How Fast Can A Reaction Occur After Consuming Gluten?

I had tortilla chips yesterday and within a few minutes I started reacting. I'm only just learning that even corn chips can have hidden gluten (I'm newly diagnosed), but to have a reaction so quickly seems a little unreal. Is that possible?

Thanks!

*Generally* Celiac has always been regarded as a "delayed" reaction. But many on this board report immediate or fairly immediate responses. I think there is no real standard. Within 20 minutes seems common. I'm sure others out there will be able to give you their own "glutening schedule". :P Some may be within a minute, others may be within hours. Some people react instantly, as soon as it touches their mouth (I suspect they must have a wheat allergy).

I personally react within minutes with a full blown reaction. I have had delayed reactions as well, but they are not common and I have no idea why those particular reactions were delayed (i.e. 3 hours later). I also was just diagnosed with an IgE wheat allergy on top of Celiac, which in my case may explain my "severe" reaction. I may also be a "sensitive "Celiac as well.

That said, you *do not* need to have a wheat allergy on top of Celiac in order to have an immediate and severe reaction, but if you do, it might be worth having allergy testing. If positive, you may need to carry Benadryl and an Epipen just in case.

Take care! :)

Hi,

I personally don't begin to react for about 2 hours or so. :)

It's highly individual, though. I've read here of people reacting right away, and others a day or more later.

My mouth gets irritated after about half an hour. After that, I get a series of GI symptoms.

In some instances, I've noticed my stomach burning within just a few minutes. However, 20-30 minutes is the norm for me. Recovery time can be anything from a few hours to a couple of days. Depends on the severity.

What kind of oil were the chips fried in? Gluten usually hits me in about 20-30 minutes. Cottonseed oil gives me the same reaction, at least it feels like it. Cottonseed oil is used in a lot of things, there may something in the chips apart from gluten that you don't tolerate. Once I went gluten free I became much more sensitive to foods.

Yes, I'm finding this, too... especially with dairy. I'm not sure what the chips were cooked in, but I've checked with the manufacturer and the chips are not on their gluten-free list, so gluten is possible. It's good to know that there might be other explanations than just gluten and I will definitely pay close attention to cottonseed oil. Very interesting! Thanks!

I have this with chips, too. Everytime I go to El Belazo and get their chips...thinking they are okay, I wake up with the worst left-sided pain the next day. And I'm always nauseated in the morning. Also, I'm wondering about something else you all said...."once you went gluten-free, you developed many more sensitivities." Why is this? There are so many things I cannot tolerate now. While a lot of my gastro symptoms went away, I have others that came and others that just linger and linger and linger. Does anyone have any good articles or knowledge about why this is?

Hi all,

I'm 2yrs Totally Gluten Free, I recently 'Glutened' myself rather stupidly,

last Thursday evening i was shopping in my local Supermarket with a neighbour and there was

sampling of smoked salmon on brown bread.

.

My neighbour sampled some from the plate and said it was lovely,

when the lady asked me would I like to try,

I explained that I was Coeliac and couldn't eat anything with gluten in it.

.

She said my nephew is Coeliac, I know you can eat the smoked salmon,

just sample that, so she cut a large piece of salmon lifted it up on the knife and i eat it.

.

It was only then I noticed that was the same knife she used to spread and cut the bread !!

I thought to myself, it can't possibly do much harm,

.

'BOY WAS I WRONG'.

.

Within 4 - 5 hrs I had severe cramping and then the big 'D'

I had it all day Friday and most of Saturday and I was afraid to leave the house,

even though i'd taken 'Imodium Tablets'.

.

This is one guy who won't sample at the Supermarket again.

.

Best Regards,

David

I suspect that I've had my other sensitivities all along, but could never distinguish them because gluten was so pervasive in my diet and I was constantly having problems. I wonder, though, if htere is more to it....

Were they tostitos? I don't know how many people know this, but Tostitos can have CC. Because of those new "Multigrain" chips. <_< not fun. My mom found that out a few months ago. They won't SWEAR that their products are gluten-free. *eyelidtwitch*

My reaction usually starts about 2 hours after eating offensive foods. The effects usually last 24 - 48 hours. I've spent whole weekends recovering from a Friday night glutening. Yuk.

