Newly Diagnosed At 13 - No Symptoms Except Short Stature

Nikki's mom Newbie

WOW!  I am in a very similar situation.  My daughter is 12 and the only symptom she has is short stature.  Ped says she is 2 years behind herself and bone age scan (the 1st one) said she might reach 5'2" (I'm 5'3").  2nd BAS said she may only reach 5' as her height is falling off the charts.  She's always been in the 5th percentile for her height and when born, she was in the NICU for 11 days with bad digestive disorders.  For a period of time, she wore the same size clothes for 2 years - hardly grew at all.  She is so upset to be so much shorter than her peers.  I mean, if she is going to be petite, then so be it.  The issue I have is that her growth has slowed down significantly.  Even though I'm shorter than most, I always kept growing a good clip and then just stopped at 5' 3.5" shortly after puberty.  She is not even keeping up with her predicted growth rates.  In fact, as I mentioned previously, she is falling off the height chart!  My younger daughter is of normal height and weight - no short stature at all.  They both eat mostly the same diet, though my oldest (the one with short stature) eats a significantly less amount of dairy purely by her preference.  She loves almond milk instead of cow's milk, etc. however this preference of hers just started in the past few months and has lost weight due to healthier eating.

She, too, was tested by ped endocrinologist and tested negative for celiac but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a sensitivity.  My daughter does not show the typical signs of celiac disease however she does have eczema and keratosis polaris.  These can be - not always - but can be side symptoms of a gluten intolerance or sensitivity.  Her pituitary hormones were checked as well and it came back "within normal range."

I'm going to discuss this with her when I get home and we're going to try changing her diet and seeing what happens.  I'm so relieved to know that there are others out there and I thank the original poster and all the followers for commenting.  It's nice to have a community of support out there.

Good luck to all and I'll repost in a few months with how she is doing.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
