My 2 year old son has been gluten free since last week. He has not yet been tested. He frequently has six bowel movements a day containing undigested food and has had a slowed growth rate since he was four months old. If gluten is responsible, how long should it take before I see a change in his bowel habits(I haven't seen any difference yet)? He has also been off of dairy and soy since last week. Thanks so much for you replies!

Hi Lisa,
It could be quick or it could take a while too. You might want to try some pro-biotics for him also, as his gut flora is most likely off-balance. I had about a month and a half of healing symptoms myself, gut convulsions etc. But I was feelng better after the first week. If you are new to doing gluten free cooking, check out some of the threads and articles here on it. Hidden gluten is hard to avoid in most processed foods. Good for you getting him off soy.

I put my son on a Gluten-free Casein-free diet when he was a year old. It took 2 or 3 months before I saw a normal bowel movement, but the behavioral changes were wonderful and immediate. Good luck!
