Could anyone give me information on how malnutrition shows itself with Celiac's?

I have been having some symptoms and the only thing we can come up with is malnutrition.

Still trying to get a blood test but my school's health services are not be very cooperative and the symptoms are starting to affect my everyday life.

Could anyone give me information on how malnutrition shows itself with Celiac's?

I have been having some symptoms and the only thing we can come up with is malnutrition.

Still trying to get a blood test but my school's health services are not be very cooperative and the symptoms are starting to affect my everyday life.

Weight loss, paleness due to anemia, hair loss, white ridges on fingernails, fatigue, etc. are all commonly seen in malnourishment and thus Celiac.

Celiac symptoms can include the above plus gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, dark circles under the eyes, panic attacks, and burning sensation in limbs, just to name a few.

Some people get severe neurological symptoms (seizures, hallucinations, etc. as well).

Since you're not a new member, you are obviously on the gluten-free diet? If you are and still have weight loss etc. please see your doctor to rule out other conditions or associated conditions. There are other diseases that can cause similar symptoms that will need treatment that is NOT the gluten-free diet, which is why I think everyone should see a Dr. before doing starting gluten-free to treat their own symptoms. Just my opinion.

I was diagnosed with Celiac's by a blood test..have been gluten free since the beginning of June but have been showing these symptoms since November. We have rulled out so many things like inner ear infections and allergies.

Malnutrition was brought up because I do have nutrient definciencies and I am showing symptoms of malnutrition but the doctors don'tbelieve me and won't do the blood test.

so is it weird that i am gaining weight instead of losing it? When i first went on the diet i dropped 30 pounds but the past 2 weeks i have put on a few pounds....

I would say you should totally get tested. And you can be malnourished while not being underweight. My doctor told me after seeing my low protein levels in my blood and iron deficiency he determined malnourishment. I am also overweight, have been forever. As has been for as long as I could remember losing 20lbs. would finally get me into the normal weight range for my height. Maybe one of these days I can say I am actually healthy (nourished, feeling great, and a "normal" weight).

Definitely get your blood tested. Supposedly the usual test for Celiac Sprue should include a test for iron levels and other things like your protein levels to deterine if you are malnourished.

I have been trying to get in contact with my doctor back home, I am at school right now, to find out what they tested when they tested me for celiac's in may but i have been playing phone tag with him.

I am hoping when I go in to Health Services tomorrow and they see that I look like crap they will do the test on their own.

Get your Vitamin A and D levels checked. Most Celiac's are deficient in fat soluble vitamins...A, D, E, K.

Can they do that with just a simple blood test?

Talked to my doctor at home this morning YEAH!

He said my blood was testing 2 weeks ago and everything was perfect.

He believes I am having these symptoms because of my protein and calcium issues (I dont' get a lot of them) and also says this could be a sign that I was glutened so looks like not only does my stomach get upset but i get weak and lightheaded

It is my understanding that if your calcium levels or intake is low you will not lose weight.

Probably more information than most want to know, but I found this particular web page to have a ton of info. Though I will admit I haven't gone through it all yet.

      Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

      I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

      I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?

      HI, my doctor suggested one week of consuming gluten before blood tests.  I have been gluten free for 3 years.  Has anyone been through this and will I get exact results after one week of consuming gluten?  I don't even know if I can do this, if I get sick I am not sure if I can continue, any suggestions??  Thanks in advance.
