hello,

i attend fsu and saw that a number of people are in the tallahassee area with celiac/gluten sensetivity, etc... i was wondering about maybe start meeting once a month/week to share knowledge, tips, restaraunts, etc... or if this exists already, when and where?

and im not sure if its new, but the Health Food store on capital circle (near centerville/miccosoukee) specializes in gluten free products and are really friendly. went there today.

if interested, reply, or send me an email.

thanks,

-andy.

I go to FSU too!!! But I am a grad student as and the week progresses I am slowly seeing all prospect of any kind of life outside school slipping away! Do you happen to mean the health food store on Appalachee? I'm not sure there's one on Captial Circle but I could be wrong.

Hey im at FSU too!!!!

I would love to get together with people!! I actually didn't have class today and went on a health food store hunt. I was sort of disappointed with the one on appalachee. They didn't have Amy's pizza or annies macaroni and cheese. I went to two others (i couldnt tell you where they were) and there wasn't too much there either. You will have to let me know where that health food store is..or the name or something so I can get directions. Because I am definitly running out of my stock I brought from home.

yeah, im hoping we can get enough interest sparked to set a regular time/date. maybe even have enough of an impact to get local grocery stores to at least acknowledge it!

but the health food store info is:

1989 capital circle n.e., suite 12

850-671-1452. its in a shopping center called (something) oaks shopping plaza. coming from campus, take tennessee towards monroe. left on capital circle, when you pass a large lake on your right, its the shopping center right afterwards. enjoy!

I believe that you can add one more FSU Gluten Intolerant to the list! :P

I certainly did not know about that health food store, so I think I shall check it out when I'm not so worried about parking here. Thanks for the heads up! And I also second the notion of Celiac/Gluten Intolerant group meet ups. If anything, it might possibly squash the internal feelings that "I'm the only Celiac/Gluten Intolerant around" that each of us may have. ^^

I am most certainly having issues with Gluten-Free supplies around here myself. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the selection of Gluten-Free stuff in the General Grocery Stores. I already know that the noodles made primarily with Corn Starch, that Publix has in the Green Section, will not hold together very well. Currently I am having my parents order the supplies I need online or buy them in Ohio since Celiac awareness is much greater there, and then ship those supplies to me. I don't even try to eat out here anymore.

But yes, I personally encourage Celiac/Gluten Intolerant group meets! And who knows, we all might figure something out. :)

Hey, so literally two hours before you posted this message, I was having a phone conversation with my mom about how I was running out of food and couldn't find my usual products at New Leaf and how I was having a hard time eating places and stuff like that..So my mom sent out a message to her little email group asking if anyone knew anything about Tallahassee, she got replies from 3 different people so far, all with daughters at FSU. I can tell my mom to let them know as well.

oh and just so you know..they all pretty much said the same things we have. not many options...New Leaf just OK...

I believe that this year at FSU will be rather interesting! And another note about the possible future meetings, I have classes pretty much all day on Tues and Thursday this semester. Every other day, I pretty much have nothing else to do, unless there is further notice about that.

...I'm getting hungry again LOL! I wish I had my noodles right now, because Tuna and Cheese Corn Flour Burritos gets old fast (and after I'm done microwaving them, they don't look like burritos anymore, hahaha!).

Is New Leaf the one on Apalachee? Because the one on Apallachee has Tinkada noodles.

Yes, It had some stuff, and I could get by on it i guess, but I was still a wee bit dissappointed and hoping to find another one that had maybe a few more options. I had every intention of trying the one on capitol circle today because I didn't have class, but unfortunatly the laziness in me took over and I haven't gone yet. I sent emails to two girls moms at FSU(because that is the only email I have for them, and interestingly enough one of their moms emailed me back saying that her daughter had just learned about someone else with celiac from one of her professors.

I believe there is also a professor on campus who has either family with it or he has it. Back when we were first looking at housing a professor in charge of one of the living learning communities called my house and my mom talked to her and was telling her how we weren't sure if I could happily live on campus. The professor went on to tell my mom who the professor was and even called back the next day to tell her his experiences on campus. Maybe I can get his name....

Hey Guys!

