Muscle/joint Pain When Glutened

Having been almost asymptomatic before I was diagnosed, after several months gluten-free I've now realised that the main symptom for me when I get hit is horrendous joint pain and stiffness, particularly in my neck (causing headaches) and across my back and shoulders. At it's worst this area is so stiff my arms shudder when I move them. I got glutened ten days ago and while the really bad pain only lasts half a day or so I still have a headache and sore neck/back. Does anyone have any tips for dealing with/reducing this soreness?

Anti inflammatories and alternating cold/hot packs.  That's pretty much all you can do.

Good Luck.

I get that too. I turn into an old lady.

Yep, anti-inflammatories and sleep.

I'm thinking this is happening to me.  Back in college and off and on up until about 10 years ago, I would get cysts in my wrist from overuse.  I haven't really had issues at all in the past 10 years until about 3 months ago.  It's not the same type of pain as the cyst but it's in the same general location.  It was really bothering me about 3 weeks ago to the point I put a splint on it because it hurt to use.  Then, as I cut down on the gluten, not totally gluten-free yet though, the pain went away.  I went on a gluten spree the other day, the pain is back.  Now, today, it's not as bad.  Hard to say I guess but possible.

I know for sore muscles and neck pain I take very hot or  safe enough hot for you to be comfortable bath's with a bath soak of sorts. I use the Hugo's eucalyptus  formula as it is very comforting. Also those heated rice pillow scented with lavender. filled pillows are nice for around the neck.  As for headaches try one of those heated masks for at home the ones you can chill or heat up, pending  the need. But those I find help for aches and such.

Unfortunately not much. I'm writing to say that it happens to me as well; very stiff neck/shoulders together with intestinal distress, particularly on the left side, with awful jaw stiffness and tension headaches around my teeth and my lfet eye (right side achey too but not the same way). I've had massages, physioterapy aimed at the jaw, and both help. best things are muscle relaxing drugs. Unfortunately it is not stuff you can use for a long time. I took some Flexiban (italian commercial name) which in structure is similar to an anti depressive drug, and it works on the central nervous system. I was told to take it 5 night on, 5 off, then again 5 on and then STOP. It did help during a difficult period.

Otherwise: yoga, massages, sleep. Working with a stiff neck is not nice but being on holiday for a week with a constant tension headache for 4 days because (if I am right) a restaurant glutened me (ever so slightly...) is no fun party either.

Alesusy it sounds rather like you're describing my glutenings! Just feels like everything is locking up. I also get jaw pain - I tend to grind my teeth in my sleep when I'm stressed and I think this is the same thing. I'm planning to get fitted with a night time gum guard (attractive! Haha) when I can afford it, my mum finds them really useful.

I'll consider the drugs too, especially when I'm working full time next year. And I'll tell my boyfriend that massages are a medical necessity! Hehe. Thanks.

I like a more natural approach, so rather than anti-inflammatories.  A cup of organic turmeric ginger tea from "The Republic of Tea" with a bit of honey added.  Works as good, if not better than 2 advil.

Also, I am no stranger to neck pain.  I herniated a disc in my neck a couple of years ago (horrible) and my neck has never been quite the same since, so I understand the headaches and neck tension that you are talking about.  Moist heat works great.  I ordered this neck wrap that you can put in the microwave.  It feels so good and works great for loosening up that tension.  I even took it on a long car trip once and was putting in the microwave in gas stations and rest stops just to keep my neck in check with a long drive.

Welcome to the forum, @SuzanneL! Which tTG was that? tTG-IGA? tTG-IGG? Were there other celiac antibody tests run from that blood draw? Was total IGA measured? By some chance were you already cutting back on gluten by the time the blood draw was taken or just not eating much? For the celiac antibody tests to be accurate a person needs to be eating about 10g of gluten daily which is about 4-6 pieces of bread.

I've recently received a weak positive tTG, 6. For about six years, I've been sick almost everyday. I was told it was just my IBS. I have constant nausea. Sometimes after I eat, I have sharp, upper pain in my abdomen. I sometimes feel or vomit (bile) after eating. The doctor wanted me to try a stronger anti acid before doing an endoscopy. I'm just curious if these symptoms are pointing towards Celiac Disease?

I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. It must be really frustrating and uncomfortable. Have you talked to your healthcare provider about these sudden sweating episodes? It might be helpful to discuss this with them to rule out any other underlying issues or to see if there are specific strategies or treatments that can help manage this symptom. Additionally, staying hydrated and wearing breathable clothing may provide some relief.
