Hi! I was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease. I have been my whole life diagnosed as someone with IBS. As you can imagine, it is very uspsetting to find out that you have been suffering so long and taking meds you don't need.

at any rate, my main symptoms where gas and bloating. when i cut out wheat, it dramatically went down, which is great. however, sometimes i still get bloated and i don't know why. i am only 1 and a half months into the gluten-free diet, but is it normal to still have a lot of gas? is there anything i can take to reduce it. i have tried gas-x and it doesn't work. nothing seems to work.

this is a really embarrassing problem so any advice is appreciated! sorry if i grossed you out!

Hello Texas and welcome to the board.

It takes time to heal, just as you have many years of discomfort and damage. Some see an immediate response to the diet and others like myself took several months.

The gluten free diet encompasses many things including wheat. Rye, Malt, Barley and most Oats all must be excluded from your diet.

The tricky part is that gluten is everywhere from lipstick, balms, lotions, shampoos, soy sauce and even some orange juices...places that you would never imagine.

You cannot heal unless you remove all sources of gluten. The learning curve is very steep, as others have said, but it is very doable.

Once you remove all the gluten from your diet, you will notice an improvement. But it takes patience and diligence.

Keep reading these posts, you'll learn more than anywhere or from any one.

Edit: in addition, you might want to elliminate diary from your diet for a while.

oh my gosh! thank you for all your help. i had no idea though that i had to eliminate all the stuff from my shampoo to lipstick?!???? you have got to be kidding me. is there any lipstick i can wear? what shampoos can i use? i had no idea! how does the gluten seep from your head or skin into your intestines? i am confused. this is really strange! thank you in advance for all your help!

did anyone else have embarrassing gas with their celiac disease prior to the gluten free diet?

Yes ma'am, gas is a very common side effect of gluten intolerance. It will go away, trust me, when you eliminate all the gluten from your diet. This is a very free speaking board. We talk about describing our stool size and shape and texture, and proud when they are normal looking. A strange bunch we are, but also with a common bond. So feel free to talk about farts and poops. :P , we have all been there.

To answer your questions:

Shampoo can get into your mouth during a shower. A lower risk, but still a risk. Dove Products are pretty good . A few do react to topical gluten products.

Lipstick, ingested - I use Burt's Bees and SOME Clinique.

The key to getting well Texas, is learning to read lables and calling companies to insure that their products are gluten free. But, we can get you over the hump regarding gluten free products while you are learning the ropes.

Several people here have a list of companies that will alway list gluten in their ingredience list... Kraft, ConAgra...are great companies.

Jin (NoGluGirl) will arrive shortly and give you a wonderful list of gluten free products.

Yup, Celiac is a reality check. But trust me, it gets easier and soon it will become second nature, but only after you power punch the oak tree in the back yard. There is an emotional process here.

Are you still eating dairy? A lot of us are temporarily lactose intolerant. It always gives me gas and bloating, for sure. Or, you could have other food allergies. You may want to check into that as well...

I will second that! After being gluten for the first two weeks I felt great. I then noticed that dairy would really do a number on me, gas and bloating is putting it mildly, it was horrible. Once I stopped dairy I was pretty much ok. Some types of oils that chips are cooked in can be problematic like cottonseed oil. Narrow your diet down to things that don't bother you and then slowly add back in items and see if they cause a problem. It is a long and tedious process. Feeling better is worth it. I have been gluten free for 13 weeks. It does get easier!
