Think I may start a thread on this, the advancements in pump delivery.

POeter, have you ever considered going on the pump?

I missed the whole "insulin" part of the post, just saw you talking about "the pump" and then asking Petah if he'd tried it......Needless to say, my mind went to a totally dirty place

..but no, don't know what the 'Ejection Fraction' is. I am wondering now if he's had this a long time.

Many, many years ago when Terry & I first met I had to take him to A&E ER 'cos of chest pains....... then again, several times in the year leading up to his celiac disease dx...at one time they thought he had endocarditis :o

... but no follow up was ever done.

Another thing that worries me is that he lost SO much weight through undx celiac disease, was SO emaciated, that his heart was damaged 'cos of 'starvation' (like an anorexic)

Hmmm, lots to ponder on, - of course I wasn't there when Terry spoke to the doc so he didn't ask the RIGHT questions (as per usual... )...hope we don't have to wait too long for the MRI

Phind out, fer-sher what the 'Ejection Fraction" or "EF" is. Let me know if you find out. Let us know too when the MRI is! Has he had an Echocardiogram? How long ago was the endocarditis diagnosis and why wasn't it followed up? With that, he should have had and Echo to make sure that there was no infection on the heart valves. If this is all a true diagnosis, then this could be why he has a "weak heart" I want to know what his valves look like too.....You need to come see me, I want to help the poor guy so he can help you with chores :P

Kurt has man STOMACH phlugue   ! He's delirious and saying things like "is this how YOU feel when you throw up? I am so so so so sorry" and last night he said, in a weakened voice "Call the doctor- I have malaria." But last night the poor guy got dizzy, tripped, and fell on bathroom floor. :(

He's OK but currently laying on couch talking back to "Lawrence of Arabia"

So sorry he's sick, but this is phunny in a sick way ;) And do you know how long it took me to figure out what "phlugue" was

Psillie Docs . . . what do you make of this . . . Chronic cough since Chistmas. The antibiotic that they put me on for the sinus thing didn't do anything for it. Absolutely no coughing at night . . . laying down makes it go away. Cold dry air does me in and sets me coughing for quite some time. Somewhat productive except when I've been outside . . . that's just a dry (more phrequent) cough. I'm headed to the doc tomorrow. Co-workers are giving me a hard time for waiting so long . . . but everytime I would think "I'm going to call on Tuesday for an appt" then it would seem to get better. Anyhow, I wanted to see what you thought. Oh . . . no fever or nuttin' . . . and I was never a smoker . . . and I'm not out of breath when I exert myself (although I try not to exert myself  )

Also, Skeeter is regurgitating again so I had to call the doc for the erythromycin (sp??), picked it up (I hate our med insurance, it's not paying for crap!!!) but I'm planning to wait a few days before I start her on it. I started her on probiotics yesterday and I was looking at possibly some digestive enzymes but opted to push pineapple and papaya for awhile instead. Also cutting way back on the dairy to almost nothing (you would not believe how hard this is for her - harder than the gluten). So once again, I'm trying more than one thing so I won't know which worked. This is the second time she's been diagnosed with gastroparesis but she doesn't really fit the description. She's regurgitating food, but it's not the food from 7 hours ago, it's the food she just ate . . . and she's HUNGRY at meal times and has no problem putting away a decent amount of food.

Dang . . . I feel like all I've done since the beginning of the year is list symptoms for me and Skeeter.

Yous gals haff been thru too much!!! Have you had a chest xray? Any other tests done? any acid reflux issues? Esophageal issues?

What about Skeeter? Has she ever had an upper GI to look at her esophagus and stomach??

Does she ever get severe headaches/migraines?

Not to be crude/too intrusive, but what is the vomit like? Bitter/sour or just food?

Abdominal pain?

How frequent is the vomiting post ingestion? Any other symptoms that arise at/around the same time?

I'm trying to do some research for you, but I need a list of as many symptoms you can give, plus frequency and I'll see what I can dig up...

