Egg sensitivity and Flu Vaccine?

I haven't seen my gastroenterologist for a few years.  I was diagnosed celiac and have been gluten free for more than 5 years.  I've been having trouble again for the past 6 months or so.  I've done a full elimination diet and have come up with the culprit - eggs!   I did a search of the forum here and have found it's not uncommon for people with celiac to develop a sensitivity to eggs.

I can forego eating eating eggs but It's getting to be flu season.  I was planning on getting my flu shot today, as usual, at work.  The pre-shot questionnaire asks if I have an allergy to eggs.  As, I have never been tested, I don't know if this is really an "allergy".   I asked the nurse about it.  She said that if I do have an allergy to eggs,  it could be dangerous to get the vaccine.   So, I didn't ended up not getting the vaccine.  Anyone else in this boat.   Has anyone actually been tested for egg allergy?   Any advice as it pertains to the flu vaccine?

You would know if it was an allergy vs. an intolerance.

There are no contraindications for the flu shot with egg allergies.  That nurse was misinformed.  I was at a conference last week and this specifically came up- there is NO reason someone with allergies can't get anything (besides the Yellow Fever vaccine).

I've just had my flu jab. I had two doctors (GPs) in attendance - one was inputting data on the computer, another was asking all the questions.  I am living in Britain so it could be that things are a bit different here but aside the normal questions, "Have you had a flu jab before?" and "Why are you having this?" (I've just discovered that coeliacs in the UK are eligible for a free injection) the last question was, "Do you have an allergy to eggs?"   I nearly answered "No, but someone on a forum I read has just asked the same question so can you explain why it might be a problem?" but I thought better of it as they seeemed to be in a bit of a hurry!

So I looked this up.

Not sure if this helps but it does eems there is a special vaccine that might be available if there is any doubt.

The flu shot can very from year to year and perhaps it's different over The Pond.

I'm pretty sure that in stores, you can find plenty of gluten-free options. But they are usually a bit more expensive.

Hello @BunnyBrown and welcome to the forum. I cannot say that I have had the procedure you describe, but recently I did have general surgery and was routinely intubated.  That pain was what troubled me most after the operation, far more than the operation site.  It took a few days to really settle down, I was quite badly bruised. It was taking so long I was a bit concerned so asked the question on another forum. A few patients came back to me and said they had suffered the same.  I imagine in my own case possibly the throat got bashed about a bit,  maybe they had difficult inserting the tube?  I've suffered with a painful throat post-endoscopy too, but never as long as the intubation pain.   I hope you will be feeling better very soon.   PS BTW - love the name!  I saw this today in an Easter display in a shop and your name reminded me of it.🙂

This wonderful, Anne. I think you have a point about why people disappear off forums.  I found the first few years post diagnosis a real struggle and frankly wondered if I would ever feel better (not to dishearten people, but just to say it can take a while longer for some folk to heal).  However, once my antibodies were back within normal range it really has made a big difference to my health.  I've chosen to stick around because I'm a Mod, otherwise I might have been one of those that disappeared, too!
