A week ago Tuesday was my daughters 17 birthday. She wanted culver's frozen custard to go with her cake and we bought vanilla knowing it was gluten free for me. I've only been gluten free since January 4th and feeling pretty good but watching the dairy since I've read it would be a good idea to not have any at first. Anyway, I bought generic lactaid from safeway and took that right before eating the custard. 3 hours later I was vomiting. Since then, I've had a gluten free pizza with lightly sprinkled mozzeralla cheese and was fine (didn't do the lactose intolerance pill) but last night I made gluten free lasagna and took another one of those generic lactaid's and was vomiting within two hours! My question is do you guys think its the diary or maybe those lactaid pills. I know the lactaid brand name are gluten free but they were expensive and I bought the generic "compare to lactaid" ones. I wish I could give you the ingredients but hubby thinks they are the problem and threw them away this morning when the trash guys came? This is such a confusing illness!

The pills are most likely your problem, especially if they are chewable. The Lactaid brand caplets (not chewable) are gluten-free, but the tablets (chewable) aren't. The not ok ingredient on there is "starch"...which with drugs, can be corn OR wheat without them labeling it.

She's going to get tested.

Honestly I would just completely stay away from dairy right now. Your intestines are so sensitive right now and trying to heal, that you shouldn't do many modifications just to be able to eat something that isn't agreeing with you. Just completely stick away from dairy for the time being. In a few months, bring it back in little by little to see if you can tolerate it. I tried the Lactaid tablets at first so that I could eat frozen yogurt, and it still made me sick. So, since then I've cut out dairy completely and it helped. Lactaid milk is fine though! But keep a heads up.... since cutting out dairy as well as gluten, I've started to develop other food allergies, which is common for Celiac. Keeping a food diary daily always helps to quickly eliminate food that is making you sick! Good luck

Thank you for posting this. I too have recently become gluten-free (about 2 weeks) and just had a similar reaction to a meal involving a generic lactaid. It's strange because the ingredients don't show anything that I recognize as gluten-ish.. Here they are:
Microcrystalline cellulose, Polyalditol, Mannitol, Dicalcium phosphate, Crosprovidone, Magnesium stearate, Sodium citrate, Flavors, Sucralose
This was the 2nd meal with lactaid. With the first one I didn't throw up, but felt exhausted & mildly nauseated. I googled lactaid & vomiting, and found one instance besides your of vomiting.
What's puzzling to me about this is that vomiting doesn't seem like a plain old allergic reaction -- but I'm new to this, so I'm probably mistaken.
Is it true that your stomach becomes more sensitive shortly after stopping gluten? And that more food allergies are likely to develop? Geez, I'm having a hard enough time staying away from bread and brownies.
When I'm feeling better I'll post something about my experience, which is basically that after stopping gluten my LIFE-LONG depression lifted.

Thank you for listing the ingredients, my husband threw away the whole box the next morning. My bet is the "flavors". I haven't had any vomiting symptoms before with gluten mostly "D" so my feelings is that there must have been a good amount of gluten in these generic lactaids to set us off. Yes, you are more sensitive after stopping gluten. I used to be able to tolerate a little gluten and only had "D" when I overdid it but now that I'm totally gluten free, accidental ingestion will give me huge "D" then next morning. It's wonderful that your depression has lifted! Hang in there and post again when you feel better!

This may not be gluten related. I'm lactose intolerant and don't have a gluten allergy, but Lactaid has made me vomit. It is possible you are allergic to the type of mold used to produce the lactase enzyme. I've been searching around the internet for other cases of this, and while it is rare, it has happened. People have suggested that Lactaid Milk is fine, but the pills make them vomit.