Me . . . no chest x-ray. Don't have indigestion too often, but I did have a bout a couple of years ago that I ended up going to the doc for . . . double-dose the over the counter meds for about a month and then weaned off over the next too months. I did read chronic cough can be caused by acid reflux so I started taking the OTC stuff again (one of the times I thought I might be making progress). Had a friend who has allergies/post-nasal drip issues who diagnosed my cough as a "sinus drainage" cough. Also read that could be a cause of chronic cough so I've been taking a claritan (also made me think I might be making progress). If I see a doc tommorrow, I will be expecting a chest x-ray but I'm expecting a nurse practitioner so I'm not too sure what he/she will do. I usually only agree to see a nurse practitioner when I already know what I need (ie I need a prescription for pink eye, sinus infection, ear infection, strep test . . . ummmmm  you know I don't get all of those at the same time :P ) I was NOT impressed with the last nurse practioner that I saw - she was the one that I saw when Skeeter was first diagnosed wif celiac disease - she announced the diagnosis (when I didn't even know Skeeter was being tested for it), handed me a bunch of reading material and rushed me out of the office while I was still trying to ask questions <_< . But this is a different NP and a different office, so we'll see.

Skeeter . . . regurgitation of food/acid reflux and constipation (not horrible and I don't know for a fact that it was caused by the celiac disease) were her only symptoms. They scoped her looking for EE. At the time of the scope, they also biopsied the small intestine since they were in the neighborhood. The drew blood at the same time just to screen for a couple of different things. Celiac disease was one of them. Scope did not show much damage from acid reflux (she had been on prevacid for a couple of months by this time). I asked for them to test for a lactose intolerance and they actually tested for all the main enzymes (I think there were 5). Her blood test was very positive (tTg and EMA)but there was no real visual villi damage. GI apologized later saying he would have taken a lot more biopsies (he only took 2) if he really thought that she had celiac disease from the start. However, the smoking gun was the enzyme test that I asked for (maybe everyone gets this?) but not only was she deficient in lactase, she was defficient in all of the 5 enzymes that they tested for resulting in a generalized disaccharidase deficiency. So if you talked to her original GI - he says the biopsy is positive for celiac disease. If you talk to her current GI, he says it's inconclusive. Now . . . she typically regurgitates food starting 10 to 30 minutes after eating. It is usually just food. I can usually identify it as something she just had. It is usually not sour (but can be when it continues for awhile). It usually occurs 2 to 4 times after a meal about 10 minutes or so apart. It can go on longer. She does not complain of abdominal pain or migraines. She rarely complains of headaches. She knows it's coming. When I ask her where she feels it, she basically indicates her sternum. She says she can feel it rising. She does not wake up to regurgitate. She can (but not always and maybe not even usually) have a really sour breath in the morning. She's currently on omeprazole. She has a diet heavy in dairy (and always had). It's worse on school days (and started out only happening at school immediately after lunch). She always takes her lunch and I trust her that she doesn't cheat at school. I have gone and watched/spied at lunch . . . not because I didn't trust her (she is a big time rule follower on this diet) but I wanted to see how well tables were cleaned and if anyone touches her food when she goes and gets her drink. It's worse after riding the school bus. She will tell me that she feels like she's going to "spit-up" followed shortly (5 minutes later) by "I'm hungry". Her appetite is good. It does not appear to be particularly dependent on the amount of food she eats. Constipation does not seem like an issue now.

OK . . . it's after midnight . . . I shall read my own post for a second time to make myself tired and go to bed . . . Thanks Rae!!!

Gawd...I'd ferget me 'ead.... <_<

Anywho, Jan-it, I'm happy Rah-shell is on the case. A conundrum fer sure. I was wondering if a hiatal hernia might be involved for you? I have one (found via endoscopy) and coughing is associated with it--I also get hiccups easily. Getting up out of a chair can trigger them. Just a thought since you also have had indigestion. I don't get indigestion as much as the other things, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Skeeter questions.....

Skin issues-any?

Sinus issues?

Common denominator in foods she eats before she vomits?

How many times per week does the vomiting occur?

