Masa Harina Flour

Does anyone know where to buy masa harina that is definitely gluten free? I want to make some sweet corn cakes, but I don't know where to buy the stuff. Bob's Red Mill has some, but it's not on their gluten free list nor do I trust BRM.

If this isn't possible to buy gluten free, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for substitutions? I'm dying to have sweet corn cakes. My pregnancy cravings are kicking in full swing!!! Would quinoa flour possibly work? Or cornmeal ground up really fine?

Hi Angie

Goya brand can be found in most stores.. If you can't find it send me a personal e-mail & I'll send you a bag.

Besides your food cravings how is the pregancy coming along??? I wish you the best.

Mamaw, the pregnancy is going great so far. I'm almost 14 weeks already. We had to have an ultrasound two weeks ago because the baby was measuring in at 18 weeks and I'm feeling him move already. Turns out that he's just a strong little kicker and he measured in at a perfect 12 weeks via ultrasound. So, things are good. The ultrasound looked really good and I got pictures. Yea!!! That's always exciting. Hopefully at the next ultrasound we'll be able to find out the gender. We're hoping for a boy this time. I can't believe I was feeling him move at 11.5 weeks! It's definitely the baby moving though, we could tell from the ultrsound picture vs. what I was feeling.

Is corn flour the same as masa harina? I thought that Goya claimed that nothing they made was gluten free due to contamination issues. Has that changed recently? I contacted them like two years ago and they told me to stay away from their products. Hopefully that's changed because I know I can find that online somewhere or around here. If corn flour is the same thing, I know where I can get that easily.

Don't quote me, but I think Masa Harina is white corn flour and corn flour is yellow. There may be lime juice involved in the Masa Harina. I got mine at Superstore (Cdn) on the taco/taco mix/salsa aisle. I haven't used it yet though.

Glad to hear the pregnancy is going well.

Maybe it's a west coast thing, but I can usually find it in most grocery stores in he hispanic food section. I beleive WinCo had it. I usually use masa harina to make tamales

I've never seen masa harina anywhere... Is it generally gluten free? It's not on Bob's Red Mill's gluten free list. Not that I would want to buy it from them anyway.

Hi Angie

I'm glad to hear everything is moving along !!!!! Did you have the strong kicking with the little , big sister??? I think that is how I figured out the sex of my two. They were so different in movements.I'll hope for a boy too!!!!

I don't use Goya products except I eat a bag of their plantain chips about once a year..... I never got sick from them but I don't know about the c/c.... I just know I've seen it at the grocery stores.I think that this is alittle coarser than corn flour. When I make arepas I use P.A.N.

Oh , do you have the recipe for choc.gluten-free whoopie pies? I lost my gluten recipe so I can't even try to change it to gluten-free. If you do , please e-mail it to me.

Okay, I found Goya masa harina at Wal-mart, but it said on the bag "may contain wheat" so I didn't buy it. Is P.A.N. a brand name? If so, I'll just find it online somewhere and buy some.

Masa Harina is a brand of yellow corn flour (not meal, not starch) - commonly used in the southwest for making corn tortillas. Thanks to my time in Phoenix, I became well acquainted with Masa Harina. Our Aldi (in PA) sells Masa Harina. I used to get it from a mexican grocery when we lived in Phoenix.

If you have trouble...find an Indian or Asian Grocery and buy yellow corn flour...just make sure it's flour and not meal or starch. :D

Hi Angie

P.A.N. is an import from Venezuela. It is in an orange pkg with an ear of corn on the front. I use it to make arepas ( corn cakes) It says 100% maiz on the front. If you have an Asian store or Spanish store they will most likely carry this...

Again , if you can't find it I'll be glad to send you a pkg....

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.
    • trents
What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
