I am on a newly gluten-free diet. I havent had my period for almost 5 months. I have always had irregular periods but i dont think this is okay. i called my ob/gyn and asked her and she said that it shouldnt be celiac, but i dont know if she knows about it. anyone have experience with this???

thanks!

I never have a period. About 4 years ago, when I was trying to get pregnant, I went of the birth control pill (which had always given me a regular period that lasted 1-2 days) and didn't have a period for 14 months. Had to go through various meds to get one and after one period I got pregnant. Then, after my baby was born, I think that's what really kicked of my celiac and I never had a period for 2 1/2 years after her birth, off and on the pill b/c my dr. thought that "might" help, but it didn't so I stopped taking it about 8 months ago and got pregnant without ever having a period! I don't know if this has anything to do with celiac or not, but no one has been able to figure my body out <_<

wow! i have been on the pill also, and that helped, but it gave me cramps sp badly i couldnt handle it. So much for "helping" with cramps. lol. I went on because i had my period for 90 days straight!!!! i obviously got really anemic and it is finally (we think) under control. it got so bad i had to have iron IV's bcuz i couldnt stomach oral iron! i wonder if part of not having my period has to do with having been so anemic...my body is confused!!! thanks for your reply!

Did you lose or gain a lot of weight? Estrogen is fat soluble and someone with either low or high body fat can have amenorrhea (lack of periods).

The birth control pill does not in any way help to regulate periods. The mechanism in the pill is to stop ovulation, which doesn't always work, so it also thickens cervical mucus to inhibit sperm migration and makes the uterus hostile to implantation of a conceived embryo. It makes you THINK it's regulating or causing periods because when you get off it for 7 days per month, you bleed, but it's not a true period. That's why there are pills that you can go for several months without a period.

You can get pregnant without having a period. Usually this happens after a birth. Every ovulation will have a period afterward, so you and your hubby are batting 100 on this! At least you're getting every egg you do ovulate! ;):P

Sounds like your doctor was as stupid as mine was. My periods stopped before I hit forty, I started having hot flashes etc. and asked to be tested to make sure my body had not hit an early menapause. My doctor insisted that it wasn't possible because of my age. To make a long story short it was celiac that caused my reproductive system to shut down, it also caused me to take almost 10 years TTC before my first child was born. After I was finally diagnosed 5 years ago my OB-GYN said I might start menstrating again but for me it wasn't to be. It had just been too long. Hopefully this won't be the case for you. Have your doctor check your hormone levels to make sure this is not an early menapuse. Insist on it.

when I first went on the gluten free diet, I first had periods too frequently for the first two months. Then, I didn't have it for three months...I think It was the sudden change in diet.

up until I started the diet I basically would have 1 or maybe 2 a year, since being on the diet (about 4 months or so) I have already bypassed my "norm"

My guess is that it will differ for everyone.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
