I posted a thread a couple of days ago about my boyfriend, who was battling a nasty cold. He started feeling sick on Saturday. I ended up staying over until Monday night, and left Tuesday morning.

 

During this time, we spent a lot of time cuddling and watching movies, and we had to share a bed (we used different blankets) obviously I did not kiss him during this time. 

 

I just wanted to announce that I somehow did not catch his cold, and to me that is a huge deal...as for awhile I was getting sick ALL the time. I wasn't sure if my immune system would be able to handle this or not, I was very paranoid about getting sick, but I didn't want to leave him. (He has vasovagal episodes sometimes, and he blacked out Saturday night and didn't tell me until Sunday morning, so of course I was paranoid about leaving him while he wasn't feeling well...)

 

I don't know if it's because I'm on a very strict healing diet, and I'm only eating really healthy food or what, but regardless, I am super pleased that I was able to be a good girlfriend and take care of him, while not getting sick myself.

Excellent news! And I expect you're right in thinking it's because you are getting healthier on the gluten-free diet. I actually got a cold about a month ago. The first one in TWO YEARS! Whenever it feels like living gluten-free is hard, just remember that it also makes our lives SO much easier. :)

Wow! That is awesome, no cold in two years? I guess it'll just keep getting better then ey? 

 

Last October (right on Halloween, actually) I got very, very ill while at work. I went to the doctor the next day and I found out I had severe bronchitis that was on the verge of pneumonia. The weirdest part? I got sick a couple of days after a glutening. I ate a decent sized chunk of a loaf of bread that I was hoping was gluten free. It wasn't! I'm not sure if this weakened my immune system or what, but I was VERY, very sick. I had only been gluten free for a couple of months. I'm trying not to count my chickens before they hatch, so to speak, but it does feel like I have improved so much since last year. It's amazing! 

 

As for living gluten free, I think it would be much, much easier if cross contamination wasn't such a big issue. My boyfriend does not eat gluten free and I don't want to make him. He bought a house recently and I want to move in with him, but not before we get everything settled in the kitchen. He complains that we don't have the room to buy separate stuff, but I am keeping my foot down. HE has a choice. I do not. If he wants to keep eating gluten, then we need some separate stuff. Period. If he could give up gluten in the house and only eat it at restaurants, work, etc...I would be so happy! It would make everything so much easier. But it has to be his decision.

I wish I could celebrate with some chocolate! Or some hummus! 

 

But instead, I will say that I had the best salad I've had in a long time for dinner. I can't have regular vinegars, so I've just been avoiding salads all together. All commercial brands either have vinegar, soy, or gluten - or all 3. -_- I can have apple cider vinegar, but it doesn't smell very good...so I never thought to make a salad dressing with it. I did tonight, though, and it was great! I mixed the ACV (Bragg's) with olive oil, cracked pepper and sea salt and it was fantastic! I had plain romaine and cucumbers and dipped them in the dressing. It was so good.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay for victories! Oh sure you can use ACV for salad dressings. It's better than not having any dressing. Your salad sounds delicious. Great that you didn't get sick. Keep eating salads like that & you'll get even healthier. How about making a Chef's salad with the same dressing you used? Yummy!

It is soooo good! What is in a typical chef's salad? It has meat usually, right? I'm odd - I don't like meat except for grilled chicken...and turkey sometimes. I would love to add cheese to it, but my diet is super strict..no cheese right now :'(  (Dairy free and low histamine version of the SCD diet) 

 

Ideally, I would add chickpeas, tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and cottage cheese. Maybe grilled chicken...but I usually eat that with grilled vegetables.

 

Sigh. Someday!

Hi De Ho...

Saw your post...fantastic...and I must add...

I have had virtually NO cold or flu bugs since I was diagnosed with celiac disease five and a half years ago. I have had many autoimmune flares that can feel worse than the worst flu....yet, knowing I wasn't catching every bug flying by....was and is comforting.

Yay for not catching bugs :)

I'm sorry, when I suggested that I forgot you aren't doing cheese. For future, here's a recipe for chef's salad.

I throw in bell pepper & anything else I have a mind to. Personally I always have a vinegar & oil dressing on chef's salads.

