What Does It Mean?

Jeff and Lisa

Jeff and Lisa Newbie

I regularly browse through here since my almost 6 year old has Celiac and this forum has been quite helpful. Now it's my turn. In November, I had a celiac blood test done. The results showed they had only tested for IgA, Serum and the number was ~470. The upper limit was 300. I had an endoscopy done with 7 biopsies all of which came back negative. I did not eliminate gluten from my diet as I pondered the results and did some research. I went back last week and had the Endomysial IgA, tTG IgA, and IgA, Qn, Serum done again. The EMA and tTG came back negative and the IgA Qn Serum was once again 494 on a scale of 70-400. The doctor said they had switched labs. The doc told me no celiac since the EMA and tTG came back negative and my November biopsy was negative. He said to "cut back" on gluten not "cut out". I don't think a little gluten is a good thing if there is an actual issue. Anyone have any idea what just an elevated Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum level might mean?

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff, all my blood tests and endoscopy were negative. I cut out gluten anyway to see what my dietary response was. I do much better off gluten and will have a reaction even with a little bit of contamination.

You are having an immune reaction to gluten. I would try the diet and see what happens. Cutting back does no good, unless you don't have an intolerance, then you would probably benefit from cutting back (because I think everyone would, it's just hard to digest).

Jeff, I agree with Carla. Try the diet and see if it makes a difference. You're obviously reacting to gluten, and even with biopsies taken from seven spots the damage could have been missed.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
