Slightly Protruding Rib

I have noticed that on my left hand side, one of my middle ribs protrudes further out than the other right. I am trying work out what could be causing this. I want to rule out problems with my stomach if possible. My stomach did tend to get bloated when eating gluten but reduced alot now i am off it. I wonder if this bloating could be pushing the rib out. i know it sounds strange as its only one rib.

Anyone heard of this, should i visit the doctor or chriopracter do you think? :rolleyes:

I wouldn't think bloating would cause that, especially if it a rib higher up like that where you are getting above the stomach into the lung area. But who knows?

Could you be developing some scoliosis? Leaching of calcium from the bones due to mal absorption of minerals from your celiac disease might cause this as the vertebra become misshapen and the spine begins to twist and curve. I myself have developed both kyphosis and a little scoliosis. Have you had a bone density scan done?

Leaching of calcium from the bones due to mal absorption of minerals from your celiac disease might cause this as the vertebra become misshapen and the spine begins to twist and curve. I myself have developed both kyphosis and a little scoliosis. Have you had a bone density scan done?

This is the first response I have written on this site, so hopefully I am responding in the right place. I may be experiencing the same problem and my immediate assumption was that it was associated with my work out routine, but my sister and mother think I should see my physician about it. Could you tell me if this left rib is hurting?

This is the first time I've visited this site but I'm astounded at how many things I've noticed we all have in common already.

I have a protruding rib on my right side but I saw a chiropractor about for several years without much help. A year ago I visited a physical therapist who found out that one leg was actually about 3/4" shorter than the other which caused many structural problems including the protruding rib. Of course, I can't say if you would have anything similar, but I've gotten orthotics (that fit in my shoes) that correct the leg shortness and the rib has gotten much better.

This was my first thought too: scoliosis. My husband has this....ribcage chest is crooked....one side is more pronounced or higher than the other, and when you examine his back, it's crooked in the same shape. This got more pronounced as he lost more weight and muscle across his chest and back. Perhaps you have always had it, but never noticed for the same reason?

Additionaly, I believe my husband has Marfan's syndrome which is another auto immune condition and one of the markers is a crooked chest.....long lanky limbs (think President Lincoln).

Weird - my left rib sticks out too. So far as I can remember, it always has, although it was not as noticeable 40lbs ago. :lol: I went to a chiropractor last year who said I had some scoliosis; and a bone density scan a few months ago showed borderline osteopena (sp?) I never figured either could have anything to do with the rib, though. Interesting...

Mine does the same. Every doctor I've talked to (and I've had quite good luck with my doctors) have said that it may be quite normal - we're not actually symmetric). It is still there after correcting what it essentially a leg length difference (it's in the pelvis, not the leg, but it's effectively the same thing by the time you get to my sacrum) and realigning my spine. It may not be a problem at all.

    • How do you know what's causing what?
      I am in same boat, yesterday my stomach was churning and bloated and I don't know what the cause was.  How about keeping a food diary? Just note what you ate and how you feel. A few days may be sufficient to discern a pattern, either some rogue product or a previously unknown intolerance. I have read that after gluten is removed further intolerances which were hidden can become apparent.  I don't know whether you could cut yourself some slack from a full vegan approach whilst your body heals? If not, maybe you could substitute say milk with coconut milk or similar to give your body a break whilst keeping calcium levels high? If you join coeliac uk you can check your sauces etc on their gluten-free database, they'll also send you a book which became my bible until I got a hang of which brands I could eat safely. Finally, have you excluded cross contamination from pots and pans, toasters, shared condiments etc?  Good luck!
    • Blood results - odd
      My results were similar – Low ferritin but normal B12. Although my ferritin levels were low, my Iron serum levels were normal. So might be worth getting your iron levels checked out to see if you have any deficiency in Iron. Also I was deficient in Vitamin D, which is perhaps more of a problem in England rather than the US - Our milk isn’t supplemented with vit D and we obviously have less sunshine.

      Hi Kam, If you are going to continue the celiac testing with an endoscopy, you need to keep eating gluten until it's done.     • Blood results - odd
      Your ferritin was very low!  My result was a 2 when I was diagnosed.    I hard a hard time breathing and the fatigue was awful due to low hemoglobin levels.  But after going gluten free and taking iron for a few months, I quickly recovered from iron-deficiency anemia.  I still have hemologobin levels that are slightly below range due to Thalassemia which is genetic and my body has adjusted for it.   My B12 and folate levels are  super high.  My B12 is over 2000!  Yeah, I googled and ruled out cancers, etc.  Looks like some of us do not process man-made B12 often included in supplements.  I opted for natural sources of B-12 and folate and my levels have come down a bit.   Let us know your results.  Read the Newbie 101 section under "Coping" within this forum for tips.   Be patient.  It can take months, to years to feel good.  But it will happen!

      Welcome to the forum!   Well.....in theory you should be able to heal within a few months (grow new villi, etc.).  The reality is that it takes so much longer -- like a year or two (I kid you not!)  Why?  celiac disease can damage more than just the gut.  Depending on what was damaged (nerves, bones, etc) can impact healing time.  The gluten-free diet has a very steep learning curve.  It's not just giving up gluten.  It's avoiding cross contamination.  Becoming an expert in reading labels.  Learning to avoid foods processed on shared lines in a facility.  Then there are intolerances that most celiacs develop.  The most common ones is lactose.  Why?  The villi tips release the enzymes to digest lactose.  No villi tips?  Then you can not digest lactose.  Often this is temporary, but if you are one of the many adults in this world, you might already be lactose intolerant or might become so as you age.   Other intolerances that members often report include corn or soy.   Some celiacs react to oats, even gluten free.  So avoid oats for six months.  So, try cutting out dairy for a few days and see how you feel.  Then add in those items that have the least lactose:  hard cheese, butter, yogurt and see how you feel.   Avoid eating out for six months until you have seen some improvement.   Read our Newbie 101 thread under coping for more ideas!  Hope you feel better soon.
