Girls Only - Need Advice On Putting On Weight

My husband has weight issues, lost fat from face and can see all bones in face and lost butt and thigh girth. His arms are so thin too. All ribs are noticable. He tries to gain weight, but it lands around his waist now. His hernias (which were repaired more than once) hurt too much for him to lift weights. Seems that there's no answers for this.....

Hmmm, I'm not sure other solutions there could be for the weight loss. Being completely gluten-free--no mess-ups--is what comes to my mind first. I would say those of you who weighed more initially should be able to gain that weight back...however, if you were always on the skinny side, that may continue--you may never be "voluptuous" per se. I guess another thing to ck would be for other illnesses or disorders that cause weight loss, thyroid is the first to come to mind. I know there are also some meds that can causing wasting syndrome--causing you to lose fat from specific areas of the body or make them droop--like the face, butt etc. The ones I am thinking of are immune drugs, specifically for HIV, so that probably doesn't apply to most of you.... ! But there are others out there. Matilda--what exactly does your daily menu look like? Perhaps you can share it and we can brainstorm with you. If you think there is a chance of not being gluten-free, go back to basics--whole foods, unprocessed foods, and then branch out from there--you can track contamination easier that way when you introduce new foods. and i would say don't risk going to dinner until you start gaining the weight back. if you have to go out, bring something with you. don't be embarrassed. i have brought tv dinners with me several times and the servers have always been willing to heat them up for me :)

I just love it here! [giggle] I feel like I'm sitting around in my livingroom with my girlfriends girl-talking.

Matilda your posting was great. [giggle] I loved it! [giggle] You can buy boobs; I think the FDA approved them after all that time, (they really should have done that in the begining.)

Anyways back to the shopping trip -- I'm a royal diva too and love being a girly girl and have walk-ins the size of a New York City Studio. But I just had the same experience looking in the mirror, but not the boobs. I'm just so skinny. Like in the movie Goodfellas (my Goombas) with the wizeguy thing goin on he said -- she weighed "... a hundred annnd notin'..." That's me a 100 and nothin, and its not painful to look at [yet] you can see rib bones a little on my back. but I can't gain weight and my muscle mass is O too. Whats that? Ha! Mr. Muscle mass left the building about 4yrs ago when this celiac disease & thyroid thingy happened. I was alway 108 - 115 at 5'5" I guess maybe now I'm shrinking 5'4". And the guys think it's hot to look skinny... but I was a 2, and like you Matitda I'm a 0.

Thank you thank you jenvan for all those great beauty products links. I love www.sephora.com too. It's like a diva's paradise at the Boca Mall.

I am 25 and having many of the same issues described above.

I am 5'7'' and down to 89 lbs. I am a little scared at this point actually. About a year ago I weighed at least 109, if not more. In addition to being way too thin, I also have lost my breasts and rump! I am quite embarrassed because a number of my size 0 clothes don't even fit right anymore!!! At this point I am just trying to cope. I am thinking about seeing a doctor to discuss options, but I don't even know if any exist. Does anyone have any good tips? Is there any ideas for packing on pounds? Eating more does not seem to do the trick for me, perhaps someone can relate and help me out with a similar expereince and their success?

I appreciate anything

BetseyCo -- I wish I has some answers how to gain weight. have you had your thyroid checked? Hyper - Hypo? I have since got my thyroid under control.

Also for the past few month I felt sicker after I broke a back tooth and the filling came out. OUCH! I went on antibiotics pennicilen (sp) based. I alway have problem with them. Not this time....With in a day of taking them I felt better, and by the time the 10 days were up I felt great. I had the root canal, and recovered w/out pain med. (medication has gulten and corn and dairy in them I can't tolerate) I really didn't have any pain! And since my tooth was fixed I've been able to gain a few, 107 up from 100. I just wonder if I had a gum disease or problem that was throwing my entire body off. I still have major food problems but not as bad as they were a month ago.

I don't hva any answers BetseyCo. Please keep posting here and in other areas our celiac cyberspace friends here are very helpful!

