So I went out with about 15 people from work today to Unos for lunch. It was the last day for one of the girls here at work. I have been gluten-free for about 8 months, but I really havent ventured out into the world of eating out yet. Still dont feel like Im ready.

Anyhow, I decided to go, but didnt feel like much eating anyways. I did have my own food with me at work. But as I sat down, drank my soda, everyone else was chowing down on pizza, and burgers, all the stuff that we cant have.

The weirdest thing ever happend..I DIDNT CARE that i couldnt have any of it! I didnt have a craving, I wasnt upset about it, I just kinda didnt mind.

Did that happen to anyone else?!?! Cause I was totally confused!

After half-way through the end of my fall semester at highschool, I didn't care if the whole place was made of out of pizza or hamburgers!!! Highschool is probably well know for absolutely junk-food at lunch (at least mine is) and I became very use to it. So, yep, I understand the same feeling :) I guess you adjust without knowing it for a little while.

I always feel like that. I have never craved gluten food. I'm sure most people go through a withdrawal/disbelief/mourning phase, but I never did. I got diagnosed and that was it. No more gluten, no problem. I do on occassion miss pizza and beer, but not to the point where I want to eat it.

I like to call restaurants before I go to ask about their gluten-free options. It's the one thing that has made me a lot more comfortable going to restaurants. That way I know what I'm getting before I go and don't have to spend a long time talking to the waiter while everyone else waits and wonders what my problem is. I also carry cards that say what I can and cannot eat. Or I get up and ask to speak to a manager before we order our meal to ask about their food preparation.

I am the same way. I can eat my own version of things. My body knows that the stuff makes me sick so it doesn't want any of it.

I ate lunch at Red Lobster with my DH and 2 other friends yesterday, and DH jokingly offered me a cheddar biscuit. I just looked at him like he was nuts (he knows and respects that I eat gluten free, he just is a big joker- the best at April Fools jokes. When he did that, one of our friends (not realizing he was joking) said, "That was soooo rude. Even I know better than to offer her that!" Of course then the appalled friends huband, who is oblivious to the fact that I eat gluten free looks confused and said, "What? You can't eat that" We explained why I can't. Anyhow, I didn't even want the biscuit in the slightest way, and I used to love eating those.

I told my DH later that I have been surprised that I haven't wanted to eat anything with gluten for the past month. My last craving episode was a month ago with Luby's macaroni and cheese. My DD wanted it when we went through the cafeteria line, but wouldn't eat it once we got to the table. I wanted to eat it sooooooooo bad. My mom was with us and kept giving me this "don't do it" look. I finally had to take 2 packets of sugar and pour it on top in order to keep myself from eating it.

I haven't had any craving for gluten since about a month after I started the diet. For me though I was so sick from it and still get horribly ill from CC that it would be akin to craving rat poison. I can honestly say I don't miss gluten food in the slightest. I was recently diagnosed as a diabetic and at a doctors appointment I mentioned I was having a bit of trouble adjusting to the new diet. He looks at me and gives me this sly smile and said something about my still eating gluten. My jaw almost bumped off the floor before I said no it's the sugar free and sweetner choices I am having a hard time with. 'Cheating' with gluten never crosses my mind, the repercussions are too severe.

Since I went gluten-free I haven't looked back. I still enjoy the smell of freshed baked bread in a bakery, but its not even a craving thing, its like smelling a flower and saying "oh thats nice". Other people are more worried about me being offended by their food than I am. The thing that gets to me is ordering in a restaurant sometimes just gets kinda irritating, usually when the restaurant isn't paying attn, but I never get the urge to eat gluten. If anything I have an opposite reaction, I walked past a wall of baked goods the other day and thought to myself "oh look at the wall of poison". I was worried when I first started that I would have cravings but I haven't at all. Its like it just turned off. Sometimes when people have pizza at work I'll go home and make myself a tortilla pizza, but its more of a "I smelled pizza and now I want my own" thing than anything else, if that makes sense.

I've not had the desire to eat gluten since I found out it was the cause of my illness. By the time I found out what was wrong with me, I would have done anything to feel better! After a year, that still holds true. I must have put up a mental block or something, because I don't even think about it. Like Elonwy, I still enjoy the smell of freshly baked bread or cinnamon rolls, but that's it--I simply like the smell, I don't crave the food.

i guess this all makes sense, i know that part of it is will power too....thank god for that. But it was weird it just kinda happend...but as i was sitting at the table today i was joking around with everyone, and i said i dont miss any of that at all....after all how do u think i keep my figure ;) ...i just kept thinking wow, i used to put all that C@%$ into my body...kinda was a huge turn off!

Wow, this is great. I hope my kids get to that level soon. I don't have celiac, but I am gluten free for their sake. When I pass cakes, donuts, etc. at the store, I now cringe as if it were poison. A year ago, I would have never believed it was possible since I am the JUNK FOOD QUEEN.

