Few Product Questions

There are a few things that I have been wondering about regarding if they are safe for a gluten free diet:

Canola oil - is this okay to be in products?

Marvelon 28 - not sure if my birth control pills are okay? I tried emailing to company, and they have ignored me. They do list their ingredients in their pamphlet, and the seem okay?

Smuckers Jam - I like the no sugar added raspberry, but not 100% sure it is okay.

Tetly peppermint tea and green tea

What coffee is safe ( if not all )?

What peanut butter is safe?

What Kraft salad dressings are okay?

If you buy lean ground beef from the store, is this okay?

What are the best noodles to use ( easy to digest - will nto cause D or anything )

Any recomendations about flaxseed meal or aloe vera juice?

With eating rice crackers, rice cereal, rice for dinner etc, can you just plain ole be eating too mcuh rice for your system - are there any negative set backs?

Is there some that can be okay using the same toaster as " others " and not throwing away their old pots and such and not worrying too much about makeup??

and.....any reviews on luksusowa vodka? Good / bad / side effects, etc? What about Smirnoff?

Lol, sorry about the eighty million questions. I am just so new to this and have been feeling AWESOME, until this morning when ....things did not go well lets just say ( constant bathroom visits ). It is frusterating to have episodes like that!!!

So, one more question as I am thinking of how I felt this morning. Could accidental gluten intake cause upset stomach and constant wachrooms visits? How long do accidental gluten intake symptoms last?

Tues:

Breakfast - bananna, crispy brown rice cereal ( box says gluten free ), and silk low fat soy milk.

**Some people have problems with soy in general and some people when starting a gluten free diet have problems with dairy and/or soy.

dinner - rice express dish ( says on it gluten free, got at natural store ), bit of parmesean cheese and wheat free soy sauce on it, a chicken breast with BBQ sauce, salad that consisted of just lettuce, 1tsp of flaxseed meal, and kraft catalina dressing ( I am told this one is gluten free ).

**Some BBQ Sauces are not gluten free same thing with cheeses (we use Sweet Baby Ray BBQ sauce). In regards to the soy sauce if something is wheat free doesn't always mean it is gluten free (I don't use soy sauce).

Wed:

lunch - campbells healthy harvest clam chowder ( told gluten free ), salad with lettuce, baby corn, a few bean sprouts, tuna and a few almonds and zesty italina dressing ( told gluten free kraft ).

**In regards to Campbell Soups: If you e-mail then and ask for a list of gluten free items they will mail you a list. On their list I rec'd last month the only soup on it is Chunk Soup Chicken Broccoli Cheese 18oz and Select Soup Savory Lentil 190z. The soups that you are using I would re-look at the ingredients. Progresso labels gluten if it is present in the soup. Same thing with Kraft they are very good about labeling i.e. for your salad dressings.

dinner - rice pasta with organic spaghetti sauce and ground beef, 1tsp flaxseed meal, blue water salmon steak, and some peas

**Be careful with Organic items just because it is Organic doesn't always mean it is gluten free.

Here is a website that has companies that will list gluten ingredients if present:

Thanks muchly for your reply.

Hrrrmmm...while I know that I am lactose intolerant - hence the soy milk - I never did have problems with soy before. So, I could be sensative to it now that I have cut the gluten?? If so, what else do I use for cereal in the mornings?

I thought my BBQ sauce was gluten free, the only ingredient I questioned was vinager? But I am steering clear of it now, or at leats trying to find one that is labelled gluten free. And I didn't know that about the soy sauce - thank you. I just figured if it said " wheat free " it must mean safe for gluten intolerant peeps. Silly me :-)

Huh, I will have to email campbells for sure. A couple places on the net listed some Campbells soups that were good....but I should probably go straight to the source!

And for Kraft and salad dressings - by looking at the ingredients they LOOK okay...lol...I am just scared, hahaha. And yes, with the organic thing....I bought that the first day when I decided to start this and was just plain ole not thinkin......