Does she vomit at school too or just at home?

How old is she?

Normal blood pressure?

Depending on how frequently she vomits, the constipation can be from lack of fiber and liquid intake from the vomiting, however, since she has such a high dairy diet, that seems to be the most likely cause

I would really suggest going totally dairy free for a few weeks to see what happens. I am finding multiple articles in GI medical journals talking about dairy/lactose issues causing vomiting post consumption....

2 other causes I keep coming up with are gluten consumption as well as CVS (Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome)

Stupid move last night--been very anxious lately (too many things piling up) and I had a huge bowl of ice cream that I knew was cross contaminated. Went the whole route wif Nestle's chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Woke up feeling like I was hit in the back of the head wif a 2x4.

Actually, reading this it's pretty pathetic that I decide to throw caution to the wind wif ice cream. Shoulda had wine er sumphin.....

Skeeter questions.....

Skin issues-any? Not really. Had a face rash a couple of weeks ago after being on generic reglan for 10 days.Sinus issues? No

Common denominator in foods she eats before she vomits? No. I had a couple of dairy free meals (not consecutive) where she regurgitated.

How many times per week does the vomiting occur? When she was in full swing (late Jan) it was probably 40 to 50 times. It is only a mouthful each time with 5 to 10 minutes between occurances. The exception was this Monday at school where she truly (continously/large volume) vomitted. It doesn't happen every day and some days it seems to just go on and on.

Does she vomit at school too or just at home? Yes (initially started with only regurgitating at school)How old is she? 9Normal blood pressure? yes

Depending on how frequently she vomits, the constipation can be from lack of fiber and liquid intake from the vomiting, however, since she has such a high dairy diet, that seems to be the most likely cause The constipation was an issue three years ago when she was being diagnosed . . . not an issue right now.

I would really suggest going totally dairy free for a few weeks to see what happens. I am finding multiple articles in GI medical journals talking about dairy/lactose issues causing vomiting post consumption.... We're trying. Have cut her dairy by 95% in the last couple of days. Very hard for her to give this up.

2 other causes I keep coming up with are gluten consumption (see below) as well as CVS (Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome) CVS sounds interesting. I'll have to google that.

I did actually find something that she was consuming that had barly in it. I didn't realize it until late January but I know for a fact that she had quit consuming it WEEKS earlier because SHE said it bothered her. So part of me wonders if this all was just her system spiraling out of control after the fact. When she was first diagnosed, she continued to have sporadic regurgitation problems (not this severe) for about 10 months (the last two of which was really minor). At the time I was about to take away the dairy and we took her off all meds so that I could see what symptoms (and severity)were being masked. At the same time, I put her on a probiotic because one of the meds she was on was a long term low dose antibiotic and I thought maybe her gut was out of balance. Things cleared up (slowly) after that without ever removing (or reducing) the dairy intake.

In regards to dairy, would you expect an immediate response upon ingestion and you would need to ingest it at that meal? Or do you think it's a cummulative sort of thing that needs to build up and reach some sort of threshold? How quick to see a response to its removal?

Smackl grabbed one of Skeeter's new phake cheese slices for a snack and gagged on it, yelling "what is this?" "something's wrong with this!!!" "this is nasty!!!" . . . now, it was kind of funny because he was totally caught off-guard but at the same time, she's listening to him call her phood nasty :(

I saw the doc today . . . yay, I was surprised. He thought asthma. So I had a lung capacity test (or sumptin like that) and I passed with phlying coloUrs with a 129% . . . I could tell he was impressed that I could really blow. So then he sent me for a chest x-ray . . . I'll get the official radiologist reading Monday, but doc's reading was that it looked like either asthma or one of a couple of bacterial infections that would not have been particularly affected by the Augmentum he had me on in January for my sinuses. He actually said a lot more than this . . . talking about the particular area involved. . . but I'm not so good at remembering doctorese. So I'm on an inhalor and another antibiotic for the next two weeks.