I found it all really distasteful once I figured out what it was doing to me. I did one gluten-free day, just to see if I was barking up the right tree. After that, I had a hard time even making myself eat anything with gluten in it. It was like trying to make myself put my hand in hot oil or something. Pure, instinctual avoidance of pain. I ended up throwing in the towel and going gluten-free three weeks before my biopsy. I just couldn't do it for another day. I was starting to just not eat rather than eat gluten. It was just too gross.

My GI doctor told me that he wanted me to do a gluten challenge and then report back my symptoms, and I was like, yea.... No.

I do still enjoy some smells some of the time. My FIL loves to bake bread, and I still love the smell when we go to their house. I kind of explain it like this: It's like enjoying the smell of perfume. Just because you like to smell perfume, doesn't mean you want to eat it.

A grocery store bakery is just way too overpowering for me now though. All that gluteny smell combined with all the super-sweet stuff. Blech blech, blech.

Before I was diagnosed I had quit eating a lot of gluten things, like pizza, without knowing why. There are things I most definitely miss, but in more than four years of being gluten-free I've never seriously considered eating something I knew had gluten.

I'm in a completely opposite place right now... I'm only 1 month into gluten-freedom though, & still symptomatic (sigh) so I'm hoping it gets better.

Anyway, I have always been fairly picky about my food, preferring to make my own or seek out really high-quality stuff. But when I go to the supermarket now & pass the bakery section, things that never tempted me in the least before now seem to be taunting me, "Nyah, nyah, you can't ever have me again!" Similarly, I hardly ever ate fast food, but this summer when we stopped at Bojangles on the way to the beach, I sat there moping as my husband & kids ate their goodies. I guess in the past I might have eaten two or three french fries, but suddenly everything just looked so tempting! Really weird.

Of course I'm also tempted by the things I really would have eaten-- Whole Foods' Harvest Grain bread haunts me! But that I would have expected. The fast food & doughnut cravings baffle me!

I will say though that as much as I crave these things, I don't really have to fight an urge to eat them-- I want so much to get better, it's not like I really want to ingest them. It's more of a feeling of mourning, almost, nostalgia maybe. Feeling left out, deprived, blah blah blah. I'm hoping I'll get over it soon.

My comfort zone is in my kitchen, where I've been baking up a storm, to the point where I'm gaining weight! (I'm not trying to, mind you!) I need to back off on that, actually, now that I've figured out how to make most of my faves gluten-free. (It was all for science, don't you know!) But that makes me feel even more deprived.

Thank goodness peach season is almost here. I can live without almost anything as long as I can binge on Carolina peaches!

p.s. I do find that baking Gluten-free yeast bread smells very nearly as good as the wheat kind, & my family seems to agree! Fresh homemade bread is yummier than almost any storebought, wheat or no, unless it too is right out of the oven.

The last time I was actually tempted to eat anything with gluten was last Thanksgiving. My dad and sister had come up, and brought with them 2 dozen assorted Krispy Kreme donuts. The donuts sat on the table, right in front of me, and I wanted one of the jelly and one of the glazed soooo bad! I resisted, though, since I did not want to spend the holidays sick. Now, I can buy KK donuts for my daughter, and not be bothered even a teeny bit. I was not the least bit tempted by cookies at a jewelry party, or anything else. I think once the gluten has completely cleared the body and the mind is free from its effects, the cravings go away, and the mind and body agree on not wanting to be sick again.

As others have said, nope, no temptation, never looked back. I was one of the "so very sick" folks, so when my dr said, and then I experienced that he was correct, that gluten was the problem, it was a no-brainer. Nope, I'm with the troupe who equates it with rat poison, I was just that sick and now I'm not. I'm not a 100% either, but I've "got to admit it's getting better, getting better all the time..." Wouldn't go back there for nothing, no way, uh uh, no how.

I do still trip at the Wheat Thins display, but it's more along the lines that smelling fresh-baked bread is for Elonwy. Would I eat one? Nope, not for a hundred bucks.

I follow this diet because of my son,so our kitchen is gluten-free df.recently I found out I am not tempted to eat pizza or... any more and I also feel much better on this diet.

      I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

      I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?

      HI, my doctor suggested one week of consuming gluten before blood tests.  I have been gluten free for 3 years.  Has anyone been through this and will I get exact results after one week of consuming gluten?  I don't even know if I can do this, if I get sick I am not sure if I can continue, any suggestions??  Thanks in advance.

      PPI's can be a wonderful healing agent when used as prescribed on the label which I believe recommends use of up to 8 weeks. But they are like antibiotics in that they are overprescribed and undermonitored. Docs generally prescribe them and then keep prescribing them because they take care of immediate symptoms so well. Physicians are more into treating symptoms than uncovering causes.