Again tho, thank you for your reply.

FYI, these were the ingredients listed in the BBQ sauce.....seems okay to me?

Sugar, water, white vinegar, tomato paste, salt, modified corn starch, spices, smoke flavour, dehydrated onion and garlic, canola and/or soybean oil, citric acid, tamarind extract, caramel colour.

What brand BBQ Sauce do you have?

I know Jack Daniells BBQ is NOT gluten free. A lot of the Kraft ones are safe.

You have to be careful of vinegar -- you want it to say distilled vinegar. Some things that are smoke flavor are not safe but some are. I would call the 800 line on the bottle and ask them if that BBQ is gluten free.

If you are just looking for spaghetti sauce and don't care if it is organic. I like Classico -- All of their Red and White sauces are gluten free (as shown on their website).

About some of your other questions... Peanut Butter I use Skippy (says which ones are gluten free on their website). Noodles I like Ancient Harvest Spaghetti noodles and a lot of other people on here like Tinkyada. I personally have not tried it but I see it a lot on here. Jam I use Knott's Berry Farm (they will list gluten items). Salad dressing I like Wishbone, they are really good with labeling. Kraft I have recently started to try some just gotta read the label to make sure it is okay. About the toaster I know our toaster was not used that much and I am not overly sensitive like some people so we kept ours but if you used your toaster a lot with gluten bread I would get a new one for yourself.

I would recommend looking at websites of items you like. A lot of websites now will have a gluten free list (like Hormel) or some type of comment in the Frequently Asked Section about gluten. You can also e-mail or call companies. I was really nervous with this at first but it gets easier to call or e-mail after the first couple. You can also look up items on this website and most of the time you can see comments about the item. At first I was nervous with labels but from looking at what people say on here and then looking at the labels in the store I started to pick up on what I was looking out for etc.

Hope this helped some and good luck with everything :D

Thanks GlutenGalAZ!!

The brand of BBQ sauce I have is Presidents Choice, a generic brand sold at Superstore Canada. Thanks for the info and tomorrow when shopping I will have to take a look and see if I can try a better one. Or better yet, contact this one and ask. Lol, and your right, it does get easier to ask the more times you do it :-)

Yes, I do like Classico and did not know that they were safe. THANKS. That makes me very happy to hear.

*sigh*, I guess what I will do is just take another trip to the grocery store armed with lists and just check all the ingredient labels till I can find some good stuff :-) I am sure it will all get easier.

Thanks again

Here's a list of unsafe ingredients.

https://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsaf...ents/Page1.html

We can use lists and recommendations from others(including individuals and websites and groups) as a starting point but it is important that we still verify at the source, both reading the label and checking with the company, because product formulations can change with time and because there is some misinformation out there.

With companies like Kraft, just look for the words "wheat" or "barley" and if you don't see it, it's safe.

With other companies that don't have as good a voluntary policy of disclosing all gluten, you have to look for ingredients that could contain barley. The unsafe ingredient list will show you what those ingredients are. By law if any product has wheat in it it has to say"wheat" on the label.

Another thought, I was glutened by diamond nut thins. I know the box says gluten free but it also says processed in same facility as wheat etc. I am very sensitive and these got me. Don't know if this is the same brand you are using? Just a thought. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Kathy and yes, they are the blue diamond brand. The box even says produced in the same facility...etc.etc.

Silly me...so much for paying attention.

This one is the kicker....the rice cereal that I got I am pretty sure is what killed me. The box said wheat free, so I assumed it wasokay. Nope, what a dummy I was - the second ingredient in it is ' organic malted barley extract '.....

Okay, so apparently i am nto so good at this. Thing is tho, I was eating that cereal every morning - Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs.....and Monday I was a little naseaus, then Tues and Wed more ... the big C ( with dizziness and light headedness ), and then Thursday morning is when the big D happened.....is this a normal reaction when being glutened??

For Flax seed - I use Hodgson Mill, milled flax seed (It says gluten free on the box), I add to smoothies, bread mixes, even baked goods, u could even add it to cereal.

