does anyone here have joint pain especially in the shoulder? I accidently got glutened tonight and my shoulder is SO painful right now! It happened a lot before going gluten-free but I never really connected it before. i was just wondering if anyone had these same symptoms.

I have the same problem. At one point both shoulders were frozen. I went to a chiropractor for 6 months then did water aerobics. I also did yoga for a while until the studio closed on me.

I have definitely seen joint pain as being a celiac symptom on lists before. Personally, my whole back area, from my neck, my shoulders, and my hips and all in between completely tighten up. I even get some stabbing pain in my hips especially that will actually make me gasp out loud; like a twinge or a spasm. I don't experience it as joint or bone pain, more muscles/connective tissues.

My stepmom was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years before going gluten-free. She ended up figuring out that she shouldn't eat wheat on an elimination diet, but neither her or her doctor knew anything about celiac, so that possibility was never explored. After she cut wheat out of her diet, her fibromyalgia flares went away. And one of the first signs that she's eaten something she shouldn't is that her fibromyalgia flares up on her. She also read book about fibromyalgia that swears by a no-carb diet.

So I really believe that there is something to gluten = pain.

I get it all the time and I don't even have to get glutened for it to flare up...... I also get neck pain and pain in my elbow and knee joints..... I just chalk it up to getting old though.......

The pain I had in my right shoulder and hip have inproved with being gluten-free. The joint in my thumb sometimes gets red, painful and inflamed. That has not happened at all since gluten-free. The neck pain, while not as bad is still with me. Some days better than others. Hard to know what causes what sometimes!

That's another place I get it, I forgot!!! My right thumb joint flares up and hurts to put any pressure on it at all......

When my elbows are sore, they "give out" on me when I go to lean on them.....

I'm pretty sure that in stores, you can find plenty of gluten-free options. But they are usually a bit more expensive.

Hello @BunnyBrown and welcome to the forum. I cannot say that I have had the procedure you describe, but recently I did have general surgery and was routinely intubated.  That pain was what troubled me most after the operation, far more than the operation site.  It took a few days to really settle down, I was quite badly bruised. It was taking so long I was a bit concerned so asked the question on another forum. A few patients came back to me and said they had suffered the same.  I imagine in my own case possibly the throat got bashed about a bit,  maybe they had difficult inserting the tube?  I've suffered with a painful throat post-endoscopy too, but never as long as the intubation pain.   I hope you will be feeling better very soon.   PS BTW - love the name!  I saw this today in an Easter display in a shop and your name reminded me of it.🙂

This wonderful, Anne. I think you have a point about why people disappear off forums.  I found the first few years post diagnosis a real struggle and frankly wondered if I would ever feel better (not to dishearten people, but just to say it can take a while longer for some folk to heal).  However, once my antibodies were back within normal range it really has made a big difference to my health.  I've chosen to stick around because I'm a Mod, otherwise I might have been one of those that disappeared, too!
