Apples, Really That Is Weird.

Ever since I knew I had Celiac's disease I have not cheated once, accidentally gluten a few times but I've been an real good girl. All that being said, some posts ago I had a trip to the er where they performed gall bladder removal surgery, and things got interesting. I was relieved the hospital did know a bit on celiacs unlike the horrid clinic visit I had sometime around July/august. Dr.'s orders was placing me on a all grain free diet, recommending a paleo based diet. I am not happy because I was a vegan until that noise went down. Now last night I am eating my dinner at my desk, a salad that had red fuiji apples on it and as time marched on I started to feel sick,tightness in my stomach from bloating, nausea, pain in my joints. Now I know dag on well I had no gluten in the past month, we won't allow it in our house, as I am still so new and trying to heal we don't want any cc' accidents but they do happen, but mostly if I eat outside the house from unknown restaurant.

So why when I journal everything both via mobile app, and paper journal(incase phone breaks and I do not have a current backup of data) and I know there was no chance of it being gluten unless something came in contact weirdly with the apple, or some sort of wax preserving, but the store we buy from touts they use pesticide free harvested foods. Has anyone else had apples make them so sick it mimicked being glutened?

On a side note despite my harping and anger that I am not a vegan right now, I have actually had to learn how to cook other things thanks to the internet. Granted i am not eating rice with everything which was highly irritating. So I guess thats a silver lining. Also a question on Kombucha anyone who has had symptoms of being ill from gluten or other connected irritants feel relief nearly right away after drinking it? I've read some places it has helped people but again as most here are very knowledgeable I would like to hear some insight on that here.

When I first started I couldn't eat salad greens or sweet potatoes. There was no good reason. To this day I still get almost instant gluten-like symptoms from blueberries. Once again, I can think of no good reason except maybe Murphy's Law because blueberries are my favorite fruit. I got the greens and sweet potatoes back and am hoping someday I'll have my blueberries back too.

 

In the meantime, try not to overthink it. I was convinced that there was something else wrong but it turned out to be that I just needed more time to heal. Another time apples might be just fine for you or some other random food might give you trouble.

 

One thing I've learned about celiac is there is no logic to the other food sensitivities that may come along with it. We just need to roll with the punches and try again later.

I've noticed,there is never a dull moment, and two your baking and cooking skills become awesome over time. This is coming from a woman who lives in the server room in IT that boasted, I can fix your xbox, cellphone and computer but do not ask me to cook for the love of god. In a way its a good thing to know how as your not getting the franked crap that is not good for folks. Few weeks ago before I had to learn more about kitchens someone cracked a joke about me that if I had kids they could see me as the stereotypical soccer mommy. This stuff is making that assumption a little eerily prophetic lol.

Certain apples have always given me stomach cramps.  I can eat Honeycrisp and Regent apples without issue but some of the other apples are just to acidic or something for my stomach.

I do not believe that at the time that showed positive. But I am gonna get a second opinion on that one.

Are you certain that your salad dressing was gluten free?  It's a often-forgotten culprit.

Raw apples and pears get me too. A really raw pain is usually the result.

 

Some of the long time members of this board helped me figure out that one a year or two ago.

I don't have celiac, but I am gluten intolerant and have an auto immune disease.  About six months ago, I became inexplicably allergic to apples. Red itching swollen eyes, sneezing just from cutting them. Don't ask about when I ate them. Because I am stubborn, kept trying to make it work... thinking it was the wax etc. My doctor told me in the absence of something to fight... i.e. gluten or perhaps in your case other grains, sometimes your immune systems picks a new target.  I am trying to reintroduce apples now, so far I can handle applesauce and a juice blend, but nothing stronger. Good luck!

i have done better with raw fruits and veggies with the help of digestive enzymes - in fact, i experimented with the right combination/timing of probiotics and digestive enzymes until i have it adjusted just right <for me, everyone is different.   and this also might change as i continue to heal (yes, things are *still* improving!)

 

for example:  i take culturelle at night before bed, and otc walgreen's probiotic/digestive enzyme combo in the morning.  no extra enzyme with breakfast, but just plain otc (cvs) digestive enzyme with every subsequent meal or big snack.  i had to experiment quite a bit, though, and even stumbled across the walgreen's combo when i forgot my regular enzyme capsules when i was out of town, lolz  :)

Yes, I have a problem with apples.  Last year, I could eat them just fine.  I have been on the FodMap diet as suggested by doc for quite awhile now.  I tried apples as my challenge food a month ago.  I started with just half an apple at lunch and BAM!  I was sick for a full day.  It is now time to challenge it again, and I'm scared to death to do it.  I did take a very! small sip of fresh apple cider last night without ill effects.  Apples are very high in fructose - you may have a fructose malabsorption.  Your doctor can order a test for that.