Thanks for your support. Some posts have mentioned trying ensure drinks, i bought some at the store. I made a drs appt for tomorrow and I am hoping she will have some insight. I am going to try the thyroid thing, and also get checked out for a few other things too, like mono and epstein barr virus. I have been sick with flu like symptoms every two weeks for about 3 months. Not sure what it could be but I am hoping to find something that is causing the weight issues!

Anyone have any luck and gaining a few?

I was down to 99-100 and now I'm 105.5 today I'm up a few pounds since I've been going to my chiropractor. He said he's going to help me gain a few more. Who knows....

As far as ensure drinks goes... I did some research for someone else here and I found out the ensure drinks have SOY in them. I believe SOY is poison and cauise my thyroid problems to begin with in the first place.

Not to shift the topic on here completely away from fat and onto a shrine to Jenvan, but since you mentioned Bare Escentuals, i had to comment. Jen, Thanks so much for recommending this stuff (i think it was a few months ago). I just got the start-up kit and i am OBSESSED! I got a facial and the aestetician recommended it and i remembered your recommendations and finally bought it- i immediately threw out everything else i own and now i am finally sure that my products are gluten-free. My skin feels totally different and is thanking me profusely :P Not to mention, this whole week people have been stopping me on the streets telling me how much my skin glows!

Ok i might as well comment on the actual topic of the post, I have a similar problem- i am not overweight but everytime i lose a pound it is in my face and chest...but i noticed for me it is most extreme when i am not on the pill. On birth control, my boobs were the perfect size for my body and my face had much more shape, but they both went down when i went off the pill last year (notably my periods stopped as well so i think its a hormone problem). The only thing i know that gives you a bigger chest is the pill.

BetseyCo--I hope you've found out what was going on since your last post. Don't lose hope. I'm 5'6 1/2" and was down to 94, but four years later I'm actually up to 125 and I love it--I finally fill out my clothing and spill out of my bra. When going on the gluten free diet I was so emaciated and malnourished that I couldn't really eat fatty foods, but I started introducing them slowly so they wouldn't make me sick. I eat tons of avocados (high in fat but healthy), lean red meat (I hadn't eaten that for nearly 6 years because docs thought it was too rich for my delicate digestive system), and a good share of dark chocolate. When gaining weight, I did no exercise at all, but now it's time to get back in the swing of things because I've used weight gain as an excuse not to workout but my weight has been stable for over a year and a half--guess now my only excuse is that I'm too lazy to get off my now-nicely-padded behind!

This is obviously a big concern for everyone ... just look at the number of people who have read this!!

A year ago, you could see my ribs on my back, you still can a little. I only got down to 121 pounds (5'8") from 135, which I know is not low compared to many, but I have lifted weights for quite some time now, so I think that helped me not go lower. Also, the weights made my chest at least have some muscle definition even if the cleavage was more like a guys!

I have maintained 128 for a couple months, and even my teenage daughter has noticed my chest is returning somewhat. So, it seems as if even after I gained the weight, it is taking some time to distribute where I want it! Who knows if they'll get back to where they were ... I do think it's a matter of overall body weight. I liked the comment about skinny women having flat chests and fat women having large chests is just fair. That's probably true. Most men don't care if they're big or small; my husband says "sexy is an attitude."

I'm doing several of the same things and they are working too. I weighed myself and I'm up to 109lbs from 98lbs.

I can't eat avocados (they will bring on a celiac disease seizure) I'm allergic to laytex along with it are avocados too. But BANANAS are the thing that helps those with celiac disease gain weight. I found some old medical articles written by doctors about 'banana babies' and their treatment of celiac disease. Bananas lots of bananas are in my diet I drink 3 or 4 banana smoothies I make with frozen raspberries and blackberries.

I have been seeing my chiropractor 2 times a week he is resetting my digestion system.