It usually takes at least two days fo rme to react, as far as I can tell, and itlasts from 2 weeks to a month depending on how much gluten I got.

Indeed, dairy is tough, I had to go dairy free as well as gluten free. It's been 7 months and I still cannot handle dairy.

Here we go...I FINALLY found someone who gets mouth irritations!!! Can you please tell me what happens to your mouth?

what kind of mouth irritations do you get? I have been gluten-free for almost 2 weeks (still eating some by accident i think) and the last couple days i have 1) been soooo hungry and 2) my mouth feels really sensitive. you know when u eat heaps of salty or sugary things and your tongue feels sensitive and your teeth feel razor sharp on your tongue? its been like that for days but i havent been eating anything that would normally cause it.

btw this forum has been so helpful to me in the last few weeks. i was only diagnosed about 6 weeks ago, had the biopsy to confirm 2 weeks ago and am struggling with the new gluten free life! its very isolating hey? luckily friends family and workmates are being understanding, and theres a lot of info out there.

My son and I both get the mouth irritations, sometimes within 5 minutes (Have to check into the allergy part...I am allergic to grass and hay.)

I do get mouth ulcers after glutening, but usually a day or two later. I got them for years, pre-diagnosis, and thought they were "normal". Now I don't get them unless I've been glutened.

I'm so sorry. That's an incredible amount of time. It's too bad those who see gluten-free as a 'diet choice' don't realize how serious this is.

I glutened myself last week, i read the hot dog chili sauce can 2 times, didn't see anything that i was familiar with, btw i've only been gluten free for a month and a half, so i put a drizzle of chili on my hotdog, about 30 minutes later, i could feel my head fogging up, then the migraine started, i got real tired..it only lasted that evening, thank god, but boy did i no i ate something i shouldn't have. so i went and pulled the can out of the trash..and there it was in plain sight, FLOUR. So now i have my husband read ingrediants to me out loud LOL.

My mouth irritations:

I have this irritating pain in my mouth...mostly the sides of my tongue, mid-tongue and the roof of my mouth. I have been treated for Thrush because the dr said, "just in case." Well, I did NOT have thrush...this was 2 years ago. I have continued to have a chronically annoyed and sore tongue.

I have gone gluten free for awhile now, and there are some days when "mysteriously" my tongue is better. Most days, though, still annoyed. Does this sound like your tongue?

Do you have any other symptoms? Were you checked for Pernicious Anemia or a dietary B12 deficiency (this can be treated with oral B12, whereas PA requires B12 injections for life). A sore, "beefy" tongue is a common symptom.

Do you regularily replace your toothbrush? Did you replace your brush as soon as you were treated for "thrush"? Do you drink a lot of sodas?

Do you have sores, itchiness, etc, in your throat or aside from your tongue? If you've had unprotected oral sex, did your doctor screen you for oral STI's? They happen! :o

Of course, it could just be plain old allergies....but it doesn't really sound like it. Is there swelling? Or maybe a really stubborn yeast infection, or you may have unknowingly reinfected yourself. Or, good old irritation from acidic foods, etc.

Hmmm....this is a good one! Time to call House! ;) Lol!

I don't know about anyone else, but I ate some gluten containing foods the other day and my mouth has several small ulcers.. Usually they are on the inside of my cheeks. Today they are on the inside of my mouth just under my lips. They are only small, but they hurt a lot. Especially tonight as I ate at a hotel and they mistakenly served me worcestershire sauce, instead of balsamic vinegar.

I also get mouth, or should I say tongue, irritations. I have a geographic tongue and when I get a trace amount of gluten - such as second hand beer from kissing, my tongue gets circles and ridges and it is tender. This is always my first and sometimes only sympton of being glutened.

I like all of the questions you pose.

Yes, of course I have other symptoms. I used to have a ton of alternating C&D. Then, when I went gluten-free, that went away. Yesterday I hit a huge wall of being fatigued...my body gets like a deadweight...this is occassionally. If I know I've been glutened I will get dizzy and right eye twitches and just not feel right. BUT....all of this resolves generally EXCEPT for the mouth.