Confirmed salad dressing had zero gluten in it, as there was no dressing. I honestly think it was the apples, as it is the only thing that makes since. Thanks to everyone for your help.

      Welcome to the forum community, @ekelsay! Yes, your tTG-IGA score is strongly positive for celiac disease. There are other antibody tests that can be run when diagnosing celiac disease but the tTG-IGA is the most popular with physicians because it combines good sensitivity with good specificity, and it is a relatively inexpensive test to perform. The onset of celiac disease can happen at any stage of life and the size of the score is not necessarily an indicator of the progress of the disease. It is likely that you you experienced onset well before you became aware of symptoms. It often takes 10 years or more to get a diagnosis of celiac disease after the first appearance of symptoms. In my case, the first indicator was mildly elevated liver enzymes that resulted in a rejection of my blood donation by the Red Cross at age 37. There was no GI discomfort at that point, at least none that I noticed. Over time, other lab values began to get out of norm, including decreased iron levels. My PCP was at a complete loss to explain any of this. I finally scheduled an appointment with a GI doc because the liver enzymes concerned me and he tested me right away for celiac disease. I was positive and within three months of gluten free eating my liver enzymes were back to normal. That took 13 years since the rejection of my blood donation by the Red Cross. And my story is typical. Toward the end of that period I had developed some occasional diarrhea and oily stool but no major GI distress. Many celiacs do not have classic GI symptoms and are "silent" celiacs. There are around 200 symptoms that have been associated with celiac disease and many or most of them do not involve conscious GI distress. Via an autoimmune process, gluten ingestion triggers inflammation in the villous lining of the small bowel which damages it over time and inhibits the ability of this organ to absorb the vitamins and minerals in the food we ingest. So, that explains why those with celiac disease often suffer iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis and a host of other vitamin and mineral deficiency related medical issues. The villous lining of the small bowel is where essentially all of our nutrition is absorbed. So, yes, anemia is one of the classic symptoms of celiac disease. One very important thing you need to be aware of is that your PCP may refer you to a GI doc for an endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel lining to confirm the results of the blood antibody testing. So, you must not begin gluten free eating until that is done or at least you know they are going to diagnose you with celiac disease without it. If you start gluten free eating now there will be healing in the villous lining that will begin to take place which may compromise the results of the biopsy.

      Hello all- my wife was recently diagnosed with Celiac below are her blood results. We are still absorbing this.  I wanted to seek clarity on few things:  1. Her symptoms aren't extreme. She was asked to go on gluten free diet a couple years ago but she did not completely cut off gluten. Partly because she wasn't seeing extreme symptoms. Only bloating and mild diarrhea after a meal full of gluten.  Does this mean that she is asymptomatic but enormous harm is done with every gram of gluten.? in other words is amount gluten directly correlated with harm on the intestines? or few mg of gluten can be really harmful to the villi  2. Why is she asymptomatic?  3. Is Gliadin X safe to take and effective for Cross -contamination or while going out to eat?  4. Since she is asymptomatic, can we sometimes indulge in a gluten diet? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deamidated Gliadin, IgG - 64 (0-19) units tTG IgA -  >100 (0-3) U/ml tTG IgG - 4   (0-5) Why is this in normal range?       Constantly! I don't want everything to cost as much as a KIND bar, as great as they are.  Happy most of the info is available to us to make smart decisions for our health, just need to do a little more research.

      Today, I received the results of my Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) Ab, IgA test. I am not sure how to interpret the results. I have left a message for the doctor that requested the test but have not heard back. The results stated that the normal range is from 0.00 - 4.99 FLU. My results came back at 92.08. Is this concerning? This seems extremely high for someone who has reached the age of 50 before finding out he has celiac disease.  The reason that I was administered the test in the first place is due to bloating issues that started about a year ago. I met with a Gastroenterologist and after a short question and answer session she wanted to test me for celiac disease and a bacteria test via the H. Pylori Breath Test. She seemed more concerned with the fact that I am a healthy male suffering from Anemia. Is it possible the anemia could be a result of celiac disease? I have been on an iron supplement for the better part of 5 years.
