Does anyone here suffer mainly from constipation. Not to go into great detail, but soft stools that move slow through the gi tract. Along with of course the bloating.

If I have been on the diet a few months should these symptoms started to improve or could it take longer. And does being gluten free even really help much with constipation?

I suffered from constipation for a year now. First I was diagnosed with IBS-C and given Zelnorm to relieve my constipation. I been gluten-free for 3 months now and my bm patterns are still the same. I will go for a few weeks "normal" then the next few weeks I'll have episodes where I will be constipated and wont go for 3-4 days at a time. The one thing that sometimes help is drinking coffe in the morning- but I am now lactose intolerant so it might have been the milk helping me go. Everyone is different, so going gluten-free might help you more than it helped me. Sorry couldnt give you a clear answer.

I'm also dealing with chronic constipation, the same as you. Tons of bloating...no fun. I also was diagnosed at first as IBS-C and given Zelnorm. It worked wonders (no C, no bloating, no gas) for a week and a half, and then it just flat out stopped working. So, my GI took me off of that and prescribed me Glycolax (Miralax). I have to take it 3 times a day for it to work, but it works for the most part. I know that sometimes a cup of coffee while sitting at the computer helps get things going.

Nonetheless, the pattern of my bm's have improved, but I don't know if any of that is from also being gluten-free...I'm too scared to stop taking the Glycolax! :unsure:

My GI did say the only thing he noticed during my colonoscopy was that I have an unusually long colon, which could also play a part in things. :huh:

I tried a sample Zelnorm a couple of weeks back and bloated up like I couldn't believe! It was horrible, and I felt like I was going to have the runs at any second for about 16 hours after I took it, then I finally went and it wasn't runs but cleaned out likely every crevice in my body. Then two days later I had the worst migraine and stomach upset for 24 hours without eating anything suspect. So I don't know, but coupled with the cost, I'm not going to fill the script. I do have 7 more samples, so I might give it a try again if nothing else works.

I don't ever go more than one day without going, but I do feel constipated from time to time. My best remedy is magnesium supplements, take 1000 mg at night and usually by lunch I will be going pretty well. :)

What brand of magnesium do you take? And what kind? Is it just plain magnesium?

Zelnorm is the pits in my opinion.

      Ugh!  Run from that doctor.  Are you located on Mars?  Kidding aside, here's the deal.  If you go gluten free just to test it out and you feel good, then you might think you have a gluten issue.   A few months or a year go by and you realize that this is HARD.  REALLY HARD.  So, you start to cheat.  You get sloppy.  You start sharing a toaster.  Your symptoms come back, but you don't worry about it or maybe you start to get violently ill.  Symptoms so different from your old symptoms that you think you must have something else.  (You could be the type of person who makes a decision and sticks with it.  But those are rare folks.)   I could go on with more stories, but type in lymphoma in our forum's search box.  Look at member's who were misdirected by their physicians and who have had celiac disease all along.  Now they are dealing with cancer.   It is not my intent to scare you into thinking you have cancer.  The odds of you having it are slim and none.  I am trying to scare you into finding another doctor who really CARES about you and follows a normal standard level of care (like reading currant medical journals or checking Dr. Google, like my ER neighbor doctor does because he can not know everything!) It's just a simple blood test.  So easy.  If negative, then give the diet a try!

      Well, you are no longer anemic, so that's great!  As long as you are healed, you should be able to absorb iron easily.   Of course, there could be other issues that would prevent you from absorbing iron as villi damage can occur from many things other than celiac disease.   Want to know for sure where you stand?  Ask your doctor to check your iron and iron store levels the next time you have a physical.

      That's a bummer!  I just bought some Crunchmaster gluten-free Rice Crackers at Costco (Toasted Sesame and Artisan Four Cheese) for my hubby.  There is no soy in those.  Of course, there's garlic and onion....which is not good for me but you might like them.  I am sure they are also available at many other retailers (Just not a large box with a relatively cheap price).

      Does celiac disease still prevent the absorption of iron if you are on a gluten-free diet?  Since my MCHC blood levels are low, I was wondering if it is because I will always have a problem absrobing iron due to celiace disease. I had to take iron supplements in the past or that is when I found out I had celiac disease. But I have been off the iron supplements for a cuple years now and my hemoglobin in blood is normal at 12.

      Hello! I am new to this Celiac website... Is there anyone out there with Celiac AND extensive food allergies? My allergies include shellfish, dairy, eggs, cantaloupe, kiwi, mango, nuts, oranges, red dye, and more I can't think of. I went to the allergist about a year ago to see why I wasn't feeling well, and once everything was eliminated, I still didn't feel well. We did more testing to find out I had celiac as well as allergies to cattle as well as rye grass (I live on a farm basically). This was back in January 2016. I recently had my endoscopy with the gastroenterologist a week ago. I have no idea what to do or what to eat... So fish and potatoes for me!