A shroomie update: (a long Shroomie story apropos of absolutely nuffin)

Soy in the open-faced sandwich caused a loopity loop which I hope Holter duly recorded (if he was not asleep like I was). I had one other minor electrical disturbance so hope that was enough for them to see. So it's beginning to look like lectins are the root cause of these electric shocks. Took the Holter off early (before I left the house in the morning) because there was no way I was going to be able to remove it during the day and because nothing ever happens during the day anyway! (Also because I couldn't find any "smart" clothes that looked halfway decent with all the wires and electrodes and the strap trying to choke me and the big bulge that did not look like a Colt 45 at my side (well, maybe a Luger) but anyways, despite all helpful suggestions here did not want to alarm the charitable pholks of Christchurch who were paying $55 for the privilege of seeing these ten houses, and one could just see the headline "Fendalton Matron Dies of Shock During Charitable Event!". )

First house we visited as our volunteer freebie (we were on in the afternoon so in the morning we could fit in as many as we could) was a modern home with beautiful stream boundary across the back, a swimming pool surrounded by art, colourful sculptures of jazz musicians throughout the house, and some kind of invisible biting varmint which promptly sank its fangs into Shroomies left elbow :o just where her jacket sleeve ended. Searing pain (and no, we don't have snakes here, so believe it was a spider, maybe one of those hitch-hiking Australian white-tailed varmints, a no see-um, no feel-um except for the pain). A little while later the puncture marks became visible and the redness and swelling increased throughout the day. But Shroomie bravely soldiered on :D (you will note Shroomie has still not properly adjusted to first person speech again).

We also visited a lovely old colonial home of stately proportions, but which had had all the land sold off around it so it sat cramped on its little remaining lot. Some previous custodian of this property had been very greedy in the past. But the house itself was lovely with leaded windows, bow windows with window seats, original brass light switches and lovingly dragged into the 21st century with appropriate modern apppurtenances and oodles of nice bathrooms (however, retaining one old loo in a blue and white kind of willow tree pattern, a true gem).

The home we were assigned to ended up being the feature home of the tour, and was crawling with volunteers from the Cancer Society, as well as we 9 "officials" with the lanyards in addition to our daffodil boutonnieres (the Society's official symbol). Shroomie ended up being the traffic cop  on the second floor landing, with the left hand instructing the stair climbers to continue on to the top floor and with the right hand directing the stair descenders to the master bedroom. "This way please, ladies" with a smile plastered on face. "On up the stairs phirst, please" (same smile--it got stuck that way after a while. Have not smiled since! Gorgeous house built in 1897-1905, originally 40 rooms, now some have been combined, still eight bedrooms, most with ensuites, a nursery (five beds of varying sizes like a dorm, and including an iron cot, an original kauri wooden cradle, and a doll's pram. There had to be at least ten bathrooms, including an original with the original iron claw tub with a shower enclosure built around one end and molded onto the tub, the original shower head, no loo--just a chamberpot under the dresser, no washbasin (just a bowl and pitcher) and what was either a square bidet or d%$#@#$--much discussion about this, with three valves to control, a sqare bowl in a victorian ceramic pattern, all juxtaposed against the modern family bathroom next door opposite the nursery. All those bathrooms and we could nae use one of them. :( The gym and movie theater were on the top floor, the dining room seats 20 of your closest friends (but if they were at the other end they wouldn't be very close) and the living room opened onto a very gracious verandah where the traditional British cream tea and sandwiches were being served in the best china :D . This owner was very gracious in allowing the guests to bring their tea into the living room when it began raining (although service on the verandah was not impaired). After my traffic control duties I was switched to the living room to keep peeps from stealing the lovely stupphh on display there and got to sit for a while. One of the tea volunteers just before 4 PM brought me a plate of goodies trying to use up the supplies, and was very knowledgeable when I politely declined due to gluten intolerance. :)

Off duty at last I dropped off the monitor, asked the gals to look at my arm, they sent me to the pharmacy, pharmacist said if it were her she would go to doctor because so many of them turn necrotic  . Called Clay and asked him what kind of caulk he wanted me to get and told him about the bite, and he sent me off to A&E (24-hour surgery) since it was a Friday afternoon. Explained to doc I have no immune system because of Humira  , and was concerned, so she put me on a low dose of Flucoxacillin as a preventive. But looks much better this morning, so maybe my flesh won't rot off after all. Anyway, even with ACC coverage (national insurance for "accidents") the visit cost me $40, the antibiotics $15, so I might just as well have paid the $55, gone to all the houses, and not have had to work. But then again, I would not have earned any Brownie points either (and ya never know when yer goin' to need those ) .

