And So The Saga Continues.....

Hi all...

I am new to the world of gluten intolerance, but not to the world of celiac....

Here is my story...

A number of years ago I went through a big bout of depression.. I was put on meds (of course) and non of them worked.. tried a psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellor, noting worked. finally switched to another Gp and she blood tested me. To her amazement my B levels were very low. She loaded me up with b12 intramuscularly and the depression went away.. imagine that.

I have been plagued with random bouts of the runs, muscle pain, headdaches, stomach aches, constipation, never ending cankers in my mouth, gastric reflux, and the list goes on... Oh and I am quite overweight..

I had a biopsy about ten years ago (it was negative) have had two blood tests, the most recent was about a year ago, all were negative. However... My dad has celiac disease. It is funny that I had all the symptoms first and they tested me but I was negative, eight years later, he gets tested and is positive.

So now I wondering if I am just really really gluten intollerant? I go to the clinic near my home to get a B12 shot every month and both of the doctors on call have told me to give up gluten. i know it seems like a no brainer, I was just wondering if anyone else has had an experience similar to mine but tested negative for celiac? I truly seem to have all the symptoms on the list, including little water blisters that come up on my fingers randomly??

thoughts, comments???

:) Robyn

Your story sounds familiar. I have had classic symptoms all my life (dx with IBS when I was 14) and when my son was dx with Celiac in March a light bulb went off and I thought that's what I had. I was CERTAIN I had Celiac. My bloodtest was negative. I decided to go gluten free anyway since my son is and what a difference! I feel like a different person. It has only been about a month but I feel so much better. All my symptoms are gone. I am self dx as gluten intolerant. The diet proved it for me. Good luck!

So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.

Has anyone experimenced enlarged lymph nodes with celiac? Both in the neck and groin area. Imaging of both areas have said that lymph nodes are reactive in nature. However, they have been present for months and just wondering how long this may take to go down. Been gluten-free for about two months. Blood counts are normal.

Hmm interesting I just assumed that any “IGA” tests including the DPG iga would be negative in a person who is IGA deficient but maybe that is not the case for the DPG test.

If you were just diagnosed I can say that if you go 100% gluten-free should should see dramatic improvement of your symptoms over the next few months, but the hard part is to stay gluten-free. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
