I Feel Great

Ok, this may sound like bragging and maybe I am, but I feel great.

It's been a month now that I've been 99% gluten-free, except for the late evening cookies and

the accidental glutening on the cruise ship.

I feel really good.

-I'm no longer bloated and going to the bathroom 8 times per day.

-I can go on a nice long 6 mile run and not worry about it.

-I have a ton of energy, especially for almost being 47

-I'm in a much better mood...the difference between night and day. I basically feel

quite happy to be alive, which is..you know...better than I've felt in about 6 years.

-My chronic heartburn has lessened substantially, I still get it, but it's not killing me anymore.

Really Jerry, that's so good to hear! :D

Aren't you glad you took the bull by the horns, listened to your body and did what you had to do?

Think of it this way Jerry. There are more nerve endings in your gut than there are in your brain. Your gut is responsible

for creating more then half of the hormones that keep you functioning every day. And NOW your gut is no longer

being attacked on a daily basis, it's healing. OF COURSE you feel better! Yay for you!!!

You know what? I feel better than I ever did before too!

Oh, and the heartburn could still be dietary, I usually hear people recommending to cut out starchy/sugary foods for a while

and also caffeine? Or at least coffee, because it's so acidic and oily. Never had it, just an idea.

Congrats on the 99%! I am confused about the late evening cookies though. Ditch the cookies. Accidents and oopsies are one thing, but keeping tempting cookies is not compliant with the diet.

Low gluten, almost gluten free are not as beneficial as gluten free.

Jerry, that's awesome that you feel so much better. If you want good (gluten free) cookies, try Kinnikinnick's K-toos. They're just like Oreos, but they won't make you sick. They also make a kick butt ginger snap. Perhaps that will help keep you from cheating.

Dear JerryK,

Congratulations! ;) We are so proud of you! Stay away from the gluten cookies, though. They hurt you. I love cookies, too. They are the only sweet besides chocolate I have difficulty resisting. I would be more than happy to give you a recipe that your wife could make them for you. My specialty is cookies. Chocolate Chip are my favorite. I am going to make some this week.

I know how you feel with the heartburn. I have to take Prilosec OTC twice daily. Now I can actually skip a dose occaisionally and only take one. Before going gluten free, that was a different story. I had such bad reflux, I was practically sleeping sitting straight up, and taking two Prilosecs, and avoiding chocolate, tomatoes, citrus, etc. and it just was unbearable.

NoGluGirl's Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 Cups sweet rice flour

1/2 Cup each light brown sugar and granulated sugar

1/3 Cup each Smart Balance Margerine and Crisco Vegetable Shortening

1 egg

1/4 cup milk or soymilk such as Wal-Mart's Great Value

1 teaspoon each Durkee Vanilla Extract, salt, Arm and Hammer baking soda, and baking powder

1 1/2 cups Hershey milk chocolate chips or Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chips

1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.

2. Spray cookie sheet with PAM (remember NOT PAM for baking, it has flour. Original and the others are safe.)

3. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons full on baking sheet two inches apart. (Cookie scoops work well also.)

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on whether you want chewy or slightly crispy cookies.

5. Remove from oven. Allow to set 3 to 5 minutes before removing to cooling rack or plate with spatula.

6. After that, taste one of those babies! Fresh hot chocolate chip cookies are so good right out of the oven! Repeat until dough is used up.

Jerry, you are special. You are the only person I have EVER shared my secret recipe with. Please keep away from the gluteny goodies. Remember, gluten = poison. Please don't poop to death, we would all miss you! :P

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

This is my favorite part of the recipe- eat out of bowl until dough is used up!

Yes, but weren't those runs more challenging when you had to plot out a course that included an easily accessible restroom every quarter mile ;)

Congrats dude, keep up the good work!! B)

Actually on numerous occasions it was a strategically placed wooded vacant lot or something. Not that I'm particularly proud of this <_<

Dear JerryK,

That is not too surprising, actually. Anxiety disorders are even linked to gluten. It may be some of my mother's trouble. This affects you on so many levels, and the changes the diet brings are often surprising. You never realize how psychologically and physically tortured you can be by food sensitivities or Celiac. Way to go! Keep up the good work! :)

Dear Mtndog,

 Yep, pooping to death is bad! As far as the cookies go, I love to get them fresh baked right out of the oven! They are so good! I usually eat four at a time, which is not healthy! However, I have a low fat recipe that is so good, and my best friend gave me the idea. I just replace the shortening and the margerine with an 8oz. container of Cool Whip Free, and use Splenda for baking instead of the granulated sugar, and they are great! My best friend taught me how to make these great cookies several years ago where you take any cake mix and add 1 egg and the Cool Whip, then roll it in a ball with 2 teaspoons, roll in some confectioner's sugar, then bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, and they are so good! Since Cool Whip is low in fat, that makes it better! You get to eat more! :P

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

I had to eventually eliminate coffee - but can still have a chai latte at Starbucks (with soy - I also have casein sensitivity), and that seems to be okay (Thank god for still being able to have caffeine in some form).

