So Many Newbies Have Joined Us

Hey Guys & Girls:

I know that I am not the only one who have noticed the addition of many Newbies on Celiac.com. What a wonderful thing that is. People are being dx's and public information has improved. So many have come to us for help.

I have also noticed, that some of their questions have gone unanswered, or minimally addressed. Not everyone will have an answer, but a concerned knock on the door is an opportunity to ease a great deal of anxiety.

Before you go to that comfort thread, brows through the threads and add some input, whether just to say hello and welcome, help interperet their dx numbers, or just add a suggestion for a meal or a safe product.

Make someones day. :)

"be-be-be-beep...This is the end of this public service announcement"

Thank You for listening.

I would also add, as a pretty new member myself, that a lot of the best information can be found by doing a search on past topics and seeing if what I need to know has already been covered. Sometimes a new topic won't get as much attention because it's been discussed a good deal in the past. Nothing wrong with asking something a second time, but the depth of the archives here can be a newbies best friend. I know it has mine.

How well you have put everything Lisa. I will certainly try harder to help in some way. And if I can't be of any help, I will at least say hi.

THANK YOU for the public announcment! Sometimes we need to be reminded.

Lisa,

Agreed.

Please, newbies, speak up. Badger us. If we don't respond, post a second post and say, HELP ME. (It will be a slap on the wrist for us).

Please feel free to PM any of us. Honestly. If you see something you've read (that say, maybe I posted about), PM me and I'll try and expand. I can almost guarantee that 99% of board members will agree.

We are here to help!

What an OUTSTANDING POST!

Thank you for putting this up again. Never can hear it too often.

There were alot of other great suggestions added ...as usual..!

We have such great minds and experience on this forum...and as we are EACH struggling with our new issues after months and years of gluten-free eating..the search for answers never seems to go away of get easier.

I agree to with LauraJ..if anyone here sees a post from me and wants to pm me PLEASE DO.

I have not been a regular poster for the past 4 weeks but will try harder to at least add a welcome when I come on line even if I don't feel I have any info on the topic posted.

Wishing Everyone Good Health

I will be out of town for about a week, in and out...and therefore, I will be not posting. I just did not want to appear hypocritical with not posting, but will continue upon my return. :)

I agree with both bklynceliac and momma goose.

I usually try to post on newbie threads. Some days I don't have much time though.

People can also pm me. I will try to answer or make suggestions on who could help.

I have had pm's before after newbies have read some of my posts.

Nooner Newbie

Another relative newbie here, and I just want to say that all you veterans are awesome!

If I hadn't found this message board, I'd still be floundering, instead of making actual headway toward being healthy again. I feel like the collective experience here has knocked 3 years off the gluten free learning curve for me.

Honestly, I haven't posted a new question yet, because every time I have one, a search through the archives comes up with an answer. But I won't hesitate to start a new thread if I need to.

Thank you all!

Nooner,

I am so happy this board has helped you so much. It really is an amazing source of information, research, and comfort.

Just think, soon YOU will be one of the oldies, answering everyone's questions. It really is a "pay it forward" board. We are all so grateful to be better, we just want to help everyone :)

Creative-Soul Newbie

I'm so glad I saw this thread; my mission this morning was to post one of my own just to say thank you to all the veterans - and other newbies - for all of the help you've given me through the gracious sharing your stories and tips...I'm still poring through all the old posts a few pages at a time when I can until I can't see straight!!! I spent a a happy hour or two last night poring through Amanda's Mommy's Blog to see which personal products I can use. You guys and this site are a God-send!!! I've gained many ideas of how to manage having multiple allergies/intolerances, dealing with people who don't understand (and sometimes it's so frustrating to explain things when you're still learning it yourself) ;) and how to navigate the "minefield" of dating ( I just met someone new and have been open about it from the get-go...we go where I know I can eat safely, and that's it for now!)

I wish I could give you all a big hug. I will be PMing some of you, so be forewarned!

Have a wonderful day!

Sissy Rookie

As a newbie I so appreciate all the responses to my first posts, you have no idea how much it meant...the day I found this board I was at the depths of depression and confusion and I was very sick, weak and fatigued, I actually sat here with tears running down my face when I started reading...I not only got support and hope from the new posts, but I have learned so much from from all your past posts. I knew nothing about cross contamination until I read it on your board...I had no idea that restaurants offered gluten-free menus and I think the biggest shocker of all was that cosmetics, lotions, shampoo and external products could have an effect on me. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. Sissy

I think back to the days when I first came on here and was shocked that I could get glutened by using the same toaster as the rest of my non-gluten-free family!

We've come a long way, baby!!!

Hugs.

Just a thought. I have been here on this forum for about 6 months, and have been diagnosed for about 8 months. What I want to know, is when do you go from being a newby to a veteran? I really should've been a veteran the moment I joined, since I am creeping up to fifty. But being a newby sounds fine, it sort of re-juvenates me. But I guess I should be moving on to veterans status.

I think it's just a matter of when you know enough to answer questions. At first, you keep asking questions, eventually you get to the point where you think, "Wow, I know the answer to that!" Then you are one of the veterans. :)

I think sometimes the pain described here can be a result of a sort of 'perfect storm' of contributing factors.  Recently I had an appalling bout of lower back pain, lower burning gut pain and what felt like cramps.  I then started to think about what could have caused it and I realised it was several things that had set it off: I'd been carrying heavy luggage (back strain); I had been sitting down in a car for too long and wearing a tight belt (I have pudendal nerve issues and sacroiliac issues and this exacerbates the pain), and I had bloating and burning pain in my colon caused by eating too much soy, latte and caffeine, I guess putting further pressure in the lower abdomen.  I had this same pain prior to my diagnosis and a couple of years post-diagnosis, I'd quite forgotten how unpleasant it was.

HI @Kirbyqueen That's great news your insurance will be kicking in soon.  Sorry to see that you have been dealing with this for six months now, but I do hope you have managed to find some relief with some of the suggestions in the meantime. Perhaps come back and let us know what the doctor says. Cristiana

I agree, and hopefully your doctor will contact you soon about the next step, which will likely be an endoscopy to confirm your diagnosis. Do you have celiac disease symptoms?
    • Kirbyqueen
Still dealing with this rash on my legs. I've eliminated ringworm (through use of topical ointments). And I also know it's not shingles, as I've never had chickenpox before and I'm still fairly young. Through a lot of online research, I'm leaning more towards dermatitis herpetiformis, eczema, or psoriasis. I've actually got a doctor's appointment in May (finally got some insurance) and I'm going to bring it up then. I'm feeling really hopeful and excited to maybe be getting some relief soon.   Big thanks to everyone for the suggestions and positive thoughts!

You have three celiac disease specific antibody tests that are positive: Endomysial  Antibody IGA (aka, EMA), tTG-IGA, and tTG_IGG. Furthermore, your Immunoglobulin A at 55 is low, meaning you are IGA deficient. This one is not an antibody test for celaic disease per se but a measure of "total IGA" levels and if low (yours is low) it can suppress the individual antibody scores and even cause false negatives. So, yes, it definitely looks like you have celiac disease.   Do not yet begin a gluten free diet as your physician may refer you to a GI doc for an endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel lining for confirmation of the antibody testing. This may help:
