Hypothyroidism And Anemia

4 posts in this topic

Hi. I thought I would share my experience of what happened during my last pregnancy.

I have celiac disease, I also have hypothyroidism and anemia. During my last pregnancy (twin pregnancy), my thyroid levels and iron levels kept going all over the dial. My family dr. didn't know what was happening and we couldn't control them.

Finally, after going to see my thyroid specialist, he informed me that if you take your thyroid medicine and iron at the same time, they interact with each other and actually cancel each other out. He informed me to take my thyroid medicine in the morning and my iron in the evening. This made sense since when I got pregnant, we doubled my iron medication, thus, the interaction happened.

When I switched to taking them at different times, all my levels returned to normal.

My family dr. was surprised, had never heard of this, neither had the pharmacist at Shopper's Drug Mart (who usually informs you of any interactions.....)

Thought I would share in case this happens to someone else.

Have a great day!

Karen

you should wait an hour before eating after taking your thyroid medication. No calcium either. Several things will interfere so it's good to take it alone.

Hi Molly. That's very unusual and I'm glad it's working for you. For most people taking the thyroid with iron or calcium will lessen the effectiveness of there meds.
