Does anyone know of any gluten-free taco seasoning - the kind that comes in the little packets? I read in a different post on here that Old El Paso is gluten-free, but the first ingredient on all of them is maltodextrin. And I read something earlier today, also from this site, about the potential evils of maltodextrin.
Mostly I just (still) feel like weeping everytime I go to the grocery store! :unsure:

Originally from WI, I am still in denial over my newfound casein intolerance. I fear I will not be allowed back into the state if I can no longer eat cheese and drink milk. This could pose some trouble over holidays when I wish to visit my family. It also poses a problem involving the severe rage I feel when I have to throw away somebody's unfinished cheese sticks. That is so wrong.

Maltodextin is actually gluten-free.

I just use cumin, garlic and cayenne or chipotle pepper in mine. Be sure they're gluten-free. Most pre-packaged brands have msg, which is gluten-free, but bad for you.

It gets better, I promise. As for taco seasoning, I stick with McCormick.

To answer your direct question, the Old El Paso taco seasoning mixes are gluten-free. Old El Paso is a "trusted" brand who will clearly disclose gluten sources, using one of the words wheat, rye, barley or oat.

Maltodextrin is gluten-free, as is monosodium glutamate (MSG). Each of these ingredients has a following of people who believe that they are bad for you, but there is no reason a celiac should should view them any differently than a non-celiac.

I use the regular Old El Paso seasoning mix often.

Maltodextrin is made from Corn. It is a "saccharide" (sugar) - not anything to do with Malt as in Wheat, Barley or Rye.

Do a Google search on the word on it and many sites will confirm this.

Many thanks to everyone who takes the time to respond! :) Especially for answering the obvious questions that I, as a newbie, keep asking.

There's a LOT of big words out there in this gluten-filled world, a limited amount of space in my brain, and two summer courses that are jammed into the same four weeks.
