And it doesn't require a gluten challenge and can be had without a doctor's prescription.

I have my endoscopy on Thursday, has anyone had the procedure done with a cough? I don't have a continuous cough, but every now and then throughout the day I have sort of coughing episodes. They are a lot better than they were but I called endoscopy and they said to speak to my gp and my gp got back to me and said I need to ask endoscopy if its ok if I have it done still.  Help!

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?
