When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease through a blood test and a biopsy I was told by the specialist "you have Celiac Disease you can't eat gluten" and that was basically it. I resorted to the internet to find out all the specifics that the Doctor failed to supply me with.
I was then sent to a Dietician only to find out that I knew twice as much as she did. She ended up asking me questions and if I could photocopy the information I had and give it to her... like are you friggin kidding me? haha.

I then later was frustrated and still had alot of questions so I went and saw my family Doctor who basically told me to go on the internet and find a Doctor or Dietician who knows something about Celiac Disease if I want information.

I'm feeling really frustrated at the fact that none of these "doctors" and "dieticians" have been able to provide me with any useful information!

I am looking for a Doctor or a Dietician in the Hamilton/Burlington/Toronto or surrounding area that could provide me with helpful information and answers to questions that I still have about my diet and my health.

I have learned alot on my own but I still have important questions.

Please let me know if anyone knows of anyone who would be able to help me out.

Thanks so much.

I'm not in that area, so I can't help with doctor's names. You could see if there's a local celiac support group or ROCK group - they might have some suggestions for you. Unfortunately your experience with a dietitian is a very common one. Most on this board have found that unless you live this everyday, it's impossible to really know everything that contains gluten. And many dietitians have very outdated information (like that you can eat the common brands of rice krispies and corn flakes - not true!) I usually ask all my questions on this board - if it's happening to me, odds are very good that someone else has had the same thing. I feel like I've got to be my own advocate and do my own medical research before I even go to the doctor.
Gluten-Free since September 15, 2005.
Peanut-Free since July 2006.

Hello All....

I have just joined Celiac.com.... My biggest reason is to find a Doctor in my area. My MD has never been good at supporting me in this disease, and he scoffs at me when I suggest things to him.. I was nearly unconcious, and severely toxic by the time he sent me for the necessary tests for my illness back in 1999. I've gotten along ok, but I find that malabsorption seems to be affecting different parts of me and I'm worried about the long term effects on me.

Can anybody please recommend a Doctor to me in the Toronto GTA area that I can approach, or even better have a recommendation for? I am going to keep searching in other ways too and will share with this board if I find Doctors.

Cheers, Linda.