For Aloe Juice- I buy Aloe Life, the orange papaya concentrate (I emailed the company and they assured me they are gluten free) , order it from Lame Advertisement it really is the best aloe juice I've tried.

Hope this helps

Yes, most definately. Everyone is different but yours sounds glutening to me. I get gassy within a couple of hours of ingesting gluten then the big D within a day or two followed by the itchy rash. The light headedness and dizziness can also be from your accidental glutening possibly effecting your equalibrium. Toss the box and call it another thing learned! Mother Goose responded to someone once that "the learning curve is steep especially with beginners" and I think of that when I make a mistake and it always helps me realize that there is sooo much to learn and not beat myself up so much. Hang in there!

Lol, wow thanks Kathy. Such a big relief. oddly enough, to know that that reaction was most likely from being glutened and not that there is potentially something more wrong with me!! I will definately be throwing that box out and leanring my lession ( tho I REALLy did like the taste of those ). Lol, I will have to rememeber that Mother Goose quote! Thanks. Everyone has been such a big help.

and thanks helenabbadi for the flax seed and aloe brands that are safe. That is a big help.

Just another thought. If you are using Jam or other products that may have been used prior to your going gluten free, you may have some cross contamination issues in your jars/containers.

Also, there are some foods I eat that are stated "gluten free" like the ginger snaps from Trader Joe's or Lays potato chips, and I have to say, sometimes they bother me, and sometimes they don't. I just figure that there are some cc issues when these products are made on the same lines as wheat products. Just a guess... so I don't trust them, especially in the beginning.

When beginning to go gluten free it is up and down. I think my stomach was so much more sensitive the first 6 months or so to everything I ate. I cut out soy, dairy, potatoes, and caffeine. On one hand it is so great to feel so good for a change, but getting sick seems to wipe out any sense of feeling good. Hang in there, be diligent, and it will get better over time!

ksymonds84 - I have been eating Diamond Nut Thins like crazy!!!! I wonder if that's what is making me so sick! I recently discovered them and liked them so much I bought three boxes! I eat them everyday. I am so glad you posted that. I will stop eating them and see if I feel better.

I just wanted to add here that Campbell's US and Campbell's Canada have TOTALLY different gluten free listings.

One product may be gluten free in Canada, but not in the US....only to add to the confusion.

Hi Cindy,

Read your post, and I have also noticed with the Lays potato chips ( I was eating the classic original ) ones, and getting some negative reactions ( and they tasted sooo good )! Just wondering if you or anyone here has this more often than not? Another question to you and everyone, can you suggest a orange juice that has no cc, as I was trying out the Minute-Maid no pulp version and really think that I was glutened ( called the company and they stated that this particular one was not confirmed a 100% product, with a codex count of 200 ). Does anyone here have problems with products that have this type of uncertain guarantee with that kind of count? I would really like to have a "good" glass of orange juice. Thanks for your help Cindy and all. Sorry, but I would also like to ask about the cereal by Health Valley, Rice Crunch-Ems, has anyone had a problem with this? Thanks again!!

Best,

Susie

Amy,

It' sad because I do know other celiacs that can eat them with no problems but as I said, I am very sensitive. I've also found that I cant eat the regular big scoop fritoes, gives me gas everytime. The white corn scoops no problem. Hope you find your answer and feel better soon!

I have my endoscopy on Thursday, has anyone had the procedure done with a cough? I don't have a continuous cough, but every now and then throughout the day I have sort of coughing episodes. They are a lot better than they were but I called endoscopy and they said to speak to my gp and my gp got back to me and said I need to ask endoscopy if its ok if I have it done still.  Help!

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?

HI, my doctor suggested one week of consuming gluten before blood tests.  I have been gluten free for 3 years.  Has anyone been through this and will I get exact results after one week of consuming gluten?  I don't even know if I can do this, if I get sick I am not sure if I can continue, any suggestions??  Thanks in advance.
