I talked to a nutritionist about the DH, and she told me that there is something that deposits under the skin that causes it. For some reason it seems to get bad at first after going gluten free, then it gets better over time. I think she said it can take up to two years for the skin deposits to go away.

My personal experiences with DH were very mild looking. I use to get little bumps on my knees and elbows, and would itch on my scalp, and would also itch on my rump after sitting too long. My biggest problems were the feeling of “crawling skin,” and just painful skin. These problems made it very uncomfortable to be in cloths, and to sleep in bed sheets, plus there were times when I wanted to scream and tear my skin off. I’m sure glad these problems went away!

If you're actually swelling up it sounds like you might also be allergic to wheat.
