HELLO! I live in Bakersfield and I'm a celiac. As far as I know there aren't any support groups here but I know two other celiacs living here. It's wonderful to hear there is somebody else here too.

Hi Stargirl,

How long since you've been diagnoised. It's only been since July for me.

Dr. Bhaika is my doctor.Who was your doc that found the Celiac. Maybe we can get with our doctors to maybe get started in some kind of support group here in Bakersfield. What do you think?

I am so excited to see other posts from Bakersfield! I also have been looking for a support group here in Bakersfield. I was finally diagnosed by Dr. Gupta 2 years ago. I feel better than I have ever felt. Maybe we can form a group, I can sure use some encouragement! Let me know if you would like to contact me by email.

I have so many ? re:celiac. I will contact Dr. Bhaika today to see if we could use his office or if he has any suggestions.

I have been off work since 3-20-04 due to medical problems. I returned to work 9/02. I was taken to the ER because I lost all muscle control and could not open my eyes. This was the problem before, but w/seizure like activity(non epi.)

You can e-mail me at mitchriders5@yahoo.com. Hope to hear from you.

I was diagnosed January of 2004, so moving up on one year for me. I was diagnosed by my mother actually but had the diagnosis confirmed by Dr. Tipton, a pediatric GI. Unfortunately we couldn't really work with us here, he is only in Bakersfield for about a day a month, the rest of the time he works at UCLA. I would enjoy being a part of a celiac support group here in Bakersfield. My life is a little crazy right now, it's my senior year of high school and I'm pretty busy. I know three other Celiacs that live here that might be interested too. Keep me updated!

Outback does have a gluten-free menu, take a look at their website. My husband and I go there on our dates. Let me know where & when, I would like to get involved with a support group. I have a commitment tomorrow and a campout with the boy scouts this weekend (my husband is the leader), but I can start planning for any future meetings.

Thanks,

chuot

Hey, Outback sounds good to me. I will take a look at their web site. Are you available during the day?(school hours). My husband works M-F in Ventura. Weekends are our family days. The doctor has me off work still so i'm pretty flexible M-F. I hope the other bakersfield Celiacs respond as well.

Hi guys! It's Laura again. I love the idea of meeting at Outback and having a dinner together but I can't do Wednesday. If it is possible to move it I would enjoy going. It is fine, however, if you want to go ahead and leave it on the 13.

Hi Debbie, sorry to hear about the fatigue. My mom, aunt and myself all went and waited for 45 minutes but no one showed up so we left. Sorry no one could make it, we better exchange phone numbers for next time to avoid the confusion.

I'm so sorry I missed your email on Sunday! We were camping with the cub

scouts and got back late. We were so tired when we got home. I didn't have time to check my email because of the unpacking we had to do and getting ready for work and school on monday. Maybe we can plan for October 25th I wouldn't mind hosting a meeting in my home sometime. How does that sound to you all?

Hope to hear from you again.

    • Thank you cyclinglady! We'll just keep pushing forward and we'll get things figured out one way or another. You have been most helpful and informative and given me some great resources and things to consider. I really appreciate it! I definitely feel better as I've felt like a crazy mom lately thinking through the test results and everything. Even if it turns out to not be celiac or gluten related, at least I can say we did our due diligence and looked under every rock to find the source of his troubles. Thanks again!  Take care!
    • Anxiety is quite a common symptom with undiagnosed celiacs. It should improve if not disappear when you go gluten free. Be sure to CONTINUE eating gluten until the endoscopy!   Welcome to the club!
    • Although serological tests are useful for identifying celiac disease, it is well known that a small minority of celiacs are seronegative, and show no blood markers for celiac disease. A team of researchers wanted to define the prevalence and features of seronegative compared to seropositive celiac disease, and to establish whether celiac disease is a common cause of seronegative villous atrophy. • This was absolutely me before diagnosis.  The worst of all of my Celiac symptoms occurred in the morning.  The anxiety was terrible in the mornings, I had horrible nausea, no appetite, felt light headed, dizzy and shaky, diarrhea, stomach cramps... the works.  Honestly, I don't know if it was the symptoms causing the anxiety, the anxiety making my symptoms worse, or a combination.  I almost dropped out of school because I felt so terrible every morning I didn't want to leave the house to go to class.  The first few doctors I saw insisted all of my symptoms were psychological and tried to give me anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds, but I knew there was something else wrong with me.  I had always been a bit "high-strung," but for the year I was really sick before diagnosis, the anxiety got out of control. I was diagnosed with celiac disease 6 months ago and have been gluten free ever since.  It took time, but everything is gradually improving.  The morning anxiety is much improved and some mornings, is completely gone.  I realized a month or two ago that I no longer spend the first hour after waking up gagging and dry-heaving, something I had done for so many years that I just thought it was normal for me.  I can brush my teeth and my tongue without feeling like I'm going to puke.  I eat breakfast now, which I have never done, because I was always too anxious and nauseous in the mornings to be hungry.  I am not "all better."  I still have bad days and even bad weeks.  If I get glutened the anxiety comes back full force.  If I'm super-stressed out or letting my health slide (not eating well, not sleeping enough) the AM anxiety seems to return.  But, it has been slowly improving over the last 6 months and has become so much more manageable.   Your anxiety could be a separate disorder from the celiac disease, but for me, it seems it was absolutely related and continues to get better.  Don't get discouraged if you don't see an immediate improvement or experience relapses after improving.  Often, I feel like it's a two-step-forward, one-step-back kind of thing, but it is getting better.
    • I have suffered with GERD for 20 years and accidently found out it was a gluten intolerance. I had gone on Atkins years ago and noticed that I had no GERD symptoms while on the diet. I didn't make the connection at that time. Then I went on the Mayo Diet back in the winter and once again, the constant was having no bread primarily. I had also noticed that I would have major attacks anytime I ate Italian food. I blamed it on the onions, the tomatoes, herbs...but I could tolerate all those foods separately. Then, like a lightning bolt...it hit me...the culprit was the "innocent" pasta. BINGO!!  I went gluten-free in March 2016 and I have had no GERD now in 5 months. I feel as if it is a gift to me.
