Hi,

This is my first time here. I hope this is the correct place to post this. Sorry if it's not.

I have recently been diagnosed with Celiac disease. I am 25 and live in Australia. For most of my life I have been sick. I catch everything going under the sun. Someone could sneeze at one end of the office building and the next day I'd have caught the cold. I've also had stomach pains since I was a child. I was sent to doctor after doctor and poked and proded and no one could tell me what was wrong until recently. For the last few years I've been on antibiotics every month or so and a few months ago I was on my third lot of antibotics in a month when I was finally tested for celiac disease (which I had never heard of). It's now been 6 months and I haven't been sick or had to take any medication. It's unbelievable. I even have my energy back which has been missing. I had days where I could barely lift my arms above my head. Now youcan't stop me. It's made an amazing difference.

Here in Australia I don't think there is enough awareness made about celiac.

I'm still trialling different foods which has been difficult with gluten-free labeling not great over here.

For any other Australian members I have discovered the cadbury website has a list of their gluten free chocolate. thank goodness, I can't live without my chocolate fix. Also if you email Masterfoods they will send you a very detailed list of their gluten free products.

I hope this helps others.

If anyone has any information about foods, diet etc... I'd really appreciate it.

Is vegemite gluten-free? I suppose not, as its made by Kraft, and I didn't see it on the list. I'm on of those wierd people who likes it with kippers on toast. Its weird here at least.

I am also a recent diagnosy from Canada. There isn't a lot about in my neck of the woods either. Wish I lived in BC where they have tons more stuff for Celiac's.

And to round it all off nationally, I'm in Ottawa. I've also found that, at least in this part of Canada, there's very little variety in gluten-free foodstuffs. And the prices! Don't get me started! Anyone know where I can get a loaf of gluten-free bread for under five bucks?

I am Australian too, but living in the US. I had been to doctors in Oz and here, 26 years and two countries later I finally have an answer....I'm not a wierdo! Just wanted to say HI.

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it.

I went to a Christmas Party last night which is hard because trying to work out what I can eat and not does take some of the fun out of it. Anyway we each had to bring a plate of something to share with everyone and I found out there was another girl who also suffers from celias and she brought a gluten free cheesecake. Wow it was fantastic, exaclty like I remember normal cheesecake! I didn't realise how much I missed it until I tried it again. She's sending me the recipe which I'll post on here when I get it.