Hi @trents Just seen this - Boot's is a chain of pharmacies in the UK, originally founded in the 19th Century by a chap with the surname, Boot.  It's a household name here in the UK and if you say you are going to Boot's everyone knows you are off to the pharmacist! Cristiana

I am looking to find a Celiac Dietician who is affiliated with the Celiac Disease Foundation who I can set up an appointment with.  Can you possibly give some guidance on this?  Thank you!

Nacina, Knitty Kitty has given you good advice. But I would say/add find a Fat Soluble B-1 like Benfotiamine for best results.  The kind found in most Multivitamins have a very low absorption rate. This article shows how taking a Fat Soluble B-1 can effectively help absorption by 6x to7x times. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/journal/thiamine-deficiency-and-diabetic-polyneuropathy quoting from the article.... "The group ingesting benfotiamine had maximum plasma thiamine levels that were 6.7 times higher than the group ingesting thiamine mononitrate.32" Also, frequency is much more important than amount when it comes to B-Vitamin. These are best taken with meals because they provide the fat for better absorption. You will know your B-Vitamin is working properly when your urine becomes bright yellow all the time. This may take two or three months to achieve this.......maybe even longer depending on how low he/you are. The Yellow color is from excess Riboflavin bypassing the Kidneys....... Don't stop them until when 2x a day with meals they start producing a bright yellow urine with in 2 or 3 hours after the ingesting the B-Complex...... You will be able to see the color of your urine change as the hours go by and bounce back up after you take them in the evening. When this happens quickly......you are now bypassing all the Riboflavin that is in the supplement. The body won't absorb more than it needs! This can be taken as a "proxy" for your other B-Vitamin levels (if taken a B-Complex) ...... at least at a quick and dirty level......this will only be so for the B-1 Thiamine levels if you are taking the Fat Soluble forms with the Magnesium as Knitty Kitty mentioned. Magnesium is a Co-Factor is a Co-factor for both Thiamine and Vitamin D and your sons levels won't improve unless he also takes Magnesium with his Thiamine and B-Complex. You will notice his energy levels really pick up.  His sleeping will improve and his muscle cramps will get better from the Magnesium! Here is nice blog post that can help you Thiamine and it's many benefits. I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice God speed on your son's continued journey I used to be him. There is hope! 2 Tim 2:7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included. Posterboy by the grace of God,

I'll answer your second question first. The single best antibody test for monitoring celiac blood antibody levels is the tTG-IGA and it is very cost effective. For this reason, it is the most popular and often the only test ordered by physicians when checking for celiac disease. There are some people who actually do have celiac disease who will score negatives on this test anyway because of anomalies in their immune system but your wife is not one of them. So for her, the tTG-IGA should be sufficient. It is highly sensitive and highly specific for celiac disease. If your wife gets serious about eating gluten free and stays on a gluten free diet for the duration, she should experience healing in her villous lining, normalization in her antibody numbers and avoid reaching a celiac health crisis tipping point. I am attaching an article that will provide guidance for getting serious about gluten free living. It really is an advantage if all wheat products are taken out of the house and other household members adopt gluten free eating in order to avoid cross contamination and mistakes.

Thanks this is helpful. Couple of follow -ups- that critical point till it stays silent is age dependent or dependent on continuing to eat gluten. In other words if she is on gluten-free diet can she stay on silent celiac disease forever?    what are the most cost effective yet efficient test to track the inflammation/antibodies and see if gluten-free is working .
