 I live in wheat country. My husband and my BIL have both asked me if wheat dust in the air might affect celiacs. Being new to this stuff, I am wondering too, since I am new to being celiac. I am think especially during wheat harvest.....can this have an adverse effect on me being a celiac?? Does anybody know? Marsha

The gluten particle is very small and it is certainly possible for a Celiac to get sick from the wheat dust flying around in the air. Last year I spoke with a woman who couldn't figure out why she was still having symptoms. It ended up that it was from the wheat dust from the hay when she was feeding her horses! She got a high quality dust mast to wear and started feeling much better.

I hope that is doesn't become a huge problem for you. It isn't like you could pack up and move just because you have Celiac! But if you remain symptomatic then it is probably the gluten you are inhaling. It is certainly enough to cause damage to your intestines. I would try to avoid going near the fields during the harvest.

God bless,

Mariann

I fully agree with Mariann. When I work on sanding paint, if I do not use a mask, I can taste the paint. It stands to reason that what dust settles in the mouth, WILL end up getting digested. I highly recommend buying a good mask with replaceable filters.

Also consider the dust that might settle in your kitchen area, and touching surfaces that are covered with wheat dust. You may want to wipe the counters with a damp cloth, and wash your hands before preparing yourself a meal.

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?

HI, my doctor suggested one week of consuming gluten before blood tests.  I have been gluten free for 3 years.  Has anyone been through this and will I get exact results after one week of consuming gluten?  I don't even know if I can do this, if I get sick I am not sure if I can continue, any suggestions??  Thanks in advance.
