Help!!!

Last Night,

I Broke Out In The Most Horrendous, Most Severe Hives I've Ever Had Last Night!!! Absolutely no sleep, just constant itching. :(

I was diagnosed with hives about 2 1/2 weeks ago after accidently eating a large amount of soy sauce which I believed was gluten free from my favorite restaurant.
No need to mention, I'll never, ever go back.

I never had hives before, I did have some slight itching since the time I was diagnosed, but never like this, I always attributed it to stress, not celiac disease.

2 Dermatologists that I have seen think I have hives that is directly related to my Celiac disease. So to say the least, I have been extremely careful, looking up absolutely everything, before it goes into my mind. And I refuse to eat at a restaurant ever again, I just don't trust it.

I know it had to be something I accidently ingested, despite being extremely careful.

So, I have gone over everything over and over again in my head that might have caused this reaction, and the only thing that I ate that I think might have caused this reaction is this bar I found at Whole Foods, called the KIND Fruit and Nut Bar from PeaceWorks Inc. I got the Almond and Coconut bar. It states on the package that it is dairy free, however doesn't state boldly that it is gluten free.

The ingredients though seem safe: they are almonds, coconut, honey, glucose, puffed rice, humectant (gycerol Vegetable based), chicory fiber, lecithin (from Soy). And It states nothing about being processed in a wheat factory.

The only ingredient I am questioning is the "chickory fiber", has anyone ever heard of Celiac's having a problem with "chickory fiber??".

I have been off of dairy for about 3 to 4 days right now, however I don't think I'm allergic to dairy, I have never had any problems with dairy before. I just wanted to go without it for about a week to see if some my skin problems would improve, however, it's only been about 3 days that I've been off the dairy. Not to mention this bar doesn't contain dairy.

I'VE BEEN GOING OUT OF MY MIND- trying to figure out what caused my hives last night, I didn't sleep at all, and am sooooooooo tired, so I know i ingested something I wasn't suppossed to but What??, I have not clue.

If anyone can shed light on this mystery, I'd love the feedback. Also has anyone tried one of these KIND BARS from Peaceworks Inc, and had a reaction, or know if oats are in them??

Just wondering,
Thanks so much for listening
Kim

I'm sorry that you are going through this. Like you, I also get a skin reaction when I get gluten in my system. I know all too what it is like to get gluten sick and have no idea what I did wrong. It probably doesn't help living in a house where everyone else eats gluten ;) I've never had that bar before and the ingredients on the bar look ok, but if it was processed on the same line as something with gluten in it, then that would probably make you sick. Just make sure that you re-evalute everything and totally eliminate any suspicious foods or products, even if a source says it's gluten free, or if there is a chance of cross-contamination. I hope this helps :)

My rec is to NOT eat those bars. I had one a long time ago b/c I thought they were okay--and the company told me twice that ALL of their bars were gluten-free. Well, they were smokin' something :) because several of the bars have wheat in them. If you go back to the store, read their labels and you will see several of them have it. I recommend not eating them simply b/c they were clueless about their products when I talked to them...and I find it hard to put it trust in them, especially since many of the bars are definitely not gluten-free. Who knows what their production/allergy procedures are...

So, those bars may have caused your reaction. Did you switch any food, meds or products or start anything new recently?

I know hives are MISERABLE!!! So I hope they go away soon. !!