I'm also a nurse, but one who has worked in chronic care, and to some extent, it is more satisfying to see patients through to a diagnosis (as opposed to working in the ED), but an accurate diagnosis does not occur not as often as it should! Your posting presents a lot of information. But a couple of things I can respond to. One, celiac disease is diagnosed by endoscopy and biopsy of the duodenum. So, pathology will need to weigh in. It's not diagnosed on gastroscopy. (At least, not as far as I know). Two, did you get blood tests for celiac disease? You will need to be eating gluten in order for those to be accurate. Three, where was the CT angiogram (of what)? I could go on and on, but thought I'd start there.
    • trents
Was a biopsy done when you had your gastroscopy? Concerning your anemia, are you B12 deficient? It's nearly impossible to get sufficient B12 if you are a vegetarian unless you take supplements.
    • Suzi374
And I’m anaemic, however I’m also female and vegetarian. I had an iron trans a couple of years ago however it’s starting to dwindle and taking supplements doesn’t seem to work. I can’t seem to absorb it.

Hi, I attended a neurologist appt last Tuesday, which I nearly cancelled, due to ongoing numbness and tingling in toes to mid foot. One of the first things he asked was ‘are you celiac’. I’m not. He thought all reflexes were ok but at the last minute decided on nerve conduction tests which were low normal. He was a little confused as he felt they should be better and tried a new set of probs, all the time, giving me multiple shocks which were not enjoyable lol. Anyway, he’s now ordered tests for myeloma, and all the vitaminy things that so many of you mention on here, also tests looking for autoimmune responses. I already have Hashimotos. Interestingly, to me, but maybe someone out there can relate or knows more than i do, although I was a nurse, but ED not ‘weird symptoms’  nurse. Anyway back to the interesting thing, I took duramine in 2013 to lose weight which caused a massive panic attack when I stopped taking it and half my hair fell out. I only took it for a week but it was horrible and I regret it. It triggered ongoing panic attacks which are horrendous. So I feel like I’m a bit crazy. Then in 2020 I had this sudden onset of horrible pain when trying to eat a cinnamon roll. It continued and I lost around 20 kgs. I had two gastroscopes and a colonoscopy and they were all normal. I scored a barium swallow and CT angiogram. All normal. The pain subsided a little but I was left with reflux and an awful feeling that I couldn’t get air when I ate some foods. This was not anxiety.  The anxiety was separate and I still maintain this. This was something to do with eating. It was like the air was thick but I wasn’t short of breath. I just had the sensation I was, then it triggered anxiety. Anyway, I had other weird things- couldn’t bend knees to shave legs in shower lol. Knees felt stiff and swollen but they weren’t. Knee WOUld swell up randomly but mri showed minimal issues. A bit of a meniscus degeneration but insignificant. Then the buzzing sensations in my head, the feeling like someone was stabbing me with something sharp. So now, I pre empted his tests, although I don’t think I’m celiac because it should have come up on gastroscopy, I’ve gone off gluten. Since Tuesday last week so 9 days. Since then I don’t appear to be as constipated, I realised I got through today without a nap and I’m not tired, maybe it’s just today and not related but I get very tired normally and sleep straight after work often, I can bend my knees and shave my legs lol, the buzzing vibrating has gone from my head, I had to call and ambulance as my heart decided we were off on a run, but we weren’t running and I’ve been a bit twitchy at bed time when trying to sleep, reflux is improving, I did get the weird suffocating feeling a bit when eating today but not as bad normall. Tingling and numbness still present and I felt like it moved up my legs a bit today but I’m a bit jittery. So I don’t know if it’s celiac disease or a gluten intolerance but I think, and it may be wishful thinking because my symptoms do make life a bit challenging, but maybe I’m feeling better. I don’t feel as cloudy. My thinking feels crisper. Like there’s no buzzing and I’m not fighting to break through the cloudiness now. I hope so much that this may help me feel a bit better moving forward. It would be a miracle as I really have struggled to work and parent and keep the house clean and I’m always anxious and exhausted.  If you get this far, please tell me if you you can relate to any of the above. Oh and tonsils out 5 years ago but before that antibiotics multiple times a year, sometimes intramuscular because they were so bad.  Op was meant to take 30 mins, it took 1.5 hours due to size of them.