GottaSki - That's great! I was really happy that I managed to stay over and take care of him and somehow not end up sick too. I didn't take any medications, either. I have had at least 2 nasty bugs since getting diagnosed with celiac disease. The first one was actually around Halloween of last year (after 4 months of being diagnosed) I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I started getting sick right after getting glutened. I went to the doctor, and found out I had severe bronchitis that was transforming into pneumonia. The second time, I got a nasty cold from my sister. That was in early July of this year, over a year after being gluten free...BUT, I had just gotten back from vacation with my boyfriend and I had eaten terribly that week. (I ate gluten free, but I also had a lot of dairy that week...and even though I tried to be careful with soy, I forgot to check the meal I had at Margaritaville - it was cooked in soy oil. I think soy oil is fine for people with soy allergies, but I still try to avoid it 100%. I didn't get sick from the soy, but still) I also did not pay any attention to histamine levels in food. 

 

So I definitely figured I needed to give credit to this new strict diet I'm on for me not catching his cold. I feel like my immune system is finally getting stronger. It has only been about 3 months since I have gotten sick, but I feel line in any normal circumstances I would have caught his cold. There were a few moments where I started to feel sick, but then it went away on its own quickly...without any medication. I'm so proud of my immune system :') Lol!

 

squirmingitch - No worries! My diet is insanely strict, I can't expect anyone to remember all of my current restrictions. I plan on staying on it for at least 3 months (I read somewhere that if you go grain free you should do it for at least 3 months) and we'll see how it goes. I would love to be more creative with my salads (and food in general) but I want to get better. My boyfriend was so worried at first, thinking that I was eliminating food for no reason...until he saw how after 3 days of eliminating legumes it looked like I dropped significant weight. No....the bloating just went down. I think that was what made him realize I'm not doing this to starve myself, I am trying to heal. 

 

What kind of dressing do you use? I can't have "regular" vinegar (Balsamic, etc) so for the longest time I didn't eat salads. I used to order a grilled chicken salad from a restaurant near where I worked...I would squeeze lemon juice on it and top it with olive oil. It was really good, but I had to stop ordering it because I didn't know what seasonings they used on the chicken, or if they were careful about CC. After that, I stopped eating salads. Lemon and olive oil didn't really taste right on any other salad. ACV doesn't give me any symptoms like other vinegar does, and it tastes even better! It is also the only vinegar that apparently fights candida instead of feeding it. Woohoo!

      Still dealing with this rash on my legs. I've eliminated ringworm (through use of topical ointments). And I also know it's not shingles, as I've never had chickenpox before and I'm still fairly young. Through a lot of online research, I'm leaning more towards dermatitis herpetiformis, eczema, or psoriasis. I've actually got a doctor's appointment in May (finally got some insurance) and I'm going to bring it up then. I'm feeling really hopeful and excited to maybe be getting some relief soon.   Big thanks to everyone for the suggestions and positive thoughts!

      You have three celiac disease specific antibody tests that are positive: Endomysial  Antibody IGA (aka, EMA), tTG-IGA, and tTG_IGG. Furthermore, your Immunoglobulin A at 55 is low, meaning you are IGA deficient. This one is not an antibody test for celaic disease per se but a measure of "total IGA" levels and if low (yours is low) it can suppress the individual antibody scores and even cause false negatives. So, yes, it definitely looks like you have celiac disease.   Do not yet begin a gluten free diet as your physician may refer you to a GI doc for an endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel lining for confirmation of the antibody testing. This may help:

      Mine is definitely triggered by inflammation and stress! I do also have arthritis in my spine, but the pain is more in my pelvic area. Im sure i have other food intolerances or other autoimmune isues but the more I focus on it and see doctor after doctor, it just gets worse.  Best thing is get of Gluten! (I also avoid lactose). Try to limit stress and anything that causes inflammation in your body.

      Good morning,   I got an email about replies to this post. Some of my doctors had blamed a slipped disc for the pain I had and that contributes, but after meeting with a gastroenterologist AGAIN and trying some lifestyle modifications, I found out I have IBS and can't tolerate corn or excessive fructose to any degree. Cutting out corn AFTER having cut out all gluten containing products was a real pain but I feel much better now!