My mom just emailed me this site and so I thought that I would catch up... Im a junior at fsu and have been living on campus the whole time.

Thought that I should tell you that I worked at Fresh Food for about 8 months and they have pots pans utensils and some pasta I think if you ever wanted to go and eat there. They know how to cook *hopefully* cause I was there, but definetly talk to the manager about it because they should know.

I haven't been to any of the health food stores around here though, so I dont know how good/bad they are. Im from Upstate NY and they really knew how to do things gluten-free... wish that they had that here. Umm lemme think...

Oh so I think that having a meeting would be awesome.. and then we'd all get to know each other.

If you need I have menus on my computer for places that are gluten-free restaurants... like Moes, Outback, Bonefish Grill, and Chilis.... so if you ever wanted to go to those places they have gluten-free food!

Im pretty sure thats about it

Thanks for whoever started this up

Meg

im really happy to see theres interest! i did some research online and appearantly theres a resource person for gluten living in tallahassee but neither number, nor her assistants worked. but regardless, i am going to go visit the health store around eleven tomorrow to speak with the manager about a first meeting. im going to try and say next sat/sun (stores closed sunday but we could meet elsewhere) and he could give us a little lecture about how he got started and maybe a quick walk through of the store. then everyone would know where the store is and the owner!

but i was thinking today, if we start a group, we could have a guest speaker from fsu/tall regional come and talk/dine with us. and definately a potluck where everyone brings an item and a recipe so theres no confusion and everyone leaves with knowledge! eventually, maybe a fundraiser? t-shirts, etc.... baby steps....

so let me know how next weekend is for everyone and then we can spread the word.

I live in tallahassee too. I go to TCC. I tried the gluten-free diet for 5 months and still felt bad so I quit it. I havent been on this board for a while...seems alot more people from tallahassee have joined since I left. I am thinking of starting the diet again...Im just dreading it. Well, I just wanted to say hi to my fellow tally ppl. I know the suffering of the gluten-free diet..and Ive lived here my whole life so I pretty know where everything is if you have any other questions about stores with gluten-free products and restuarants with gluten-free menus.

Hi all -

My in-laws live in Pensacola (not too far away from Tallahassee, from what I hear) and we eat at The Fish House frequently. They're awesome about accommodating me and the food is to die for. Just FYI in case you all wanted to take a trip over here. :)

to emcaster: my grandma lived in pensacola, the fish market is by that newer housing development there is it not?

anyways, meg brought up a good point: the football game! ill be going to that, and i guess taylor said she would be out of town in a previous post so.... yeah. im glad that so many people have checked out the health food store. so i definitely think we should hold our first meeting there. and since there are a number of you here, im thinking we should attempt to meet there next weekend.

anyone have a preference or previous engagement for fri-sun?

let me know, and feel free to share any other thoughts or ideas.

-andy.

p.s. - is it possible to get a cider keg for a pregame? ...scratch that, we'd all have sugar shocks or crash around the third quarter.

Next weekend is a lot better for me. I

t is so weird coming here because everybody i meet seems to know someone with it. So unless I just happen to meet people that know one of you, there are a bunch of others here that we don't know about. I also found out that the Professor my mom heard about has like..a wife and a daughter with it..hes one of the heads of the school for education or something. But I also heard yesterday about math professor that has it.

oh..and does anyone have a facebook?..haha

I have facebook! Where can I find you Taylor?

Also ReneCox I know how it is to have to do the whole diet thing for a few months and still not feel the best... ya just have to keep at it and you'll start to feel better... it normally takes a few months to get your villi back.

think thats all!

GO NOLES!!! :D

So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.

Has anyone experimenced enlarged lymph nodes with celiac? Both in the neck and groin area. Imaging of both areas have said that lymph nodes are reactive in nature. However, they have been present for months and just wondering how long this may take to go down. Been gluten-free for about two months. Blood counts are normal.
    • Kmd2024
Hmm interesting I just assumed that any “IGA” tests including the DPG iga would be negative in a person who is IGA deficient but maybe that is not the case for the DPG test.

If you were just diagnosed I can say that if you go 100% gluten-free should should see dramatic improvement of your symptoms over the next few months, but the hard part is to stay gluten-free. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
