Eye Swelling/ Raccoon Eyes

Hey guys! I was just wondering if anyone has problems with facial swelling, particularly swelling around the eyes and nose? I've had that problem for almost a year now. And I also have sensitivity to light and dark dark circles around my eyes. I've been to several ENTs (ear, nose, throat doctors) all of which ruled out sinus problems. I have environmental allergies, and I know those can cause my symptoms, but even my allergy meds don't really seem to help. I wouldn't be too concerned but like I said I have had this problem for about a year. Any help would be appreciated!

I had the dark circles under my eyes until I went gluten-free and started taking multi vits. My boss mentioned that vitamin defeciensies can cause the dark circles!

I had dark circles and puffiness under my eyes for years. I even went to the eye dr concerned because my eyes felt "gritty" and I always looked very tired. I also cannot go outside without sunglasses because of sensitivity to sunlight. After going gluten free, I started absorbing vitamins and iron (was anemic) and my dark circles are gone. The puffiness went away after I began using "Refresh Tears" 2x a day for dry eyes. It is over the counter and helps with dry eyes. I would ask to have your iron levels checked as well as for other deficiencies. My symptoms were all nutritional deficiencies more than stomach problems.

Have you ever had your thyroid checked? Specifically checked for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis? That's what I have and it's an autoimmune disease. So, if you already have Celiac, you're prone to other autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto's. One of the symptoms of an unchecked and untreated Hashimoto's disease is facial swelling, specifically by the eyes. Ask your doctor for a thyroid panel!!

Sounds like you are in the UK. With blood numbers that high, I thought docs in UK would give an official diagnosis without the biopsy. You should ask about that, so you can get support faster.  I'd try to find and print out anything that supports that in your country, get another appointment and take all of it with you. Even in the US now, some docs are doing this, my 19 year old step granddaughter got an official diagnosis here in US with just blood results a few months ago.

Is soy sauce in Korea also made from wheat like it usually is in US? I'd be concerned that even if asking about gluten, they would not be aware of or think of some like that.

That's a good idea. It can at least establish the potential for developing celiac disease and can help people decided between a celiac diagnosis and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). And it doesn't require a gluten challenge and can be had without a doctor's prescription.

I have my endoscopy on Thursday, has anyone had the procedure done with a cough? I don't have a continuous cough, but every now and then throughout the day I have sort of coughing episodes. They are a lot better than they were but I called endoscopy and they said to speak to my gp and my gp got back to me and said I need to ask endoscopy if its ok if I have it done still.  Help!

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!