I am not anemic. Never been check for PA. I do switch toothbrushes frequently. I do not drink soda...except for when I drink, which is about once every other week and consists of Vodka/Sprite.

I do not have sores, itchiness, ect in my throat. Well, my throat has been burning for the past few days, but I overall feel crappy. I actually had my tonsils removed about 3 years ago. I had them removed because I had chronic tonsillitis...so them and my adenoids came out. It was shortly after they came out that the tongue/mouth thing started happening. This is not from an STI...no oral sex here recently AND there is nothing VISIBLE in my mouth. When I was younger I used to get cracks in the corners of my mouth and more canker sores....that was like in High School and early college.

My tongue does not swell. The Densist said my mouth/tongue looks normal...and that's who first brought it to my attention about the food allergies. Here is a typical day of food for me:

(I don't change it much) If you see any QUESTIONABLE things...let me know!

1. Gluten free apple sausage links from whole foods

2. Tofu

3. Apples w/ cinnamon

4. Starbucks light roast coffee

5. 2 packs splenda

6. Blue Diamond Almond milk vanilla unsweetened

7. tuna

8. lettuce

9. brocolli

10. cauliflower

11. carrots

12. quinoa

13. olive oil

14. flax seed oil

15. pear

16. grilled chicken

17. strawberries

18. brussel sprouts

19. small red beans

20. burts bees chapstick on lips

22. vitamins, which are all gluten-free

I'm seriously going nuts with my mouth. It makes me frustrated and want to cry.

If anyone else wants to comment...please feel free to chime in!!!

And I’m anaemic, however I’m also female and vegetarian. I had an iron trans a couple of years ago however it’s starting to dwindle and taking supplements doesn’t seem to work. I can’t seem to absorb it.

Hi, I attended a neurologist appt last Tuesday, which I nearly cancelled, due to ongoing numbness and tingling in toes to mid foot. One of the first things he asked was ‘are you celiac’. I’m not. He thought all reflexes were ok but at the last minute decided on nerve conduction tests which were low normal. He was a little confused as he felt they should be better and tried a new set of probs, all the time, giving me multiple shocks which were not enjoyable lol. Anyway, he’s now ordered tests for myeloma, and all the vitaminy things that so many of you mention on here, also tests looking for autoimmune responses. I already have Hashimotos. Interestingly, to me, but maybe someone out there can relate or knows more than i do, although I was a nurse, but ED not ‘weird symptoms’  nurse. Anyway back to the interesting thing, I took duramine in 2013 to lose weight which caused a massive panic attack when I stopped taking it and half my hair fell out. I only took it for a week but it was horrible and I regret it. It triggered ongoing panic attacks which are horrendous. So I feel like I’m a bit crazy. Then in 2020 I had this sudden onset of horrible pain when trying to eat a cinnamon roll. It continued and I lost around 20 kgs. I had two gastroscopes and a colonoscopy and they were all normal. I scored a barium swallow and CT angiogram. All normal. The pain subsided a little but I was left with reflux and an awful feeling that I couldn’t get air when I ate some foods. This was not anxiety.  The anxiety was separate and I still maintain this. This was something to do with eating. It was like the air was thick but I wasn’t short of breath. I just had the sensation I was, then it triggered anxiety. Anyway, I had other weird things- couldn’t bend knees to shave legs in shower lol. Knees felt stiff and swollen but they weren’t. Knee WOUld swell up randomly but mri showed minimal issues. A bit of a meniscus degeneration but insignificant. Then the buzzing sensations in my head, the feeling like someone was stabbing me with something sharp. So now, I pre empted his tests, although I don’t think I’m celiac because it should have come up on gastroscopy, I’ve gone off gluten. Since Tuesday last week so 9 days. Since then I don’t appear to be as constipated, I realised I got through today without a nap and I’m not tired, maybe it’s just today and not related but I get very tired normally and sleep straight after work often, I can bend my knees and shave my legs lol, the buzzing vibrating has gone from my head, I had to call and ambulance as my heart decided we were off on a run, but we weren’t running and I’ve been a bit twitchy at bed time when trying to sleep, reflux is improving, I did get the weird suffocating feeling a bit when eating today but not as bad normall. Tingling and numbness still present and I felt like it moved up my legs a bit today but I’m a bit jittery. So I don’t know if it’s celiac disease or a gluten intolerance but I think, and it may be wishful thinking because my symptoms do make life a bit challenging, but maybe I’m feeling better. I don’t feel as cloudy. My thinking feels crisper. Like there’s no buzzing and I’m not fighting to break through the cloudiness now. I hope so much that this may help me feel a bit better moving forward. It would be a miracle as I really have struggled to work and parent and keep the house clean and I’m always anxious and exhausted.  If you get this far, please tell me if you you can relate to any of the above. Oh and tonsils out 5 years ago but before that antibiotics multiple times a year, sometimes intramuscular because they were so bad.  Op was meant to take 30 mins, it took 1.5 hours due to size of them.