I extremely limited as to what I can eat with all these seconary food allergies. However, I eat a large meal for breakfast. Dinner for breakfast. Chicken, burger, shrimps (protein), veggies streamed. Things like baked carrots and zuchinni. I eat 3 meals a day and consume and a good share of dark chocolate also. Dark chocolate is good for you - if you can find it dairy and soy free.

And I’m anaemic, however I’m also female and vegetarian. I had an iron trans a couple of years ago however it’s starting to dwindle and taking supplements doesn’t seem to work. I can’t seem to absorb it.

Hi, I attended a neurologist appt last Tuesday, which I nearly cancelled, due to ongoing numbness and tingling in toes to mid foot. One of the first things he asked was ‘are you celiac’. I’m not. He thought all reflexes were ok but at the last minute decided on nerve conduction tests which were low normal. He was a little confused as he felt they should be better and tried a new set of probs, all the time, giving me multiple shocks which were not enjoyable lol. Anyway, he’s now ordered tests for myeloma, and all the vitaminy things that so many of you mention on here, also tests looking for autoimmune responses. I already have Hashimotos. Interestingly, to me, but maybe someone out there can relate or knows more than i do, although I was a nurse, but ED not ‘weird symptoms’  nurse. Anyway back to the interesting thing, I took duramine in 2013 to lose weight which caused a massive panic attack when I stopped taking it and half my hair fell out. I only took it for a week but it was horrible and I regret it. It triggered ongoing panic attacks which are horrendous. So I feel like I’m a bit crazy. Then in 2020 I had this sudden onset of horrible pain when trying to eat a cinnamon roll. It continued and I lost around 20 kgs. I had two gastroscopes and a colonoscopy and they were all normal. I scored a barium swallow and CT angiogram. All normal. The pain subsided a little but I was left with reflux and an awful feeling that I couldn’t get air when I ate some foods. This was not anxiety.  The anxiety was separate and I still maintain this. This was something to do with eating. It was like the air was thick but I wasn’t short of breath. I just had the sensation I was, then it triggered anxiety. Anyway, I had other weird things- couldn’t bend knees to shave legs in shower lol. Knees felt stiff and swollen but they weren’t. Knee WOUld swell up randomly but mri showed minimal issues. A bit of a meniscus degeneration but insignificant. Then the buzzing sensations in my head, the feeling like someone was stabbing me with something sharp. So now, I pre empted his tests, although I don’t think I’m celiac because it should have come up on gastroscopy, I’ve gone off gluten. Since Tuesday last week so 9 days. Since then I don’t appear to be as constipated, I realised I got through today without a nap and I’m not tired, maybe it’s just today and not related but I get very tired normally and sleep straight after work often, I can bend my knees and shave my legs lol, the buzzing vibrating has gone from my head, I had to call and ambulance as my heart decided we were off on a run, but we weren’t running and I’ve been a bit twitchy at bed time when trying to sleep, reflux is improving, I did get the weird suffocating feeling a bit when eating today but not as bad normall. Tingling and numbness still present and I felt like it moved up my legs a bit today but I’m a bit jittery. So I don’t know if it’s celiac disease or a gluten intolerance but I think, and it may be wishful thinking because my symptoms do make life a bit challenging, but maybe I’m feeling better. I don’t feel as cloudy. My thinking feels crisper. Like there’s no buzzing and I’m not fighting to break through the cloudiness now. I hope so much that this may help me feel a bit better moving forward. It would be a miracle as I really have struggled to work and parent and keep the house clean and I’m always anxious and exhausted.  If you get this far, please tell me if you you can relate to any of the above. Oh and tonsils out 5 years ago but before that antibiotics multiple times a year, sometimes intramuscular because they were so bad.  Op was meant to take 30 mins, it took 1.5 hours due to size of them.

Im still not gaining weight I’m on a gluten free diet . And still having issues with constapation started priobiocs figured it would help been over two weeks . I guess it’s going to be a long road for me .
    • Smith-Ronald
Enlarged lymph nodes in neck and groin with celiac are not uncommon. They can take time to reduce even after going gluten-free. Monitoring is key.
    • Bayb
Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?
