Lab Results Are In. Please Help Me Understand Them.

The one I have questions with are the EMA IgG my results were <1:10 reference range says <1:10. Is this a positive or negative? All other tests were neg. the lab sent the wrong sample for the HLA-DQ2&8 so I don't have those results.

Thank goodness. Now I don't have to worry about my children getting celiac. My GI Dr thinks I have a gluten intolerance. But doesn't think that it is celiac. On my biopsy I was only Marsh I.

Did you have any other positive tests?  The EMA IgA is not positive for all celiacs.  It tends to show more advanced cases of the disease.  Those with early celiac may have a positive tTG IgA or DGP test, but the EMA could be negative.  This theory would also support the fact that you have Marsh 1 damage which is often considered early damage.  Marsh 0 is normal.  Marsh 1 is not.

 

A gluten intolerance will not cause ANY intestinal damage.  Marsh 0.  A Marsh 1 means something could be wrong.  A Marsh 1 with any positive celiac disease tests probably means celiac disease.

 

You might want to test again in a couple of years if you resume eating gluten.  If it is celiac disease, your damage may be advanced enough by then to get a diagnosis... the diagnostic system of celiac disease is a bit barbaric.  :(

Even if you are negative that doesn't mean that you children will never get celiac. You haven't got your genes test back yet. If their father hasn't had his genes tested then you don't know whether he carrys the gene either. People only need one celiac associated gene to get celiac and it can come from either parent.

 With Marsh 1 you could still be celiac. If you haven't had the full panel then you should get the tests Nicole suggested. 

Are you having symptoms? If so when you have finished all your celiac related tests you could give the diet a try and see if it helps. The doctor could then rescope after 6 months or so and see if you have healed.

      Constant low back, abdominal and pelvic pain!

      I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any...
