New Book - Ultra Metabolism

I usually don't watch The View as I'm working but I had to eat lunch early today and I had the tv on while preparing lunch. Some Dr. was on pushing his book - Ultra Metabolism. He did not mention Celiac disease but he did say gluten in the course of talking about what our bodies were made to digest. Elizabeth (host) did not say she had Celiac either so that was disappointing. But hey - I'm sure the book talks about Celiac among other diseases that the food our society eats causes. I'm going to look for the book and skim through it to see if it's worth a read. I do not know the author's name but it is Dr. something.

I actually saw this, too. He kind of nodded to Elizabeth, and she to him when he mentioned gluten--but that was it. I was, however, angry that they had a doctor on that was very interesting and talking about how food can affect our health, and when he started talking about gluten, and actually said "one percent of the population is severly affected, and another 30 percent--" at that point Joy cut him off and said how everyone is allergic to wheat now, all her friends who go to a nutritionist are told they are allergic to wheat, blah, blah, blah. She cut him off and basicly acted as if wheat allergy was just a big fad. (I know there are people who feel that way, but here was a person, a doctor, who was trying to explain why) I was so dissapointed--I thought this was going to be a good discussion about nutrition, how food factors into health and inflammation. The women on the panel kept interrupting him and down-playing just about everything he was trying to say. I would like to read his book, I got that much out of the segment :D . I plan to email the View, and voice my opinion--which is all this rant is, by the way :)

:) Patti, I agree and will rant along with you. I get frustrated with that show for that exact reason. Too many of the hosts interrrupt the guest and you really can't get enjoyment or information that guest brings to the show. :( Not too many talk shows let the guests shine. I guess the only one I can really say does that is perhaps Charlie Rose, but he is on at midnight here.

I will check out the book, though!

Patti - I agree with everything in your rant (lol). It seemed as though at least everyone but Elizabeth was totally against even having this guy on the show but I wonder why.... I saw the nod you spoke up between the doc and Elizabeth too. I don't know why she can't just come out and admit why she's gluten free. Im also going to e-mail the show and let them know how dissappointing that segment was when in fact, if done correctly, could have helped thousands of people - at least! Remember though the sponsers of network tv are greatly represented by lots of gluten containing food makers..... In any case, it sounds like the book is worth looking into. For those who have lots of health issues, the book goes into how food is affecting those too. At least that is what I perceived from the 'barely could get a word in edgewise' good doctor'.

Robbin and Tiffany--Thanks for confirming that I wasn't being too critical--the thing is, how many times do they have a celebrity on and literally hang on every word they say? It was just so annoying to try and listen to what this man had to say, while they were cackling on over him. Well, if we feel this way, and let them know, maybe others around the country will do the same. I also wonder if they poo-poo'd the wheat talk because of sponsors--wouldn't surprise me at all. Grr-rr

PS--Tiffany, I also wonder why Elizabeth dosen't fully acknowledge her gluten problem. She alludes to it, but that's as far as it goes. I emailed her several months ago, and got no response.

Patti - I have no idea what Elizabeth is so scared of except her show advertizers which pay her salary.

I just googled the book and the Dr. who was on today has a website - www.unltrametablism.com which I'm pretty sure he did not get to mention today. Anyway, he has a little audio pc. you can click on to hear but it's nothing much. His diet is basically whole foods and no sugar or caffeine and I'm not sure I can cut those out too. Maybe one day I'll get there. But basically he says no packaged and processed foods which means essentially - no GLUTEN!

I saw that today too, and was frustrated right along with you. They were giving him such a hard time, and would not let the poor man speak. I was hoping more would be said about the gluten issue, but Elizabeth H. seemed to change the subject pretty quickly after that came up. Don't know what the deal is there....but it was really aggravating to watch.

GOING TO SEE WHAT IT SAYS NOW AND TOMORROW WILL TAKE SOME OF MY 1/2HR SITTING UP TIME TO SHOOT A NOTE OFF.

I e-mailed Dr. Hyman as well as Barbara Walters. I asked her why they bothered to have the guy on when they didn't let him get a word in edgewise and said if they'd let him speak and get a few statements completed he could have helped thousands of people who are sick and doctors can't figure out why.

Because people don't want to hear that the foods they're addicted to are having a negative effect on their health.

I think there's also a possibility that corporate sponsors -- particularly if they're big food companies that don't want to deal with the extra overhead of producing gluten-free products -- might not be so supportive of public exposure. I think this is why it's easier to pass celiac off as an allergy problem in the mainstream media -- otherwise, there would have to be a giant revolution in the way food is produced and processed in the US.

They are all careful not to admit anything. Notice how Star never admitted having a bypass? ha.

But i agree, I hate when they interrupt informative guests..just to make a joke or put in their two cents.

Although its true, the wheat-free thing is a 'fad' for some people , its too bad they didnt take that opportunity to inform more people about the legitimacy of it.

According to his book, he mentions thyroid affecting metabolism, hypothyroidism as a leading cause of weight gain..and "gluten-allergy" as a leading cause of hypothyroidism. And by removing gluten, in essence, u can boost your metabolism. YAY. I wish I could send this book to all my past gastroenterologists who said it was impossible for me to have celiac because i was overweight. Maybe im overweight BECAUSE i have celiac! (ok, that and i like to bake)

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.

My daughter has celiac disease and has had for a long time. She fell loses strictly gluten-free diet and recently got rid of all cutting boards in any gluten in her house at all. She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any kind of hidden glue? Help!
