Question For Jenvan

We will be eating a lucious prime rib dinner at the end of the month - it is a benefit auction for our Catholic School here in Montana. Anyway, we got the list of what will be served and it says buttered red potatoes and some kind of buttered vegetable mix along with the prime rib. She is staying away from dairy but do you think this will really hurt her? I understand she may get constipated from it, but other than that do you think it will hurt her. She will take her lactaid tablets with her. It would be so hard to go and not eat, and to pay the money for the meal and not eat. We are not worried about the meat, just the buttered items. They also serve cheesecake for dessert, but that she can skip with no problem. What would you do in this situation?

hey friend!! couple of thoughts on the situation. if it was me i would first see if i could call the facilities or caterer holding the banquet and verify the prime rib is safe (ck on marinades, how it is cooked) and then see if i could get plain, steamed veggies instead of the other food. if they are unwilling to help, then i would probably bring some of my own food or a tv dinner and ask them to heat it up for me. the question is--what would happen if bernadette did eat some dairy (if the meal is in fact gluten-free)? well, perhaps nothing...or maybe severe constipation again for several weeks. whether its 'hurting' her, that's a hard question to answer. severe constipation certainly isn't good for the body...as for what else dairy may be doing to her system...i honestly can't be sure. dairy reactions can vary from gas, GI distress to villous atrophy (as a few studies have found). and unfortunately lactaid can only help those with lactose intolerance..symptoms of gassiness etc...not with the other issues dairy can cause. for myself, one serving of dairy will start to reak havoc within a day and the effect can last for days. i wouldn't take a chance. i remember how miserable she was for so long...i wouldn't want her to go back to that even for a short period of time! ck with caterers and see what they say. i was in a wedding a few months ago and i brought a tv dinner for the banquet hall to warm up for me...they were happy to do it. let me know what you find and good luck! i know you will help her be safe... pls tell her i said hi! ps--if its going to be a longer evening, i might bring some cookies for my own dessert too :)

Agreed

Don't assume that Prime Rib is safe. -- Check the marinades and spices. Also, the "Au Jus" can have gluten in it if it is "instant" -- I got sick from that once.

Skip the veggies -- so not worth it...why get constipated over veggies???

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
