Diagnosis?

Okay, so I am just now researching this, but three months ago my doctor diagnosed me with Celiac. I immediately went off gluten. Now I am questioning...

I don't have classic gut issues, except on very rare occasions. I mainly have hormone imbalances (estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid), severe migraine headaches, lots of pelvic pain, tiredness, etc. In a panel that tested for a lot of other things my doctor pointed out the following:

Gliadin Antibody, IgA - 19

Gliadin antibody,IgG - 54

Tissue Transglutaminase antibody, IgA - 36

tTG, IgG - 7

I also have insulin resistance, Lots of inflammation (Lp-PLA - 244, hs-CRP - 1.4), and low Iron (Ferritin - 10)

She didn't say anything about a biopsy, and at 3 months gluten-free, I don't suppose I could have a biopsy without a gluten challenge. Are the numbers high enough to be Celiac without a biopsy?

I just don't want to go down the road of thinking this is causing all my problems, only to discover no change and years down the road try to figure what really is the source.

She felt that the reason why I was having such hormonal issues was the Celiac was blocking my absorption of the hormones. This was also causing the insulin resistance. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks!

Yes,I think you are on the right track. Based on your lab results (helps to have the lab ranges as each lab varies though), I would say that you have Celiac Disease. I had the biopsy because only one of my celiac disease blood tests was positive. I was "on the fence". Plus, I was scheduled for a routine colonoscopy anyway......and I need a firm diagnosis as my husband has been gluten-free for thirteen years and I knew what it meant! I could not believe that we would both have it.

My insulin resistance did not improve on a gluten-free diet. It just got worse. I am a diabetic diagnosed a year after my celiac disease diagnosis (type not determined). I suggest you do some research on diabetes. I was shocked! What give up more foods? But I bought a cheap meter right away and began testing. Yep, I had issues with carbs. I took all my data into my doctor who agreed that I had diabetes. I went on a LCHF diet that keeps my meter readings in a safe zone. My doctor is even more impressed with my cholesterol results (increase my HDL that was way too low). We are continuing our "clinical study" on my husband who does not have an insulin resistance problem but has high cholesterol and could stand to lose some weight.

I am hoping that when I need diabetes meds (Metformin) my gut will be healed as most wreak havoic on your gut and mine is already damaged.

I, too hoped that my insulin resistance was related to celiac disease, but it appears that it is not.

Carpool time!

I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. It must be really frustrating and uncomfortable. Have you talked to your healthcare provider about these sudden sweating episodes? It might be helpful to discuss this with them to rule out any other underlying issues or to see if there are specific strategies or treatments that can help manage this symptom. Additionally, staying hydrated and wearing breathable clothing may provide some relief.

I am not sure where you are going, but we have articles in this section which may be helpful: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/gluten-free-travel/

There are supplements available that can help breakdown minor amounts of gluten such as you might experience with cross contamination when dining out and you order gluten free items from a menu. But they will not help when larger amounts of gluten are consumed. One such product that many on this forum attest to as having helped them in this regard is GliadinX. The inventor of GlidinX is one our forum sponsors so you should know that.

There is such a thing, believe it or not, called gluten withdrawal. Gluten has addictive properties similar to opiates. I know it sounds bizarre but research it. Also, are you compensating for the loss of vitamins and minerals you were getting from the FDA mandated fortified wheat flour products you were formerly consuming?