Enlarged lymph nodes in neck and groin with celiac are not uncommon. They can take time to reduce even after going gluten-free. Monitoring is key.

Hello! I’m sorry in advance for the long post!   Over the past few months I’ve been having a lot of issues with my stomach and have recently been referred to a Gastroenterologist. I’ve had stomach pain and issues since I was a baby. I had bad constipation (still do) and couldn’t tolerate most formula as a baby. When I was around 8 I started experiencing a lot of lower abdominal cramping (just below the belly button) and ended up missing a fair amount of school because of this. It would start about 2 hours after eating breakfast and I’d have lower abdominal cramps and feel nauseous . After a visit to my family doctor it was brushed off as separation anxiety.. or as the doctor put it “I was just a kid who wanted to stay home from school”. This stomach pain persisted all through my elementary and high school years. In fact I still experience it to this day and I’m now 24. Along with this my doctor believes I have a form of disautonomia called POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). I frequently feel unwell and exhausted. I also experience Raynaud’s phenomena especially during the winter months or when I’m sick. I also can not tolerate heat for the life of me.. although I’m not entirely convinced my symptoms are from POTS. The last few years I’ve also started experiencing frequent chronic sinus infections up to 5 a year most of which I require antibiotics for… Up until two years ago I have never had allergies or sinus problems. Back to my stomach issues… The last year I have been experiencing lots of stomach bloating and discomfort especially at night.. this has led to a few nights of 3am vomiting.. my doctor tested me for H. Pylori which was negative as well as full work ups to test my kidneys, liver, pancreas, gallbladder.. all of which were normal. At this time he also started me on Rabeprazole 20mg twice daily which is a Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) … as he believes it could be GERD. The PPI has not helped at all and I have since been moved down to once daily which I wait for a referral to a Gastroenterologist for an endoscopy as well as an abdominal ultrasound to verify I have no gallstones.. The pain I feel in my abdomen feels very heavy right around my bellybutton and frequently is accompanied by nausea and occasionally I also experience sharp stabbing like pain left of my belly button. I began tracking my symptoms, what I’m eating and bowel habits on an app called “My IBS” which track’s symptoms and flags foods that could be potential triggers.. all of my flagged potential triggers seem to be gluten related foods like pasta and breads. I asked to be tested for Celiac as I have an uncle with it. My doctor only sent for TtG IGA.. no other tests. My results came back negative at “<0.5 U/ml” the reference range being “ <12 U/Ml”. I am aware that total IGA should of been ordered as well but my doctor is confident we have ruled out celiac so I guess I will have to wait for the Gastroenterologist for more testing.. The other red flag for me is I have a rash that shows on both my knees and recently I have developed a similar rash behind both of my ears, on my neck and into my scalp.. there is dozens of small red and skin coloured lesions that sort of? resemble pimples but have a “head” and don’t pop (yes, i know don’t pop your pimples!) they are also itchy and sore.. I have tried washing and scrubbing them with antibacterial soap and body wash to no avail as well as ensuring I rinse my neck thoroughly after a shower, keeping my neck dry, frequently changing pillowcases and even keeping my hair off my neck as much as possible … it doesn’t have any effect on it.  In your experience does this sound like I could be experiencing celiac? I’ve debated going gluten free to see if my symptoms persist or begin to clear up.. any suggestions or help is appreciated!
